Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed defencemen Nikolai Knyzhov, Derek Daschke and Jayden Lee, as well as forward Nolan Walker to one-year AHL contracts ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Knyzhov, 27, is a seven-year veteran of professional hockey, having skated in 81 NHL games with the San Jose Sharks and 118 AHL games between San Jose, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Grand Rapids. The 6-3, 223-pound defender recorded six points (two goals, four assists) and 21 penalty minutes over 26 AHL games in 2024-25, and also skated in six ECHL games with Cincinnati, where he registered one assist and two penalty minutes. A native of Kemerovo, Russia, Knyzhov made his NHL debut on March 7, 2020 with San Jose, after signing with the Sharks as an undrafted free agent out of SKA St. Petersburg of the Kontinental Hockey League.

Daschke, 27, returns to Abbotsford having been under an AHL contract with the club for the 2023-24 season, where he spent the entirety of the campaign playing for the Canucks’ ECHL affiliate Kalamazoo Wings. The 6-2, 194-pound defender had a career season in 2025-26 with the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies, ranking third in points (56), tied for second in goals (17) and tied for fifth in assists (39) among league defencemen. The Troy, Michigan native has amassed 101 points (34 goals, 67 assists) and 52 penalty minutes over 147 ECHL regular season contests and was named an ECHL First Team All-Star for the 2024-2025 campaign.

Lee, 24, spent the entirety of his first professional season with the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays, where he ranked second among team defencemen in points (32), ranked tied for second in goals (eight) and ranking third in assists (24). The 5-9, 161-pound defender played five collegiate seasons with Quinnipiac University (ECAC) where he captained the team in 2023-24 and captured an NCAA National Championship in 2022-23. The North Vancouver native also skated in two BCHL seasons, spending one year each with the Langley Rivermen and Powell River Kings.

Walker, 26, played his third professional hockey campaign in Sweden’s second-tier league HockeyAllsvenskan, skating in 51 regular season games with IK Oskarshamn. The 5-10, 181-pound centreman ranked fourth on his team in both points (34) and assists (23) in 2024-25. The Anchorage, Alaska native spent the majority of his first two professional seasons in the ECHL between Newfoundland and Kansas City, and also skated in four AHL games with Cleveland while competing on a professional try-out agreement in 2023-24.

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forwards Ben Berard and Zach Okabe, as well as goaltender Jonathan Lemieux to one-year contract extensions through the 2025-26 AHL season.

Berard, 26, spent the majority of his second full professional campaign with Abbotsford’s ECHL affiliate Kalamazoo Wings in 2024-25. He ranked second on the team in points (40) and ranked tied for the team-lead with 20 goals over just 47 games played. The 6-0, 200-pound winger also skated in four games with Abbotsford, recording two goals and four penalty minutes. The Duncan, British Columbia native was originally acquired by the Canucks as a free agent when he signed a one-year AHL contract on July 31, 2024.

Okabe, 24, spent the entirety of his first professional season with Kalamazoo (ECHL), leading the team with 41 points (19 goals, 22 assists) while skating in all 72 of the club’s regular season games in 2024-25. The 5-9, 180-pound winger netted seven power-play goals, three game-winning goals and one shorthanded goal during his impressive rookie campaign. The Okotoks, Alberta native was originally acquired by the Canucks as an undrafted college free agent out of St. Cloud State University (WCHA) when he signed a one-year AHL contract on August 14, 2024.

Lemieux, 24, established a new ECHL career-high by skating in 40 games during his second professional campaign and second season with Kalamazoo in 2024-25. The 6-1, 194-pound netminder recorded a 14-19-4 record with a .905 save percentage and 3.08 goals-against-average while spending the entirety of the season with the Wings. This will be the third contract awarded by Abbotsford to the Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec native, who was originally acquired by the Canucks as an undrafted college free agent out of Concordia University (OUA) in 2023.


CANUCKS EXTEND BERARD, OKABE AND LEMIEUX TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACTS

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Dino Kambeitz to a one-year contract extension through the 2025-26 AHL season, as well as signed forward Cooper Walker and defenceman Joe Arntsen to two-year contract extensions through the 2026-27 AHL season.

“We are excited to bring back some familiar faces for next season,” said Johnson. “Dino, Cooper and Joe each played an important role in securing our Calder Cup championship in 2025, and we expect them to continue making an impact here in Abbotsford.”

Kambeitz, 25, spent the entirety of his fourth professional campaign with Abbotsford in 2024-25, where he recorded an AHL career-high 10 goals while ranking tied for eighth among AHL skaters with a minimum of 50 games played in shooting percentage (21.7%). He recorded the first multi-goal game of his professional career on Nov. 29, 2024 when he scored twice on San Jose’s Yaroslav Askarov, and established a new career-high three points in one game by adding an assist the same night. Kambeitz also skated in his 200th career AHL game on Jan. 19, registering one shot on goal in the Canucks’ 3-2 home victory over San Jose.

