The Abbotsford Canucks opened their final weekend of the season with a matchup against the Ontario Reign.
Rolling with an 11-and-7 formation, Jiří Patera got the start in net, facing off against Erik Portillo at the other end. Jack Thompson returned to the blue line, while Austin Brimmer lined up alongside Cooper Walker.

The Canucks came out flying. Ben Berard opened the scoring early, sniping one through traffic from the right circle to give the visitors a 1–0 lead. Patera was sharp in the first period, turning aside breakaway chances and flashing the pads on dangerous rebounds. Just past the midway mark, Bennett Schimek doubled the lead, getting his stick on a Ty Mueller shot to make it 2–0 heading into the second.

The Canucks battled through a handful of penalties in the middle frame, but the defensive group stood tall—blocking shots, disrupting plays, and even generating some offensive pressure. Both goaltenders were stellar, with Patera and Portillo making highlight-reel saves to keep the game tight. Abbotsford carried their 2–0 lead into the third.

The final frame featured plenty of back-and-forth action, though shots were limited. The Reign pushed late, creating a number of dangerous chances, but Patera remained a brick wall. Ontario pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, but it proved too little, too late. In the dying seconds, Patera sealed the shutout with a game-saving pad stop, backstopping the Canucks to a 2–0 victory.

Abbotsford now heads to Coachella Valley for their final game of the season.

Abbotsford, BC – The Abbotsford Canucks are proud to announce that Chase Wouters has been named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Abbotsford community during the 2025.26 season. 

In his fifth season with the Canucks and fourth as captain, Wouters has established himself as a pillar in the community, consistently demonstrating leadership while supporting local charitable initiatives across Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley. 

Throughout the 2025.26 season, Wouters has made a meaningful impact in the Abbotsford community, connecting with and uplifting others through a wide range of initiatives. From touring the Calder Cup to local organizations following the team’s championship and visiting minor hockey practices as a guest coach, to facilitating locker room tours for children facing life-threatening illnesses, Wouters has shown a strong commitment to giving back. 

Wouters also played a key role in organizing the team’s support of families during the holiday season, including personally sponsoring a family and decorating cookies with children at Canuck Place. He further engaged with a wide range of community groups throughout the season, including joining a Special Olympics Abbotsford floorball practice, visiting the MSA Society for Community Living, and speaking with the Abbotsford Police Department Youth Leadership Program about what it means to be a leader. 

Whether through in-person visits, community events, or thoughtful gestures, Wouters has consistently demonstrated leadership, compassion, and a genuine dedication to making a difference off the ice. 

The Abbotsford Canucks are proud to celebrate Wouters’ contributions and his unwavering commitment to making a positive impact in the community. 

Wouters is now one of 32 finalists for the AHL’s 2025.26 Yanick Dupré Memorial Award, honouring the overall IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupré Memorial Award will be announced by the American Hockey League at a later date.

The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their season series against the Calgary Wranglers with another big win this weekend.

Ty Young got the nod in net for the second straight game, facing Connor Murphy at the other end. Braden Birnie and Christian Felton slotted into the forward group, while Joe Arntsen lined up alongside Nikolai Knyzhov following Kirill Kudryavtsev’s recall to round out the lineup changes.

The Abbotsford Canucks came out flying, with Riley Patterson leading the charge in the opening frame. Less than four minutes in, Patterson fired a slapshot from the slot off a feed from Arshdeep Bains, finding the back of the net for his first career AHL goal to make it 1-0 early. With the assist, Bains tied Christian Wolanin for the most assists in franchise history with 109.

The two continued to click just minutes later. Bains buried a rebound from Bennett Schimek to double the lead, while Patterson picked up the secondary assist to cap off a strong start. The Canucks controlled the period, limiting the Wranglers to just four shots and carrying a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The pace slowed in the second period, but Calgary began to push back. Both Young and Murphy were forced into key saves, while the defensive units held strong as neither team found the back of the net in the middle frame.

In the third, the Canucks looked to put things away. Dino Kambeitz extended the lead early, weaving through traffic before going bar down to make it 3-0 Abbotsford.

The Canucks faced their toughest test late in the game, tasked with killing off a four-minute double minor— their first penalty kill of the night. They stood tall, keeping the Wranglers off the board.

With time winding down, Calgary pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, but Bennett Schimek sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

Ty Young stopped all 24 shots he faced, earning the shutout and leading the Canucks to a 4-0 victory to complete the weekend sweep over the Calgary Wranglers.

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager Richard Seeley has seen the AHL evolve over the past decade and is excited to get to work with the organization that he grew up cheering for.  

Seeley has spent the past eight seasons as the General Manager of the Los Angeles Kings’ minor league team, the Ontario Reign. He has seen how impactful a good AHL environment can be on player development, but knows that the AHL is a developmental league for more than just the players.  

He wants coaches, trainers, medical staff, and all others to do whatever they can to make it to the NHL, and surrounding the players with a great support system helps create a winning environment in the AHL.  

Step one for Seeley in his role with the Canucks is to take an assessment of the entire Abbotsford Canucks organization. He knows that Ryan Johnson has done a great job down Highway One, and the 2025 Calder Cup Champion banner is proof of that.  

“The NHL is not so much a development league compared to the AHL. So, that's where we want to make sure we prepare the guys, give them the best opportunity to put on a Vancouver Canucks jersey, and make the transition as smooth as possible. That means alignment of both the AHL and NHL clubs on how they operate and lay the foundation for development and growth,” said Seeley.  

