The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their four-game homestand with a big win over the San Diego Gulls!

Aku Koskenvuo took the crease for the Canucks, facing Tomas Suchanek at the other end for the Gulls. Anri Ravinskis drew into the lineup for Cooper Walker, marking the only other change on the night.

The Canucks looked to get on the board early, and Ty Mueller made it happen. Just 1:57 into the opening frame, Mueller cashed in on a rebound from the slot to give Abbotsford an early 1-0 lead. Arshdeep Bains registered his 100th career AHL assist on the goal, becoming just the second player in franchise history to record all 100 as a Canuck.

The Gulls pushed back, but they weren’t able to solve Koskenvuo, and Abbotsford carried the lead into the second.

Abbotsford had a stellar middle frame, continuing to push the pace and generate chances. Just under halfway through the period, Danila Klimovich received a pass from Clayton in stride, entered the offensive zone, spun around a defender, and fired a no-look backhand into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

Koskenvuo stayed sharp at the other end, turning aside everything that came his way, and the Canucks extended their lead late in the period when Victor Mancini ripped a shot from the blue line through traffic to make it 3-0 heading into the third.

Abbotsford stayed hot in the final frame, keeping the Gulls out of the zone, blocking shots, and continuing to lean on Koskenvuo’s steady play. Ty Mueller added his second of the night, once again taking a backhand to the net to make it 4-0.

With time winding down, the Canucks locked it down defensively and kept the pressure on until the final horn. As the buzzer sounded, Aku Koskenvuo secured his first career AHL shutout with 33 saves, leading Abbotsford to a 4-0 win and a weekend sweep over the Gulls.

THE CANUCKS SHUTOUT THE GULLS 4-0

The Abbotsford Canucks hosted the San Diego Gulls for the first time this season at Rogers Forum, after already playing four games down in California.

Jiří Patera rejoined the squad on home ice and drew right back into the lineup, taking on Calle Clang once again. The Canucks ran with an identical forward group, while Sawyer Mynio returned to the d-core alongside Joe Arntsen to mark the only lineup change.

Abbotsford has had a challenging run against San Diego this season, and they looked to take control early and change the fate of the series. The Canucks generated a ton of chances in the opening frame but couldn’t finish any of their plays. The teams also exchanged power-play opportunities, but both goalies stayed sharp. Jonathan Lekkerimäki picked up right where he left off — walking into the zone all alone, he found his spot and ripped a laser from the left circle to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead, the lone goal of the first.

It truly remained a goalie’s game. The Gulls had a wide-open chance, but Patera reached across and got his stick on it, making a massive save to keep Abbotsford in front. However, one was bound to squeak through, this time in favour of San Diego. Yegor Sidorov got Patera down and out of position before collecting his own rebound and going top shelf to tie the game 1-1. It was another one-goal period, setting the stage for the third to be the difference-maker.

The Canucks continued to push, and the work paid off early in the final frame. After a net-front battle, Chase Wouters found Vilmer Alriksson, who no-look backhanded the puck past Clang to restore Abbotsford’s lead. With time winding down, the Gulls pulled their netminder for an extra attacker, but Arshdeep Bains gained possession and buried the empty-netter to seal a 3-1 win over San Diego.

The teams will meet again tomorrow night before Abbotsford heads back on the road.

After celebrating their Calder Cup victory last June with a ceremony at the former Abbotsford Centre (now Rogers Forum), and raising the banner in October at their home opener, the 2024-25 Calder Cup-winning team capped it off with a ring ceremony at Rogers Arena. 

It was a moment that reflected a title won and a standard of development and culture within the Canucks organization. 

The ring ceremony was held at the WELL Health Presidents Club alongside ownership, hockey operations staff, business operations, the players, and their spouses and partners. The evening was about recognizing the work behind the scenes and the organizational commitment that helped turn potential into champions. 

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager Ryan Johnson called it a special night, one that brought him back to the mindset his group carried throughout last season that helped earn them the Cup – battling for one another and deciding failure was not an option.  