The 6-2, 212-pound winger registered 14 points and 45 penalty minutes over 52 regular season games and skated in eight of the Canucks’ postseason games before capturing the Calder Cup with Abbotsford. A native of Parker, Colorado, Kambeitz has now recorded 58 points (32 goals, 26 assists) and 136 penalty minutes over 224 career AHL regular season contests, as well as three points (one goal, two assists) and four penalty minutes over 16 Calder Cup Playoff games.

Walker, 23, spent the entirety of his second professional season with Abbotsford in 2024-25, establishing new career highs in all major statistical categories and ranking third among Canucks in shooting percentage (20.8%). He recorded the first multi-point game of his AHL career on Nov. 16, 2024 with one goal and one assist against Coachella Valley.
The 6-0, 185-pound centre has now recorded 11 points (six goals, five assists) and 10 penalty minutes over 47 AHL games, all of which he has played with Abbotsford. This will be the second AHL contract extension with the Canucks for the Cambridge, Ontario native, who originally joined the organization as an undrafted major junior free agent in 2023.

Arntsen, 22, started his first professional campaign with the Canucks’ ECHL affiliate Kalamazoo Wings, where he recorded 16 points (five goals, 11 assists) and 23 penalty minutes over 43 games played. He was recalled by Abbotsford on Feb. 10 and would stay with the Canucks for the rest of the campaign and skating in two of the team’s postseason games on the way to becoming a Calder Cup Champion.

The 6-3, 210-pound defender made his AHL debut on Feb. 12 at home against San Diego and scored his first career AHL goal (and point) against Bakersfield’s Collin Delia in Abbotsford’s 2-1 road victory over the Condors on April 16. The Swift Current, Saskatchewan native skated in 10 regular season games for Abbotsford and registered two fighting majors. Arntsen was originally acquired by the Canucks as an undrafted major junior free agent when he signed a one-year AHL contract with Abbotsford on April 13, 2024. 


CANUCKS EXTEND AHL CONTRACTS OF CALDER CUP CHAMPIONS KAMBEITZ, WALKER AND ARNTSEN

**Abbotsford, BC** – The American Hockey League (AHL) announced today the league’s complete 2025.26 regular season schedule. The Abbotsford Canucks’ Calder Cup title defence opens on Friday, October 10 and Saturday, October 11 in Henderson, NV, when they take on the Henderson Silver Knights, before heading east to take on the Laval Rocket on Friday, October 17 and Saturday, October 18. Abbotsford opens the home portion of their schedule on Friday, October 24 at 7:00pm and Sunday, October 26 at 4:00pm, when they host the Ontario Reign.

**Key Matchup Info**

- Abbotsford will begin and end the season on the road, closing their regular season with games in Calgary (April 10 and 11), Ontario (April 18), and Coachella Valley (April 19).  

- Of Abbotsford’s 72 regular season games, 64 of them will be played against Pacific Division opponents. Four games (two home, two road) will be played against each of the Manitoba Moose and Laval Rocket, the only non-division opponents on the schedule.  

- For the second consecutive season, Abbotsford’s most frequent opponent will be their Canadian rivals, the Calgary Wranglers. The team will host the Wranglers during their first homestand of the season, on Tuesday, October 28 and Wednesday, October 29, and will kick-off their final road trip of the season in Alberta on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11.

- **Title Defence:** Abbotsford will bring back a number of key members of the 2024.25 Championship team, including Head Coach Manny Malhotra, Captain Chase Wouters, defenceman Jett Woo, and goaltender Nikita Tolopilo, among others.  

- **Banner Raising:** The home opener, set for Friday, October 24 at 7:00pm against the Ontario Reign, will see the team raise their Championship banner, celebrating the team’s historic playoff run that culminated in winning the Calder Cup for the first time in franchise history. This is your chance to witness the team’s first-ever banner raising ceremony and see the Calder Cup in-person before the season kicks off! 

- **Home is where the Heart Is:** The team will have two homestands of six games in 2025.26, including their opening homestand of the season, from October 24 to November 2, as well as from March 6 to March 15.  

- **Sunday Funday:** Abbotsford’s home schedule features seven Sunday games, with puck drop set for 4:00pm, perfect for the whole family to get out and catch a game!  

- **Road Trippin’:** The team will head out on the road for a season-long six game road trip, starting on Saturday, November 15 in San Diego, and wrapping up on Saturday, November 29 in Tucson.  

- **With the Big Club Away, Abby Still Plays:** While the NHL will have an Olympic break during the 2025.26 season, fans can be sure to catch Abbotsford at home, as they host the San Jose Barracuda on Friday, February 6 and Saturday, February 7, as well as the Ontario Reign on Saturday, February 14 and Monday, February 16.  