Development in the AHL has grown significantly over the past 10 years, as shown by statistics from the 2023-24 season, in which 87% of NHL players played in the AHL.  

When asked how to achieve the best results in development at the AHL level, Seeley cited communication. He believes the vacant AHL Head Coach position requires a good communicator who can build strong relationships with players and staff.  

“You are not going to maximize a player’s potential without forming a productive relationship. It’s not a thing where the coach says, ‘jump’ and the player says, ‘how high’ anymore,” said Seeley.  

When asked about the most fun part of his eight seasons as the General Manager of the Reign, Seeley cited the growth that you see from staff members and the young players, specifically the rookies.  

Seeley elaborated, "Seeing a player who had developed in the AHL take their rookie lap or score their first NHL goal is one of the most rewarding experiences when I think about it. Alex Turcotte, for example, got a huge hug from his Reign teammate Jordan Spence. Taylor Ward and Angus Booth were a couple of guys who scored in their NHL debuts. The different paths the players take to get to the NHL, and having an understanding of what work took place behind the scenes for them to get there, knowing the AHL staff played a small role in those guys realizing their dream, puts a smile on my face."   

During his time with the Reign, the Los Angeles Kings were drafting quite high in the NHL draft. Seeley has plenty of experience developing highly touted prospects and believes that building a solid foundation helps young players figure out how to succeed in the professional ranks.  

“We have to build that foundation and try to establish habits that are going to help them be successful at the next level,” said Seeley.  

“They don't know what to expect. It’s such an important time to teach and coach these young players. We must focus on building those foundational habits for them to be successful but also giving them confidence along the way.”  

When the Sedins and Johnson were announced as Co-Presidents and General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks, it immediately piqued Seeley’s attention.  

“When you listen to RJ, Daniel, and Henrik's press conferences, you just listen to the way they speak, and it draws you in. There's not a lot of ‘I’s’ coming out, it's all ‘we', and I really pick up on that stuff, and that's exciting to me,” said Seeley.  

Seeley has already been busy making signings and talking to the Sedins and Johnson to gather as much information as possible about the players and staff in Abbotsford. He is ecstatic to be back in his home province and eager to help contribute to the Canucks’ road to building something special for the fans.

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager Ryan Johnson announced today that the club has signed forward Ben Berard to a one-year contract extension through the 2026-27 AHL season.

Berard, 27, led Abbotsford players in goals (20) and ranked second on the team in points (37) while establishing AHL career highs in all major statistical categories over 63 games played for the Canucks in 2025-26. He also led the American Hockey League with five shootout goals (six attempts) in 2025-26 and was Abbotsford’s lone representative at the 2026 AHL All-Star Classic.

The 6-0, 200-pound winger made Abbotsford’s 2025-26 season-opening roster after spending the majority of 2024-25 with the Canucks’ ECHL affiliate Kalamazoo Wings where he ranked tied for the team lead in goals (20). Berard recorded his first AHL multi-point game (one goal, one assist) during the Canucks 2025-26 Home Opener against Ontario on Oct. 24. He would go on to register seven multi-point games during this past season, including a career-high three-point night (one goal, two assists) against Henderson on Nov. 2 and the first multi-goal performance (two goals) of his AHL career at Coachella Valley on Dec. 27.

The Duncan, British Columbia native was originally acquired by the Canucks as a free agent when he signed a one-year AHL contract on July 31, 2024. Berard has now amassed 44 points (23 goals, 21 assists) and 25 penalty minutes over 99 career AHL games played, and has also skated in seven Calder Cup Playoff games since turning pro in 2023.

CANUCKS EXTEND BERARD TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACT

The 2025/26 Abbotsford Canucks wrapped up their regular season with a strong final win over the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

After finding success in their previous matchup against the Ontario Reign, Abbotsford rolled out an identical lineup, with the lone change coming in net as Ty Young got the start opposite Victor Östman.

The Canucks looked to strike early but ran into penalty trouble, finding themselves shorthanded twice in the opening half of the first period. After returning to even strength, Abbotsford began to build momentum. Around the 12-minute mark, Kirill Kudryavtsev and Danila Klimovich connected on a quick passing play, with Klimovich finishing off a one-timer to open the scoring. The goal marked his 70th, tying Linus Karlsson for the most in franchise history. Ty Young came up with several key saves to preserve the 1-0 lead heading into the second.

Coachella Valley responded quickly in the middle frame. Just 1:45 in, Eduard Sale fired a shot from the blue line through traffic to even the score. Abbotsford answered with sustained pressure in the offensive zone, and midway through the period, Jimmy Schuldt worked the puck toward the net. Dino Kambeitz got a shot off, and Chase Wouters capitalized on the rebound, tucking it home to restore the lead.

The Canucks kept pushing and were rewarded again late in the period. Ben Berard jumped off the bench, took a neutral-zone pass from Cole Clayton, and made a slick move before roofing a shot to extend the lead to 3-1 heading into the third.

Abbotsford added to their lead early in the final frame, as Joe Arntsen blasted a shot from the left circle past Östman to make it 4-1. The Firebirds responded soon after, with Charlie Wright scoring from the blue line to cut the deficit to two.

Despite the late push from Coachella Valley—including a goalie pull in the final minutes—Ty Young stood tall, making several clutch saves to secure the win. The Canucks closed out their regular season on a high note with a 4-2 victory.
