The second half of the 2025–26 season kicked off tonight as the Abbotsford Canucks hosted the Ontario Reign for the first time since their home opener. Decked out in their home greens, the Canucks delivered a dominant effort and earned their first win against Ontario this season.

There were some notable lineup changes for Abbotsford. Chase Stillman dressed for the first time since October after recovering from injury. Nils Åman returned to the forward group, while Sawyer Mynio slotted back in on the blue line. Nikita Tolopilo got the start between the pipes, taking on Eric Portillo at the other end.

Tolopilo was sharp from the opening puck drop, turning aside a flurry of Reign shots in the first 20 minutes. Abbotsford took the only penalty of the frame but successfully killed it off. Despite the Reign’s shot advantage, the game remained scoreless after one.

The Canucks needed to generate more offense if they wanted to shift momentum. However, penalty trouble in the second period made that difficult. After Tolopilo continued to stand tall, Ontario broke through on the power play. A shot from Martin Chromiak slipped through Tolopilo’s legs and sat loose in the crease before Cole Guttman jammed it home to give the Reign a 1–0 lead. Abbotsford received its first power play later in the period but struggled to create quality chances and headed into the third trailing by one.

The response in the final frame was immediate. Just under two minutes in, Nils Åman led a rush up ice, followed up on his own rebound, wrapped around the net, and banked the puck in off the goaltender to tie the game 1–1. The equalizer energized the home side, and ten minutes later they struck again. Nikolai Knyzhov fired a shot from the blue line, and Nick Poisson was positioned perfectly to tip it home, giving Abbotsford its first lead of the night.

With time winding down, the Reign pushed hard to even the score and pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker. In the dying seconds, Arshdeep Bains came up with a massive block to seal the victory.

Abbotsford skated away with a 2–1 come-from-behind win, securing their first victory of the second half and their first triumph over Ontario this season.

Coming into this season Abbotsford Canucks’ forward Ben Berard wouldn’t have guessed he’d be heading to the 2026 AHL All-Star Classic. 

He played four games with Abbotsford last year, spending most of the season in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings. Last season, he had two goals in four games with Abbotsford and 40 points (20-20-40) in the ECHL with the Kalamazoo Wings, continuing to chip away at the details of his game. 

“I came into camp just wanting to get a spot on this team here to start the year. That was the first goal, and achieving that was nice, and now, throughout the year, growing my role and being able to contribute to this team, it's been a lot of fun,” Berard said. 

The 26-year-old winger leads Abbotsford with 23 points (9-14-23) on the season through 43 games. He’s been slotted in lines throughout the season and plays with pace and bite to his game. 

Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra announced Berard’s All-Star selection on Thursday, mentioning how the forward is a “jack-of-all trades” and has made the most of opportunities presented to him. 

“He comes to the rink every day; he grinds, he performs, he contributes. We recognize him, we appreciate him, and the league has also recognized Benny Berard is going to be our All-Star selection in Rockford,” Malhotra said.

Abbotsford Canucks’ Assistant Coach Harry Mahesh is excited to see Berard get the nod for AHL All-Star and is well-deserved for the contributions Berard has made so far this year. 

“To see the progression of a guy who played a handful of games with Abbotsford last season to guy who's leading our team and scoring and is somewhat local and gets to represent a team he grew up watching with the Canucks is really cool,” Mahesh said. “For him, with the ups and downs of the season, he's been really consistent in his production, so it's a good reward for everything he's done for us.” 

Mahesh has a lot of respect for Berard’s work ethic and perseverance, working on his game and taking every opportunity to improve. 

From the ECHL to AHL All-Star Shine, Ben Berard Represents Hometown Team 

The Abbotsford Canucks had one final chance to split their back-to-back with the San Jose Barracuda, hosting them at home this afternoon before the break.

Nikita Tolopilo took the reins in net once again, squaring off against Laurent Brossoit at the other end. Abbotsford rolled out an identical lineup to last night, looking to earn the split.