- **All-Star Classic Hits the Forest City:** This year’s AHL All-Star Classic travels to Rockford, IL, and the BMO Center, home of the Rockford IceHogs. Last season, Abbotsford was represented by Ty Mueller, who became the first rookie in franchise history to participate in the annual All-Star festivities.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS TO HOST CALDER CUP CHAMPIONSHIP CELEBRATION THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 26

Abbotsford, BC – Abbotsford, this one’s for you! For the first time in franchise history, the Abbotsford Canucks have won the Calder Cup! With a 3-2 victory in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals, Abbotsford becomes the first Vancouver Canucks affiliate to capture the AHL championship.

This is the culmination of an incredible two months of Calder Cup playoff hockey. Abbotsford was led offensively by Linus Karlsson (14-12-26) and Arshdeep Bains (7-17-24), while rookie Kirill Kudryavtsev had 10 points (1-9-10) on the back end with a league-leading +18 rating, and Artūrs Šilovs in net, who had a 16-7 record with a 2.01 goals-against average, a .931 save percentage, and five shutouts.  

Other key highlights include the team’s record at home, as they went 10-3 at the Abbotsford Centre, the best home playoff record in the league, Danila Klimovich led the league with two overtime winners, while Karlsson’s 14 goals set the record for most goals in a Calder Cup playoff run by a Swedish player.  

The opening round of the playoffs saw the team face-off against the Tucson Roadrunners in the best-of-three Pacific Division First Round series. Abbotsford defeated the Roadrunners two games to one, highlighted by Šilovs first shutout of the playoffs, a 5-0 win in Game 3.  

Round Two positioned Abbotsford against the Coachella Valley Firebirds. After splitting the first two games of the series in Palm Desert, the team returned home to the Abbotsford Centre, where they took Game 3 by a score of 3-1, and Game 4, which saw Šilovs record his second-consecutive series-clinching shutout, 2-0.  

The Pacific Division Finals had Abbotsford take on the Colorado Eagles, a rematch of the 2024 Pacific Division First Round. Šilovs picked up shutouts in Game 1 (2-0) and the series-clinching Game 5 (5-0), as the team advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in team history.  

Abbotsford held home-ice advantage in the best-of-seven Western Conference Finals against the Texas Stars, winning Games 1 and 2 at home, before taking one of three games in Cedar Park, before returning home and capturing Robert W. Clarke trophy as Western Conference Finals champions in Game 6 with a 4-2 victory.  

The Calder Cup Finals saw Abbotsford take on the Charlotte Checkers for the first time in franchise history. After taking Game 1 in double overtime, courtesy of a goal by Klimovich, the Checkers took Game 2, and the team returned home with the series tied 1-1. Abbotsford exploded for six goals in a 6-1 victory in Game 3, before taking a close Game 4 by a score of 3-2. Charlotte escaped Game 5 with a 4-3 victory in overtime, with the overtime winner coming from Jesse Puljujarvi. Game 6 saw the teams travel back to Charlotte, where on the back of goals by Sammy Blais, Klimovich, and Karlsson, as well as 28 saves by Artūrs Šilovs, the Abbotsford Canucks captured their first-ever Calder Cup Championship.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS CLAIM FIRST-EVER CALDER CUP CHAMPIONSHIP 

The Abbotsford Canucks hit the ice Monday morning for skate in preparation for Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals against the Charlotte Checkers. 

It was like most morning skates, but sitting in the bowl you could hear the pre-skate cheers from the team before they took the ice. Abby is working hard, and the vibes are high – just like the excessive heat, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 36 degrees in Charlotte. 

Artūrs Šilovs and Nikita Tolopilo got first tracks on the fresh sheet, and Danila Klimovich and Jonathan Lekkerimäki were the first of the skaters. The group skated laps, got shots on net, and did work from the circle. 

The Canucks have a 3-2 lead in the series and will be looking to close out tonight, with puck drop at 4:00 p.m. PT.

Game 5 of the Calder Cup Finals was a back-and-forth affair between the Abbotsford Canucks and Charlotte Checkers. A tight third period with neither team edging out the other; the game went into overtime. 

In the first period, Abby had a few grade A chances before the Checkers opened the scoring at 12:55 by forward Ben Steeves. Jack Devine and Oliver Okuliar were credited with the assists. 

Abbotsford drew a penalty putting them on the power play and Linus Karlsson capitalized 22 seconds into the man-advantage, with assists from Arshdeep Bains and Christain Wolanin. 

The score was 1-1 going into the first intermission and the Checkers held the advantage in shots on net 12-11. 

In the second period, Checkers forward Brett Chorske scored at 3:12, Jesse Puljujärvi getting the helper on the play. 

The Canucks answered less than a minute later. Arshdeep Bains scored a breakaway goal as he made a move to the forehand and roofed it. Max Sasson and Kirill Kudryavtsev scored the assists on the goal with Sasson making the pass that led to the Bains’ breakaway. 

Karlsson scored his second of the night off the rush, coming down the left side of the ice and cradling the puck to the center for a wrist shot flying past Kaapo Kahkonen, sending Abbotsford Centre into a frenzy. Mueller and Jett Woo assisted on the play. 

