The Abbotsford Canucks started their first tilt of their four-game road trip against the Manitoba Moose.

Nikita Tolopilo took the starting role in net, with Chris Driedger down at the other end of the ice.

After twelve minutes of scoreless play, Tristen Nielsen took matters into his own hands to get the action started. As Abbotsford started a rush down the ice, Arshdeep Bains made an excellent pass to Nielsen, who netted his eleventh goal of the season. Max Sasson registered a secondary assist.

Just 26 seconds later, Danila Klimovich tallied another. After breaking into the Manitoba zone, Ty Mueller passed the puck to Klimovich in front of the net, who made a move to backhand the puck passed Driedger, putting the Canucks up 2-0. About a minute and a half later, the Moose cut the lead in half with a goal from Axel Jonsson-Fjällby.

It did not take long for Abbotsford to strike back. After a great stop from Nikita Tolopilo, Abbotsford took possession of the puck and rushed down the ice. In a very similar fashion to his first goal, Nielsen one-timed the puck into the back of the net off a pass from Sasson only 31 seconds after Manitoba’s goal. With Bains getting the secondary assist, the trio all earned their second point of the night. 

The second period was quieter than the first, with neither team getting on the board. Sammy Blais had a great chance off the face-off, going hard to the net, but Driedger was there to stop it. The Canucks had a few more chances in the minutes to come, including a breakaway chance for Jujhar Khaira, but Driedger shut the door to keep the score 3-1. Abbotsford outshot their opponents by nearly double, with the shots registering 13-7 in the Canucks’ favour that period.

The third frame continued in similar fashion, with lots of back-and-forth play. As time wound down, Manitoba’s Isaak Phillips went on a partial breakaway down the ice, but Tolopilo was there to make the stop and keep the Moose trailing by two. Less than two minutes later though, Jonsson-Fjällby scored his second of the game to bring the Moose back within one.

With 2:42 remaining in the game, Reece Vitelli took a penalty to give Abbotsford the man-advantage. In the dying seconds of the power play, Sasson found Mueller in the slot, who made no mistake putting the puck in the net, giving Sasson his third assist of the night. As the clock ticked to zero, the Canucks held onto their two-goal lead to win it 4-2. 

After an exciting first period that saw three Canucks goals in two minutes and 23 seconds, Abbotsford picked up a 4-2 win in Manitoba to start the road trip.

The puck dropped on the final game of Abbotsford’s homestand as they faced the Calgary Wranglers for the 10th time this season.

Nikita Tolopilo returned to the crease for the Canucks, going head-to-head with Waltteri Ignatjew in Calgary’s net. 

Following a hard-fought shootout victory the night before, Abbotsford made a few tweaks to the lineup. The top three lines remained intact, with Arshdeep Bains, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson leading the charge. Jujhar Khaira stayed alongside Sammy Blais and Aatu Räty, while Ty Mueller continued centering Tristen Nielsen and Danila Klimovich. Phil Di Giuseppe returned to action, slotting in on the left wing with Chase Wouters and Nate Smith to round out the Canucks' forward group.

On the back end, Akito Hirose was paired with Cole McWard to start, while Christian Felton lined up with Christian Wolanin. Joe Arntsen also returned to the lineup, skating alongside Kirill Kudryavtsev.

The game opened with Calgary controlling early possession, registering a handful of shots before Abbotsford could respond. The Canucks found themselves shorthanded for four of the first 20 minutes, but Tolopilo stood tall, turning aside all 13 shots he faced. Ignatjew was equally solid in Calgary’s net, keeping the game scoreless heading into the second period.

Both teams came out looking to break the deadlock, and seven minutes in, Abbotsford got their first power play opportunity. With the faceoff already set in the offensive zone, it took just six seconds for Linus Karlsson to jam the puck through Ignatjew’s pads, giving the Canucks a 1-0 lead. The rest of the period saw Abbotsford spending more time shorthanded, including a 5-on-3 penalty kill, but Tolopilo and the defense held firm.

With twenty minutes left, Abbotsford aimed to extend their lead and secure the two points in regulation. Both teams exchanged chances, but the goaltenders continued to steal the show. As time wound down, Calgary pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, but the Canucks held strong. Tolopilo shut the door completely, earning a shutout and sealing a 1-0 victory.