The game picked up right where it left off. Less than two minutes in, Joe Arntsen dropped the gloves with Brandon Hache, setting the tone for another physical matchup. Tolopilo came up with a pair of big saves early, robbing the Barracuda on a rebound chance, before Jett Woo got into a tilt with Shane Bowers just a few minutes later. Both teams traded power-play opportunities, but it was Danila Klimovich who opened the scoring, firing a shot that hit the post and deflected into the net to give the Canucks a 1–0 lead at the end of the first.

The second period stayed heated. Jett Woo headed to the box, and Dino Kambeitz got into some rough stuff with Egor Afanasyev, carrying over tensions from the night before and sending the teams to four-on-four. With the extra space on the ice, Ty Mueller capitalized, tipping in a point shot from Nikolai Kynzhov to make it 2–0 Canucks. Tolopilo continued to shine, stopping all 22 shots he faced through the first 40 minutes.

Things boiled over again in the third. Barracuda forward Anthony Vincent was assessed a game misconduct for cross-checking Jett Woo, giving Abbotsford a five-minute power play. With five minutes remaining, Patrick Giles took a penalty, handing the Canucks a 5-on-3 for two minutes. Abbotsford applied plenty of pressure, but Brossoit stood tall to keep San Jose within reach.

Once back at even strength, the Barracuda finally broke through, with Igor Chernyshov sneaking one past Tolopilo to pull them within one. The Canucks dug in defensively down the stretch, and Tolopilo made several key saves. With under a minute to go, San Jose pulled their netminder, but Abbotsford’s defence held firm, securing a 2–1 win to split the series.

The Abbotsford Canucks got back to work in Henderson tonight, looking to split the series with the Henderson Silver Knights.

Ty Young swapped into the crease tonight, taking on the same netminder, Carl Lindbom, for the Silver Knights. The Canucks also switched up their line combinations in search of different results from the previous night. The most notable change saw Nick Poisson draw in for Cooper Walker, while Joe Arntsen stepped onto the blue line in place of Sawyer Mynio.

The Canucks controlled much of the opening few minutes, but it was ultimately the Silver Knights who struck first. Trevor Connelly stayed hot, registering his fourth goal of the weekend to open the scoring for the home team nine minutes in.

Abbotsford battled back and outshot the Silver Knights but didn’t find success until late in the frame while the teams were skating four-on-four. Nikolai Knyzhov fired a shot on net that left a rebound in front, allowing Ty Mueller to jam the puck home over the shoulder of Lindbom to tie the game heading into the second period.

The Canucks looked to pull ahead in the second, but the Silver Knights applied pressure early. Abbotsford eventually earned a power play around the seven-minute mark, and Victor Mancini took a shot from the blue line that weaved through traffic and found the back of the net to give the Canucks the lead. Young came up with several key saves late in the period, sending Abbotsford into the final frame up 2–1.

The third period was packed with action. The Silver Knights tied the game early with a power-play goal from Matyas Sapovaliv. The tie didn’t last long, as Jett Woo fired a shot from the goal line just two minutes later to restore the Canucks’ lead.

However, an untimely penalty to Arntsen proved costly. Sapovaliv capitalized again on the power play, netting his second goal of the period to tie the game at three.

With time ticking down, both teams pushed for the go-ahead goal to avoid overtime. With just seven seconds remaining, Jackson Hallum slipped a shot past Young to give Henderson the late lead, and the Silver Knights skated away with a 4–3 win.

The Abbotsford Canucks made the trip back down to Henderson for the first time since their season opener, facing the Henderson Silver Knights.

The Canucks had some reinforcements as their Olympians returned to the team. Lukas Reichel slotted in next to Nils Åman and Danila Klimovich, while Anri Ravinskis lined up with Jujhar Khaira and Chase Stillman. Nikita Tolopilo started in goal once again, this time taking on Carl Lindbom for Henderson.