Charlotte’s Rasmus Asplund scored at 12:12, assisted by Eamon Powell and John Leonard, to tie the game 3-3 going into the second intermission. Through the second, Charlotte outshot Abbotsford 14-7. 

The third was scoreless, but the Checkers had nine shots to Abbotsford’s six. In the extra frame, the Canucks outshot Charlotte 8-5. Puljujärvi scored the Checkers’ winning goal that deflected off Guillame Brisebois’ skate and into the net. 

Artūrs Šilovs stopped 36 of 40 shots he faced on the night. 

The last two games of the series are in Charlotte at Bojangles Coliseum, with Game 6 on Monday, June 23rd at 4:00 p.m. PT and if necessary, Game 7 Wednesday, June 25th at 4:00 p.m. PT. 

Checkers Beat Canucks 4-3 in OT, Forcing Game 6 in Charlotte 

The Abbotsford Canucks made the most of their home-ice advantage and the energy from the crowd, to beat the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 at Abbotsford Centre. 

Jonathan Lekkerimäki found his scoring touch, setting the tone early, and Artūrs Šilovs had another impressive performance, turning aside 30 of 32 shots he faced, improving his 2025 playoff record to 15-6. 

Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra was impressed with Lekkerimäki’s poise and the way he played in a big-game environment. 

“The kid has ice in his veins. He doesn't shy away from these big moments. You can see tonight, he had two quality looks, and he made them count. So, that sums up the type of player that he is when given the opportunity and put in the right spot – he'll make good,” Malhotra said. 

In the first period, Lekkerimäki opened the scoring just 75 seconds into the game, finishing a two-on-one off a pass from Ty Mueller. Christian Wolanin got the secondary assist on the play with a strong breakout to spring Mueller and Lekkerimäki. 

Abby had two power play opportunities in the first, but the Checkers’ penalty kill showed why they had the best PK rate during the regular season. The Canucks’ PK was a perfect 3 for 3 in the opening frame and Šilovs was sharp from puck drop, the Checkers holding a 10-6 advantage of shots on net in the first. 

The Canucks took a 1-0 lead into the first break. 

In the second, Phil Di Giuseppe danced through the defence, with a chance on net, but Kaapo Kähkönen was steadfast, keeping it to a one-goal game. 

Coming off a four-point performance in Game 3, Arshdeep Bains went one-on-one against Charlotte defenceman Matt Kiersted, scoring at 11:30 off a wrist shot from the left circle. It was Bains’ sixth goal of the postseason, and Max Sasson and Linus Karlsson assisted on the play, for their eighth and 12th assists in the playoffs respectively. 

Abbotsford and Charlotte were an even 8-8 shots on net in the middle frame, the Canucks taking a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission. 

The Canucks came out strong to start the third period, Lekkerimäki scoring at 3:47 off the rush and deking Kähkönen for his second of the game and third of the postseason. Sammy Blais and Mueller assisted in the play. 

Charlotte answered late in the third period; Checkers forward Kyle Criscuolo scored the team’s first goal of the night on the power play at 8:34. With six skaters on the ice, Checkers forward Jack Devine scored his first goal of the playoffs to bring Charlotte within one with 25.4 seconds left, but the Canucks closed out the game 3-2.

In a tightly contested Calder Cup Finals series that’s seen overtime in both games, the Abbotsford Canucks scored five goals in the third period to beat the Charlotte Checkers 6-1 in regulation.  

Arshdeep Bains led the way with two goals and two assists, Linus Karlsson had one goal and three assists, and Artūrs Šilovs stopped 28 of 29 shots he faced while adding a primary assist in the third period. Special teams was a perfect five-for-five on the evening – the power play was two for two and the penalty kill was three for three. 

Abby had chances early, but Checkers’ forward Oliver Okuliar opened the scoring at 8:22, tallying his fourth goal of the playoffs. 

Abby took a penalty near the end of the first period, but the Canucks’ penalty kill and Artūrs Šilovs were steadfast to close out the first. Shots favoured Charlotte 9-8 at the end of the first, with the Checkers holding a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. 

In the second, Abbotsford’s Sammy Blais capitalized on the power play at 6:43, assisted by Linus Karlsson and Arshdeep Bains, Blais collecting his fifth goal of the playoffs. Abbotsford was three-for-ten on the man-advantage in the series against the Checkers coming into Game 3 and continued to be dynamic on the power play.  

Blais’ goal ignited the crowd, the Canucks using the momentum and finishing the middle frame tied 1-1. The Checkers held a 9-7 shot advantage in the second, and Šilovs made multiple saves in the last two minutes of the stanza to keep the game tied.  