With the win, Abbotsford swept the weekend series and extended their winning streak to five games. The team will now have a few days to recover before heading on the road to face the Manitoba Moose.

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their final homestand series with a St. Patrick’s Day showdown against the Calgary Wranglers.

Goaltender Ty Young earned back-to-back starts following his impressive 41-save performance in his last outing, facing off against Calgary’s Devin Cooley.

After a successful series against Bakersfield, Abbotsford stuck with an identical lineup. Arshdeep Bains, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson remained together as a trio, while Jujhar Khaira stayed on the right wing alongside Sammy Blais and Aatu Räty. Tristen Nielsen and Danila Klimovich bookended Ty Mueller, with Ty Glover, Chase Wouters, and Nate Smith rounding out the forward group.

The defensive pairings remained unchanged as well: Guillaume Brisebois with Cole McWard, Christian Wolanin alongside Jett Woo, and Akito Hirose paired with Kirill Kudryavtsev.

Heading into the matchup, the Wranglers sat in fourth place in the standings, with Abbotsford close behind in fifth, setting the stage for an intense battle.

The action started quickly, as Calgary struck just 1:07 into the game. Sam Morton fired the opening shot past Young, giving the Wranglers an early lead. Abbotsford looked to respond but found themselves on an early penalty kill, slowing their momentum. It wasn’t until the 15-minute mark that the Canucks got their second power play opportunity of the night. They registered a few shots before Max Sasson, from behind the net, found Arshdeep Bains in front. Bains buried the puck, tying the game at 1-1. Less than a minute later, Jujhar Khaira won a puck battle in the offensive zone, setting up Aatu Räty for a one-timer that found the back of the net, giving Abbotsford a 2-1 lead. However, the advantage was short-lived. Just a minute later, Rory Kerins lived up to his reputation and beat Young to knot the game at 2-2. With less than a minute remaining in the period, Clark Bishop put Calgary back on top, scoring to give the Wranglers a 3-2 lead heading into the second frame. The teams combined for five goals on just 12 shots in a fast-paced opening period.

Abbotsford had two power-play opportunities and a stretch of 4-on-4 play, generating quality chances, but Devin Cooley stood tall for the Wranglers. Energized by the equalizer, the Canucks pressed on. Minutes later, Max Sasson charged down the ice and dished a perfect pass back to Linus Karlsson, who was waiting in front to jam it home. Abbotsford had come from behind to take a 4-3 lead, shifting their focus to defense. As time dwindled, Calgary pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Abbotsford held strong, but in the dying seconds, Tyson Barrie fired a shot that found the back of the net with just six seconds remaining, forcing overtime with a 4-4 tie.

In overtime, the Canucks dominated possession and created several close chances, but a late penalty gave Calgary a power play for the remainder of the extra frame. The Wranglers nearly capitalized, but a close-range shot squeaked just wide, sending the game into a shootout.

With Blais securing the final goal, Abbotsford claimed a thrilling 5-4 shootout victory. They will face the Wranglers again tomorrow to close out their homestand before heading on the road to take on the Manitoba Moose.

ABBOTSFORD SECURES A 5-4 SHOOTOUT VICTORY OVER THE CALGARY WRANGLERS

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Jackson Kunz to a one-year AHL contract through the 2025-26 season. Kunz, 22, will also join Abbotsford for the remainder of the 2024-25 AHL season, competing on a professional try-out agreement.

The 6-3, 227-pound centre was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the fourth round (113th overall) of the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and recently completed his senior and final NCAA campaign with the University of North Dakota (NCHC).

A native of Grand Forks, ND, Kunz has spent the entirety of his collegiate career with his hometown school of North Dakota. He now completes his NCAA career having registered 45 points (24 goals, 21 assists) and 66 penalty minutes over 128 games played, and helped the program capture an NCHC regular season championship in 2023-24.

Before joining the Fighting Hawks, Kunz skated in 57 USHL regular season games with the Green Bay Gamblers, and attended Shattuck St. Mary’s prep school, competing for its U18 team from 2018-2020.

Abbotsford Canucks sign Jackson Kunz to a one year AHL Contract

The Abbotsford Canucks looked to secure the season series as they faced the Manitoba Moose for the final time this season.