“That got me, I really had to keep my composure there, because it just brings the grind and the process of the five rounds, the 24 games. The tension was so high all the time. To watch it back, especially one of my fondest memories is the last six seconds of that face off and the silence of the crowd in Charlotte and the roar of our players, it's still something I think about daily," Johnson said. 

As Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra watched the playoff montage, he couldn’t help but have a huge grin on his face remembering all the moments they had, seeing how much the players have changed and grown since their Cup run. 

The ceremony and ring presentation were things he will remember forever. 

“It’s a very beautiful ring they designed for us, but it’s great to have the guys back together and the memories that come back,” Malhotra said. “When you start to think of the run that we went on and the journey that we had, it was such a special time for us, so to have the icing on the cake now is nice to have.” 

Malhotra added that the ceremony brought back the emotions of last season, and it’s special to know that they’ll forever have the bond of being champions. 

“As you go through the season, it's not just about the hockey, and the x's and o's and the practices and the games. It's the amount of time we spend together off the ice and in the office, going for dinners, and traveling,” Malhotra said. 

“My biggest takeaway from last year, is just the memories, the emotions and the relationships that were made were the greatest part of the season for me.”

Captain Chase Wouters gave credit to everyone on the ice and behind the scenes last season to make the championship possible.  

He talked about winning the Western Conference Finals at home against the Texas Stars, and the do-or-die games where they pulled out the win were just a couple of moments he’ll remember about his Calder Cup-winning team. 

"They mean everything,” Wouters said. “I’m just so proud of everyone in that room. There's so many highs and lows throughout the year and we just talked about how we always had fun at the rink. We always enjoyed being together, and that's kind of what kept us going through those low times. Those guys mean everything to me in there, and it's quite the special run we went on there.” 

As for the ring, there’s no such thing as too much bling. 

“They're beautiful,” Wouters said. “They're shining, that's for sure.”

Designed in part by the Canucks’ Creative team, the rings feature Johnny Canuck on top of a diamond-encrusted surface encircled by the words “Calder Cup Champions”. There are 16 blue stones around the side of the ring, symbolizing their 16 wins to the Cup. 

One side displays the Calder Cup over a goal net textured background, while the other side features the player’s name, number, and season year over a next textured background. 

Inside, the Johnny Canuck logo and the series results are engraved to honour the team’s championship journey, while the bottom of the ring is individually custom etched with Abbotsford’s mantra: “One Pack, One Purpose”. 

The rings will sparkle under arena lights and in trophy cases for years to come, but their true value lies in what they represent.

Abbotsford Canucks Calder Cup Legacy Sealed with a Ring 

The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their road trip with one final matchup against the Bakersfield Condors.

Jiří Patera returned to the crease for Abbotsford, taking on Connor Ungar at the other end. The Canucks opted for an 11-and-7 lineup, with Vilmer Alriksson out and Christian Felton drawing in on the blue line.

Bakersfield came out strong in the opening minutes, and it paid off early. Just four-and-a-half minutes in, James Hamblin ripped a shot from the left circle that found the twine, giving the Condors a 1–0 lead. Despite the early setback, Abbotsford pushed back hard, firing 20 shots in the opening frame. The Canucks earned the lone power play of the period, but Ungar stood tall to preserve Bakersfield’s lead heading into the intermission.

Abbotsford cranked up the pressure in the middle frame, limiting the Condors to just six shots. Patera was sharp when called upon, while the Canucks threw everything they had at Ungar. Another power-play opportunity went unanswered, but after 34 straight shot attempts, the pressure finally broke through. Lukas Reichel tipped Jimmy Schuldt’s point shot past Ungar to knot the game at 1–1. Abbotsford finished the period with 23 shots on goal, but only one found its way through, sending the game tied into the final 20.

Ungar continued to be a brick wall in the third, denying multiple point-blank chances. Despite being outshot, the Condors capitalized on turnovers to swing the momentum. At the 10:30 mark, Viljami Marjala intercepted a pass and restored the Bakersfield lead. Less than a minute later, Roby Järventie beat Patera five-hole to give the Condors a two-goal cushion.

The Canucks didn’t go quietly. With just over four minutes remaining, Reichel struck again, sneaking a shot past Ungar to pull Abbotsford within one. A late power play gave the Canucks a 6-on-4 advantage after Patera was pulled, but Ungar shut the door once more as time expired.