In the third period, Bains was in a seated position on the ice but stayed focused and shoveled the puck to Max Sasson, who made a cross-crease pass to Linus Karlsson for the go-ahead goal. Karlsson scored net front at 3:58 for his 11th goal of the playoffs and with the goal, Karlsson now holds the record for most goals in a single AHL playoff run by a Swedish player. 

On their second power play of the night, Bains scored one by ripping the puck into the crease. It was assisted by Christian Wolanin and Karlsson. The Canucks kept rolling from there; Phil Di Giuseppe scored off the rush for his sixth goal of the postseason, extending Abbotsford’s lead 4-1. Di Giuseppe’s goal was assisted by Šilovs and when Al Murdoch announced the assist, “Arty” chants rang through the arena. 

The Checkers pulled the goalie with just less than four minutes remaining on the clock, just enough time for Bains to score an empty netter from just inside the blue line extended for his second of the evening. Tristen Nielsen scored on a breakaway at 17:34, deking Kaapo Kähkönen and going five-hole, the Canucks earning a 6-1 win. 

The crowd kept the energy up all night and Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra said there’s nothing like playing in front of Abby fans. 

“I can't say enough about our crowd. They continue to amaze us. Can't talk enough about how much energy the guys feed off of from this building. It's electrifying, it's a great atmosphere for hockey, and we're privileged to play in front of fans like this,” Malhotra said. 

The Canucks hold a 2-1 series lead, with Game 4 and 5 back at the Abbotsford Centre on Thursday, June 19th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 21st at 6:00 p.m.

Abbotsford Canucks Take Decisive 6-1 Win Over Charlotte Checkers in Game 3 

For the second time in as many games, we got overtime in the Calder Cup Finals.  

Though the Abbotsford Canucks hit three posts in a 2-2 game, the Charlotte Checkers ultimately found their first win of the series with a power play in overtime.  

Let’s get into everything that happened in game two.  

The Checkers opened the scoring 3:13 into the period when John Leonard scored his seventh goal of the playoffs.   

Abbotsford punched back just 62 seconds later when Sammy Blais and Jujhar Khaira drove the net hard before Blais got the last touch on the puck to even up the score early in the first. It was Blais’ fourth goal of the playoffs, and the game was all square.  

Wilmer Skoog notched Charlotte’s second goal of the period on the power play, as the Checkers picked up three separate opportunities on the man advantage in the opening frame.  

Down by a goal, the Canucks began to generate momentum with continuous strong shifts in the offensive zone. Their pressure earned them a power play late in the period, and Linus Karlsson scored his team-leading fourth power play goal of the playoffs to make it a 2-2 game at the first intermission.  

The physicality cranked up in the second period, and Blais was once again in the middle of the action. The play went to four-on-four with 15:35 remaining in the second period as Oliver Okuliar and Nate Smith took matching slashing penalties.  

Ty Mueller drew the Canucks’ second power play of the game with 8:21 remaining in the period. He drove to the net and was hooked after putting his shoulder down and making a cut to the crease. The Canucks were unsuccessful on their power play but had some quality looks, including Arshdeep Bains right at the beginning of the power play.  

Khaira took a cross-checking penalty with 5:11 remaining in the period, and it sent the Checkers to their fourth power play opportunity of the game. Chase Wouters and Mueller were disruptive during the penalty kill and the Canucks escaped the penalty unscathed.   

Though there were chances for both sides in the second period, we didn’t see either goaltender beaten in the 20 minutes of play. Playing with physicality seemed to be a priority for both teams in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but the teams locked in during the second half of the period, setting up a crucial third period that would begin with a 2-2 score.  

Christian Wolanin rang a wrist shot off the post just three minutes into the third, and Abbotsford was showing some good jump to begin the final stanza of regulation.  

The Canucks put the pedal to the medal at the halfway point of the period and had a stretch of five minutes where they rolled their lines and put up a scoring chance on nearly every shift. Wolanin hit the post once again with eight minutes remaining in the period. Though the team was being heavily outshot, they were buzzing in the offensive zone throughout the third period.  

For the second consecutive period, the goalies held firm, and for the second straight game, we were getting overtime hockey.  

Just 16 seconds into the overtime frame, Karlsson drew a penalty and the Canucks on the man advantage early in overtime.  

Max Sasson ripped a shot off the post to begin the power play, but the game continued. With four seconds remaining in the power play, Wouters took a tripping call in his own zone, and it sent Charlotte to the power play after a few seconds of four-on-four.  

Michael Benning found space on the left half-wall and found the far side corner of the net with a wrist shot to win game two.  

The series is now tied at 1-1 and returns home to the Abbotsford Centre for game three on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. PT. The next three games will be played in Abbotsford, before Games

Calder Cup Finals Shifts to Abbotsford for Game Three After Abbotsford Loses Game Two in Overtime

The wait is over, and the Calder Cup Finals are officially underway. 

Game one went down on Friday night at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Abbotsford Canucks settled the rest versus rust debate with a commanding 4-3 victory in the opening game of the finals! 