Ty Young got the start in net for Abbotsford, going up against Domenic DiVincentis at the other end.

The Canucks wasted no time getting on the board. After a clean zone entry, Jett Woo fired a shot from the blue line, sending the puck deep into the offensive zone. Aatu Räty then fed a perfect pass in front to Sammy Blais, who roofed it into the back of the net, giving Abbotsford an early 1-0 lead. However, the advantage was short-lived—just a minute and a half later, Ben King capitalized on a rebound after Axel Jonsson-Fjällby’s initial shot rang off the post, tucking it home to even the score.

The pace slowed for a stretch, with Ty Young making some key saves to keep Abbotsford in it. But around the 12-minute mark, the Canucks found themselves shorthanded. The Moose made them pay, as Elias Salomonsson ripped a shot from the slot to put Manitoba ahead for the first time. As the period wound down, Cole McWard changed the game’s momentum, firing a shot from the slot that found the back of the net, tying things up at 2-2 just before intermission.

The second period saw a shift in momentum, but neither team could find the back of the net. Both had power play opportunities, but DiVincentis and Young stood tall, keeping the game locked at 2-2 heading into the final frame.

The pace picked up quickly in the third. Just 47 seconds in, Sammy Blais jumped off the bench, intercepted a turnover, and broke in alone, finishing his chance to put Abbotsford ahead. The action didn’t stop there—less than 45 seconds later, Chase Wouters sent a cross-ice feed to Guillaume Brisebois, who came streaking down the right side and fired a blocker-side shot to extend the Canucks' lead to 4-2.

But Manitoba didn't give up. Just over two minutes later, Simon Lundmark responded, beating Young to bring the Moose back within one. Then, an untimely Abbotsford penalty gave the Moose another chance, and they made it count—Mason Shaw ripped a seeing-eye shot from the blue line, finding the back of the net to tie the game at 4-4. In a span of less than five minutes, four goals had been exchanged, but defense tightened up for the remainder of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

Overtime was short-lived. Just 30 seconds in, Max Sasson turned on the jets, went end to end, and tucked the puck past DiVincentis to seal Abbotsford’s seventh straight win. The Canucks clinched the season series with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Manitoba.

Abbotsford will now return home for a few practice days before heading back out on the road to visit the San Jose Barracuda.

Abbotsford, B.C. (March 26, 2025): Abbotsford Canucks players decorated cookies with children and families in care at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice – Dave Lede House.  

The Abbotsford Canucks supported Milk & Cookies for Canuck Place, presented by BC Dairy, an annual fundraiser that includes selling Milk & Cookie Combos at Abbotsford Canucks home games. Funds raised support care provided by Canuck Place for over 920 children with life-threatening illnesses and families in BC and the Yukon.  

“We are so grateful to the Abbotsford Canucks players for bringing joy and comfort to the children and families at Canuck Place,” said Canuck Place CEO, Denise Praill. “The kitchen is the heart of our hospices. The cookie jar at Canuck Place is always full for children and families facing challenging uncertainty. We are so grateful to our partners at BC Dairy for supporting our Milk & Cookies campaign and ultimately pediatric palliative care across the province.  

Abbotsford Canucks players Chase Wouters, Nikita Tolopilo, and Cole McWard visited Canuck Place’s Abbotsford hospice and decorated cookies with children and families.   

"It was a great experience decorating cookies at Canuck Place with the kids, families, and my teammates,” said Abbotsford Canucks Captain, Chase Wouters. “You can really see how much moments like this mean to the patients, their parents, and even the siblings. These families are facing a lot of uncertainty and being able to support them during these challenging times is truly rewarding."

The funds raised for Milk & Cookies for Canuck Place will support the growing need for essential pediatric palliative care provided at Canuck Place. On average a child is on program for six years and their family remains in bereavement care for three years. Last year alone, Canuck Place had a 23% increase in family members receiving overnight care in hospices, and a 61% increase in children and families on program over the last decade. Through the generosity of the community, Canuck Place can continue to provide quality, interdisciplinary care to children with life-threatening illnesses and the families who love them. Until March 31, BC Dairy will match every dollar up to $30,000 for the Canuck Place Milk & Cookies campaign.