The game opened at a quick pace, with few whistles and plenty of back-and-forth play. The Silver Knights had the early edge, outshooting the Canucks to start the game and earning the first power play. However, Abbotsford struck first while shorthanded. Nils Åman capitalized on a missed pass behind Henderson’s net and found Arshdeep Bains in the slot, where he one-timed the puck into the net. The goal not only gave the Canucks the early lead but also launched Arshdeep Bains into the all-time points leader position for the Abbotsford Canucks.

Henderson responded four minutes later when Trevor Connelly buried a rebound past Tolopilo to tie the game 1–1. Abbotsford answered almost immediately, as Danila Klimovich deflected Sawyer Mynio’s tight-angle shot into the back of the net just 34 seconds later. The Canucks carried that 2–1 lead into the second period.

The middle frame swung completely in favour of the home team. Henderson equalized when Trevor Connelly picked up his second of the game, blasting a shot from the blue line past Tolopilo. Two minutes later, Tanner Laczynski scored the go-ahead goal for the Silver Knights. Connelly would complete the hat trick before the period ended, sending Henderson into the intermission with a 4–2 lead. The Canucks had a late power play but were unable to close the gap before the end of the period.

Henderson extended the lead early in the third when Mitch McClain fired a shot over Tolopilo’s shoulder to make it 5–2. The Canucks had a golden opportunity midway through the period, earning a five-on-three power play followed by another two-minute advantage when the first penalty expired. Despite the extended time with the extra man, Abbotsford couldn’t break through Henderson’s defence. Mathieu Cataford added another for the Silver Knights later in the period, making it 6–2.

Abbotsford pushed late, with Arshdeep Bains scoring his second of the night with less than two minutes remaining, but the deficit proved too large to overcome.

The Abbotsford Canucks ultimately fell 6–3 to the Henderson Silver Knights, but the two teams will meet again tomorrow night at 6 PM.

Abbotsford Canucks

The Abbotsford Canucks hosted their annual Family Day game in front of a packed crowd, completing the weekend sweep of the Ontario Reign in their final home game of the month with a 5–3 victory.

Nikita Tolopilo earned his fourth consecutive start between the pipes for the men in green, going head-to-head with Phoenix Copley at the other end. Abbotsford rolled out a full 12-and-6 lineup once again, with Jujhar Khaira slotting in alongside Nick Poisson and Cooper Walker to mark the only change of the afternoon.

The Canucks came out flying, generating multiple quality chances early, but the scoreboard didn’t reflect their dominance. A miscue behind the net left Tolopilo out of position, and Aatu Jämsen capitalized with Ontario’s first shot of the night to open the scoring. Despite controlling much of the play, Abbotsford couldn’t solve Copley in the first period.

The second frame couldn’t have started better for the home side. Just 38 seconds in, Jonathan Lekkerimäki wired one of his signature shots from the right circle, going bar down to tie the game at one. Two minutes later, Nils Åman sent a perfect cross-ice feed to Ben Berard, who buried it into a wide-open right side to give Abbotsford a 2–1 lead.

Ontario struggled to generate sustained pressure, but a late power play shifted momentum. Glenn Gawdin benefited from an unfortunate bounce that sailed over Tolopilo’s head, tying the game at two heading into the third.

The Reign grabbed early momentum in the final frame when Jämsen struck again, sneaking a sharp-angle shot in from the goal line less than four minutes in to give Ontario a 3–2 lead. Abbotsford answered quickly. Six minutes later, Khaira pounced on a loose rebound and buried it to even the score at three apiece.

The Canucks refused to back down. With just under six minutes remaining, Ty Mueller fed Lekkerimäki, who sniped another beauty over Copley’s right shoulder to restore the Abbotsford lead. Shortly after, Mueller circled the net himself and tucked one home with the netminder out of position, extending the lead to 5–3.

Ontario pulled Copley for the extra attacker in the final minutes but couldn’t solve Tolopilo again. The Canucks sealed the 5–3 win, completing the weekend sweep in front of their home crowd.

The two teams won’t have to wait long for a rematch, as the battle shifts to California in just two days’ time.