Max Sasson opened the scoring 4:34 into the opening period with a power play goal. It was Sasson’s fifth goal of the postseason. Sammy Blais and Kirill Kudryavtsev picked up the assists on the goal and helped give Abbotsford an early lead. 

The Checkers fought back with a pair of goals, including a goal with one second left on the clock to give them a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. 

Former Vancouver Giant, Justin Sourdif scored in the second period to give the Checkers a 3-1 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining in the second period.  

The Canucks fought back and did it quickly when Nate Smith was sprung on a breakaway from Blais, and he made no mistake, roofing the puck to make it a one-goal game in the middle frame. 

The Canucks went on the power play to finish the second period and trailed by one goal as they prepared for the third period.  

It was a busy third period, as the Canucks pushed hard off the opening faceoff. Young defenceman Kirill Kudryavtsev already had an assist in the game and was moving the puck up ice throughout the period as the Canucks looked to even up the score in the third period. 

Ty Mueller scored with 11:46 remaining in the third period after consistent pressure, and we had a tie with just over half the third period to play.  

The Canucks had come back to force the game into overtime. The Checkers were extremely dominant in the extra period, holding the Canucks to just 3 shots the entire frame, while grabbing 15 of their own. Šilovs stood tall, backstopping Abbotsford to another period.  

With both teams visibly tired, the teams looked to end this one quickly. At around 8 and a half minutes in, the Checkers thought they called game when the puck rolled into the Canucks net off the faceoff, but the official called the goal off due to an improper start. With a second chance, the Canucks took advantage, and Danila Klimovich became the hero once again, when he called game in his second double OT, backhanding the puck past Kahkonen. 

Abbotsford took game one of the Calder Cup Finals, taking a 4-3 win over the Charlotte Checkers.

ABBOTSFORD TAKES GAME ONE OF THE CALDER CUP PLAYOFFS WITH A 4-3 DOUBLE OT THRILLER

As the Abbotsford Canucks head to the Calder Cup Finals for the first time, Jett Woo and John Stevens sit down with Canucks Insider Podcast host Chris Faber to talk about the ascension of the franchise, what the fans mean to the team, and the work they’ve put in along the way.

Woo says the way the Abbotsford fans show up for the team is incredible and hearing those “WOO” chants after he throws a big hit pushes him to keep the physicality dialed up.

“I get emotional thinking about it,” Woo said. “The boost we get from the city, from the fans during our games is phenomenal. I played with guys on other teams, and you see them after the game or whatever, and they talk about the fans, how crazy this atmosphere is, how big of a boost it is for us, and how bad it is for them,” Woo said.

“I'm very proud of this city, very proud to say I play here, and every game day here is super, super exciting.”

As part of the leadership group, Woo says it’s non-negotiable for the defence corps to play hard, fast, and physical – a hallmark of Abbotsford Canucks hockey. He says it’s crazy to think about how far they’ve come as a group and how far he’s come as a player over the last four seasons. He talks about the coaching staff getting everyone to buy in and employ playoff-like intensity in practices from the get-go as a big marker for this success this season.

“We're confident if the game were to go to overtime,” Woo said. “It's a weird dynamic how we don't worry; it's a cool feeling to be part of a team like that. Manny [Malhotra] and the coaches have done a great job the whole year hammering our structure and our systems into us and making sure that we buy in," Woo said.

It’s little things like doing down-and-backs every practice with the goal of being conditioned for a deep postseason run. He says the coaching staff has a very professional approach to their schedule with practices, optionals, and days off, so the team gets the most out of their training.

Woo talks about how all of his teammates have stepped up at different times throughout the playoffs and talks about the confidence the group has in their netminder, Artürs Šilovs.

“We go into a game and you don't worry because you know Arty is back there. He's been rock solid for us and we’ve got his back. It gets to the point where we play against a team where they always try to stop up in front of the goalie, in front of Arty, and trying to get in his face, and that really pisses us off. I know everyone in that d-core – everyone on the team – would do anything for Arty, and he's playing great for us. Hopefully we just keep playing for him hard,” Woo said.

Woo also shares what Stevens means to him as a leader and how important it has been for the group to have Stevens travel with the team throughout the playoffs.

“Even when he's not playing, he's around the guys at practice or playing cards or going out for dinners, whatever it is, just making his presence be there. That's enough for that team, and we're all appreciative of him sticking around and battling through what he's going through. We know he's working hard and hopefully he'll be able to get to a point where it's close to playing,” Woo said.

Stevens has enjoyed supporting the team down the stretch, and in a tight and sometime stressful environment he brings positive vibes to the rink every day. Stevens said Abbotsford Canucks captain Chase Wouters asked him to travel with the team throughout the playoffs for support, and he didn’t hesitate to think about it.

Stevens says being a tight-knit group is part of their culture ever since the group moved from Utica to Abbotsford.