Abbotsford fell 3–2 to Bakersfield to close out a busy January and will return home for two more games ahead of the All-Star break.

THE CANUCKS FELL 3-2 TO THE CONDORS IN HARD FOUGHT BATTLE

The Abbotsford Canucks visited the Bakersfield Condors in their home barn for the first time this season.

Aku Koskenvuo got the start between the pipes for Abbotsford, taking on Matt Tomkins at the other end for the Condors. Anri Ravinskis and Ben Berard traded spots in the lineup, as did Nick Poisson and Cooper Walker to round out the forward changes. Jett Woo also returned to the lineup, pairing up with Jimmy Schuldt on the blueline.

The Condors wasted no time getting on the board. Quinn Hutson fired the initial shot on Koskenvuo, but the rebound kicked back into the slot where James Hamblin was waiting to cash in, making it 1–0 just 55 seconds into the game. The Canucks were able to generate a few looks, but Bakersfield controlled much of the opening period. Around the nine-minute mark, Viljami Marjala rang a shot in off the post to double the lead. Five minutes later, during a stretch of 4-on-4 play, the Condors added two more goals with Damien Carfagna and Seth Griffith finding the scoresheet. Jiří Patera entered the crease for Abbotsford following the goals. Bakersfield capped off the period when Max Jones snapped one home late, sending the teams into the intermission with the Condors up 5–0.

The Canucks looked to respond in the second, firing plenty of shots on net, but Tomkins stood tall for Bakersfield. Tensions rose as the period went on and penalty minutes piled up, eventually resulting in game misconducts for both Jett Woo and Quinn Hutson.

Roby Järventie extended the Condors’ lead early in the third, beating Patera to make it 6–0 before Abbotsford was finally able to get on the board. With an early power play, Jimmy Schuldt one-timed the puck from the top of the left circle to make it 6–1. Just two minutes later, on another man advantage, Arshdeep Bains ripped a shot from the circle to cut the deficit to four. The Condors answered back once more on the power play, as Sam Poulin buried a rebound to restore the five-goal cushion at 7–2.

Bakersfield dominated and picked up a decisive 7–2 win over Abbotsford, but the two teams will be right back at it tomorrow night for a rematch.

THE CANUCKS FELL 7-2 TO THE BAKERSFIELD CONDORS ON THE ROAD

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their three-game road trip with their first visit to Ontario, California this season, taking on the Ontario Reign. The two teams hadn’t met since Abbotsford’s Home Opener weekend and both lineups have seen plenty of change since then.

Jiří Patera returned to the crease following his near-perfect performance on Saturday, facing Eric Portillo at the other end. Nick Poisson and Cooper Walker rejoined the lineup, winging Chase Wouters to round out the night’s changes.

The Reign struck first, getting on the board just three-and-a-half minutes in when Andre Lee deflected a Martin Chromiak shot past Patera to make it 1–0. Abbotsford responded with strong pressure and continued to outshoot Ontario. Arshdeep Bains earned a quality chance that resulted in a Reign hooking penalty, but the Canucks were unable to convert on the power play. With the period winding down, Abbotsford’s persistence paid off as Lukas Reichel capitalized on a Reign misplay, breaking in alone and snapping a shot from the slot with 57 seconds remaining to tie the game heading into the second.

The second period swung heavily in favour of the home side. Just two minutes in, Jarred Wright finished off a two-on-one to restore the Reign lead. Penalty trouble midway through the frame proved costly, as Glen Gawdin buried a one-timer from the slot on the power play to make it 3–1. Four minutes later, Aatu Jämsen danced through the defence and tucked in a backhander, giving Ontario a 4–1 lead entering the third.

Ontario kept the pressure on early in the final frame. Two minutes in, Wright sent a cross-ice feed to Francesco Pinelli, who finished off the play to extend the lead to 5–1. Vilmer Alriksson was able to chip away at the deficit, converting on a rebound to make it 5–2, but the Canucks couldn’t find another breakthrough. Despite outshooting the Reign, Abbotsford fell 5–2 to open the road trip.
