The Abbotsford Canucks played host to the Coachella Valley Firebirds for the first of their final two home games of the season, kicking off Fan Appreciation Weekend.

Jiří Patera made his third consecutive start in net, coming off a weekend sweep over the San Diego Gulls. He faced Nikke Kokko at the other end. Christian Felton rejoined the forward group, while Braden Birnie made his AHL debut. Guillaume Brisebois also drew back into the lineup, with Nikolai Knyzhov coming out to round out the defensive core.

The opening period featured fast-paced, back-and-forth action, with both teams generating quality chances and capitalizing on man advantages. However, both goaltenders stood tall, and the game remained scoreless heading into the second.

The Canucks continued to generate strong offensive looks, but it was the Firebirds who struck first. On a shorthanded opportunity, John Hayden buried a rebound to give Coachella Valley a 1–0 lead early in the second. Despite continued pressure and chances, Abbotsford was unable to solve Kokko through the middle frame.

Looking to respond in the third, the Canucks kept pushing, but posts and unlucky bounces continued to get in the way. Coachella Valley extended their lead to 2–0 late in the period, courtesy of Cooper Marody. Abbotsford pulled the goaltender in search of an extra attacker, but time ran out before they could find the back of the net, ultimately falling 2–0 to the Firebirds.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow as the Canucks close out their 2025–26 home schedule before finishing the season on the road.

Canucks fall 2-0 to the Firebirds

**Abbotsford, BC** – The Abbotsford Canucks are proud to dedicate their final two home games of the regular season to their fans as they take on the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Friday, April 3rd and Saturday, April 4th, presented by Traveland RV.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS TO HOST FAN APPRECIATION WEEKEND ON APRIL 3RD AND 4TH

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Braden Birnie to a professional try-out agreement.

Birnie, 24, recently made his professional hockey debut with the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush on March 12 and has since recorded six points (two goals, four assists) in his first nine pro games played. Prior to joining Rapid City, the 6’2, 192-pound winger completed his fourth and final collegiate season in 2025-26 with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (NCAA-Independent), recording career highs in goals (seven), points (18) and penalty minutes (22).

The Weyburn, Saskatchewan native totaled 47 points (16 goals, 31 assists) and 74 penalty minutes over 114 NCAA games played with Alaska-Fairbanks between 2022 to 2026.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS SIGN BIRNIE TO PTO

The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their season series against the Calgary Wranglers with another big win this weekend.

Ty Young got the nod in net for the second straight game, facing Connor Murphy at the other end. Braden Birnie and Christian Felton slotted into the forward group, while Joe Arntsen lined up alongside Nikolai Knyzhov following Kirill Kudryavtsev’s recall to round out the lineup changes.

The Abbotsford Canucks came out flying, with Riley Patterson leading the charge in the opening frame. Less than four minutes in, Patterson fired a slapshot from the slot off a feed from Arshdeep Bains, finding the back of the net for his first career AHL goal to make it 1-0 early. With the assist, Bains tied Christian Wolanin for the most assists in franchise history with 109.

The two continued to click just minutes later. Bains buried a rebound from Bennett Schimek to double the lead, while Patterson picked up the secondary assist to cap off a strong start. The Canucks controlled the period, limiting the Wranglers to just four shots and carrying a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

The pace slowed in the second period, but Calgary began to push back. Both Young and Murphy were forced into key saves, while the defensive units held strong as neither team found the back of the net in the middle frame.

In the third, the Canucks looked to put things away. Dino Kambeitz extended the lead early, weaving through traffic before going bar down to make it 3-0 Abbotsford.

The Canucks faced their toughest test late in the game, tasked with killing off a four-minute double minor— their first penalty kill of the night. They stood tall, keeping the Wranglers off the board.

With time winding down, Calgary pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker, but Bennett Schimek sealed the win with an empty-net goal.

Ty Young stopped all 24 shots he faced, earning the shutout and leading the Canucks to a 4-0 victory to complete the weekend sweep over the Calgary Wranglers.

The Abbotsford Canucks headed east to take on their rivals, the Calgary Wranglers, in the final meeting of the season series.

Ty Young got the start between the pipes, facing off against Arsenii Sergeev at the other end. Abbotsford rolled with a 12-and-6 lineup, with Jujhar Khaira and Cooper Walker both returning to the lineup after injury.

The first period moved quickly, with very few whistles and no penalties for either side. Calgary struck first, as captain Clark Bishop fired a one-timer from the right circle to give the Wranglers a 1–0 lead heading into the second. Danila Klimovich had one of Abbotsford’s best chances of the frame, nearly tucking in a wraparound, but Sergeev got the pad across just in time to keep it out.

The second period brought a lot more action. Abbotsford found their equalizer early, with Bennett Schimek ripping a shot from the slot off a clean pass to make it 1–1. Calgary responded on the power play, as Bishop picked up his second of the night by jamming home a rebound to restore the lead. The Wranglers extended it to 3–1 shortly after, with Rory Kerins finishing a backdoor feed from Dryden Hunt.

The Canucks kept pushing and cut into the deficit again, as Klimovich buried a chance from the top of the crease to bring Abbotsford within one. However, Calgary answered once more, with David Silye finding space in the slot and making it 4–2 heading into the third.

Abbotsford wasn’t done yet.

Ben Berard made it a one-goal game early in the third, weaving through traffic and roofing a shot top corner on a solo effort. The late push continued, and with under two minutes remaining, Klimovich struck again—this time finishing a backdoor pass from Jimmy Schuldt to tie the game 4–4.

With under a minute to play, Sergeev lost a skate blade, leaving the net exposed. Berard capitalized, sliding the puck into the open cage to give Abbotsford their first lead of the night with just 40 seconds remaining.

The Canucks completed the comeback in dramatic fashion, securing a 5–4 win over the Wranglers. The two teams will meet one final time tomorrow to close out the season series.

Abbotsford Canucks

The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their home schedule with a hard-fought battle against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Ty Young got the nod between the pipes, squaring off against Victor Östman. The Canucks also shuffled their forward lines, while Nikolai Knyzhov slotted in on the blue line to round out the lineup changes.

The opening frame was relatively quiet, with both teams generating a handful of chances but nothing too dangerous. Abbotsford earned the lone power play of the period, but neither side was able to break through, sending the game into the second period scoreless.

Things picked up in the middle frame. Just over six minutes in, Eduard Salé fired a shot on net that nearly crossed the line. With Ty Young out of position, Carson Rehkopf was quick to pounce on the rebound and open the scoring for Coachella Valley.

The Canucks didn’t take long to respond. A few minutes later, Bennett Schimek found himself all alone and beat Östman blocker side to even things up at one. Shortly after, a shot from Nils Åman took an odd bounce and landed right on the stick of Ben Berard in the slot, who made no mistake to give Abbotsford a 2–1 lead heading into the third.

The Firebirds pushed back early in the final frame. J.R. Avon capitalized on a rebound opportunity, slipping the puck under Young’s right pad to tie the game at two. Both teams pressed for a go-ahead goal in regulation, but neither could find the breakthrough.

In overtime, a costly line change by Abbotsford opened the door for Coachella Valley. Tyson Jugnauth took advantage, finding the back of the net to seal the 4–3 overtime win for the Firebirds.

Abbotsford closes out its home slate and will now hit the road to wrap up the regular season.