“Guys just love being around each other, love being at the rink and, especially this year, we've had such a strong team and a strong bond where guys love putting the work in here,” Stevens said. “In our division too, we're always on the road. We go for two weeks on the road, two weeks at home, so you get a lot of time to spend at the card table, out to dinner, and hanging out with the guys. It creates a – especially this year – really strong team bond.”

Being part of the Canucks’ organization for six years, Stevens says it’s a first-class club and that’s helped them build something special in British Columbia.

“From top to bottom, players, staff, coaches, everyone is just a really quality person. I think that's why we've been able to have success. Because you usually have a good group of people, it's kind of easy to build off that,” he said, adding that General Manager Ryan Johnson has led by example in that regard.

“He's [Johnson] been incredible for me. He's the one who brought me out of Bridgeport and into Utica, and really believed in me as a player and allowed me to become the player that I've become here. I owe a ton to him for just bringing me in. He's just such a good guy, so easy to talk to and talks to you on a personal level. He's always there for you if you need anything at all. So I owe him a ton of credit for just bringing me over here and just believing in me as a player.”

Supporting the group through the playoffs has been fun, and Stevens says the level of compete the Canucks have been playing with is next to none.

“I think it's just a hunger to win in a full team buy in. Guys have been competitive through that whole win streak towards the end of the year, and just wanted perfection, wanted to be better, and really want to win. That collective belief and the team coming together is really what's made us so dangerous down the stretch,” Stevens said.

As an East Coast guy, Stevens talks about embracing the West Coast lifestyle and enjoying everything that living on the west has to offer. He also talks about sage advice he learned when he came into the AHL and what he passes onto young players entering the league.

“I think back to the guys that really helped me when I came into the league. So, I try to do the same thing. Playing every year, you've got to have your routine and eat well and take care of your body, and just do the little things every day, to give yourself a routine that works for you,” Stevens said.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS ADVANCE TO CALDER CUP FINALS! TICKETS ON SALE NOW! 

As the towels spun with pride at the Abbotsford Centre, the Abbotsford Canucks had to work extremely hard to secure their spot in the Calder Cup Finals, knocking out the Texas Stars Sunday night in a very even and tough best-of-seven series.

Abbotsford Captain Chase Wouters has been with the Canucks since their inaugural season in 2021-22. As a 22-year-old, Wouters was named the captain of the team at the beginning of the club's second season. He spoke about what Sunday’s win and advancement into the Calder Cup Finals mean to this young group.

“Yeah, it means everything. It's been a goal of ours all year to get to this point, and obviously I'm really proud of everyone in that room,” said Wouters. “It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of effort throughout the year to get to this point. So, we'll enjoy this one tonight. But there's still lots of work ahead.”

Wouters is the franchise leader in games played for Abbotsford and has seen the community grow with the AHL team over his four years as a Canuck. The support that this group receives from its fans in big moments, like Sunday, provides a massive boost to the players on the ice.

This group continues to grow and come together as the AHL playoffs roll along. The culture in Abbotsford is something that Canucks’ General Manager Patrik Allvin has spoken highly of, and it starts with the players buying in to making hard work fun.

“We all love coming to the rink every day. That's the main thing. This time of the year is about coming together as a team and being brothers for each other, and that's what we're building off right now. It's quite the feeling, we're all very proud of one another in there.”

The Canucks trailed 2-0 late in the second period, when Arshdeep Bains got the Canucks on the board and commenced the comeback.

“There is just so much belief in that room. Bainsy scores a massive goal with a minute left in the second and we came in the locker room and the whole mentality everyone's saying, ‘we're ending it right here, we're going to get the next one,’ and then we're going to find a way to finish it,” said Max Sasson.

The Canucks came out firing in the third period and ultimately outshot the Stars by a 17-4 count, including a stretch where they had 16 shots to the Stars' one. Jujhar Khaira scored early in the third period to tie the game up, and the crowd went wild for the local guy scoring his third goal of the AHL playoffs.


The Canucks continued their pressure and Max Sasson tipped in an Akito Hirose point-shot to give Abbotsford their first lead of the game.


“I've been pretty snake bitten. I've had a lot of shots, and for one finally to go in, in that moment, I feel like that's how it always goes. It felt really good. And obviously it's a massive goal for the team," said Sasson.

“When we get a lead in the third, we're a really hard team to break down with our structure. So that [celebration], I just let it all out. It felt like the monkey was off my back, and the crowd was insane, the whole place. I kept on just looking around and was like ‘wow,’ that was so cool to see.”

Head coach Manny Malhotra spoke to the team’s depth being one of the primary reasons why the Canucks feel confident even when they are trailing. He was rolling all four lines throughout the third period, and the Canucks kept the pedal to the metal on the backs of every player giving a valiant effort in the final frame.

“It's obviously a huge step for us as a group, as an organization, and I'm happy to see the guys getting rewarded for the way they're playing and their commitment to what we're trying to do here,” said Malhotra.

Malhotra gave plenty of credit to the fans at the Abbotsford Centre as the building was buzzing from the opening puck drop to the trophy presentation.

“I'll say it again and again. Our group gets so much energy off the life in this building,” said Malhotra. “The fans have been outstanding [throughout] the entire playoff run. They're a big part of our success. This atmosphere here to play in front of has been really special for the guys, and we’re looking to continue that.”

Abbotsford has advanced into the Calder Cup Finals and will face the Charlotte Checkers, the AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers.

They have a couple of former Abbotsford Canucks on their roster, including Will Lockwood and Aidan McDonough (McDonough has not played since November). Zac Dalpe has been injured since December, but he played 55 games for the Vancouver Canucks during the 2013-14 season.

Between the pipes, the Checkers are led by 28-year-old Kaapo Kähkönen. The Finnish netminder won gold with his country at the 2016 World Junior Championships in Vancouver. He is 10-2 in these playoffs and holds a 1.73 goals-against average, 0.927% save percentage, and has one shutout.

The Checkers have won their last eight games, including a sweep in the Conference Finals and Division Finals.

As for the format of the finals, the series will begin on Friday in Charlotte, as they are the higher-seeded team. Games will take place every other day, and the first two games will be held in Charlotte before returning to Abbotsford for games three, four, and five. Games six and seven will be back in Charlotte.

The Abbotsford Canucks were just one win away from punching their ticket to the Calder Cup Finals. Returning home for Game 6, they hosted the Texas Stars on Abbotsford ice with a chance to close out the Western Conference Final.

Artūrs Šilovs and Magnus Hellberg once again started in net for their respective teams.

The Canucks came out firing, generating a flurry of chances early on. Hellberg stood tall, turning away everything sent his way. Abbotsford killed off their first penalty, then earned a power play of their own, but neither side could find the back of the net. With under two minutes left in the first, Sammy Blais rang a shot off the post, leading to a turnover. The Stars took advantage, as Curtis McKenzie and Matej Blümel broke out on a two-on-one, and Blümel finished the play to give Texas a 1–0 lead heading into the intermission.

In the second, the Canucks pushed back, but both sides traded chances at even strength without breaking through. That changed at the 13-minute mark when Harrison Scott tipped one in from the crease, doubling the Stars’ lead. Down 2–0, Abbotsford looked for a spark. Matching minors to Arshdeep Bains and Luke Krys created a 4-on-4, and just as Bains stepped out of the box, he jumped into the rush and buried a rebound from Christian Wolanin’s shot to get the Canucks on the board with just over a minute left in the period.

That late goal gave Abbotsford life heading into the third—and they wasted no time. Just 90 seconds in, Jujhar Khaira finished a cross-ice feed from Max Sasson to tie things up at 2. The Canucks kept pressing, and just past the halfway mark, Sasson tipped home a blue-line shot from Akito Hirose to give Abbotsford their first lead of the night.

With the game winding down and a Finals berth in sight, the Canucks tightened up defensively. Then, with 45 seconds remaining, Bains sealed it with his second of the game—an empty-netter that made it 4–2.

The Abbotsford Canucks complete the comeback and are heading to the Calder Cup Finals! They’ll face the Charlotte Checkers, starting the series on the road June 13. Games 1 and 2 will be in Charlotte, before the series shifts back to Abbotsford for Game 3 and 4 on June 17 and 19, and, if necessary, Game 5 on June 21.

OUR TIME IS NOW: ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS TO HOST REMAINDER OF THE WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS

The Abbotsford Canucks were just one win away from advancing to the Calder Cup Finals as they faced off against the Texas Stars for Game 5, looking to close out the Western Conference Finals on Texas ice.

Artūrs Šilovs remained in net for the Canucks, going head-to-head with Magnus Hellberg at the other end.

Abbotsford came out strong to start the game, earning a powerplay just 51 seconds in. They generated a few solid chances, but Hellberg turned them all aside to keep the Canucks off the board. In a quick turn of events, Abbotsford went from having the man advantage to being shorthanded. During the penalty kill, Justin Hryckowian fired a no-look shot that slipped through Šilovs’ legs, giving the Stars a much-needed 1-0 lead early in the game.

The teams exchanged another pair of penalties later in the period, but both goaltenders stood tall. Texas carried their 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Both sides pushed in the second period, and the Canucks began to generate more consistent offensive pressure. Danila Klimovich came closest to equalizing when his shot rang off the post, but the puck stayed out. With just under a minute to go, tensions boiled over and a brawl broke out on the ice. Seven players—across both teams—were sent down the tunnel early. The Canucks made one last push before the buzzer, but the Stars held on to their one-goal lead heading into the third.

With just 20 minutes standing between them and a Calder Cup Finals berth, the Canucks came out determined in the final frame. Two minutes in, they were awarded their third powerplay of the night—and this time they made it count. Arshdeep Bains scored his first of the playoffs with a shot from the slot, tying the game and reigniting Abbotsford’s momentum.

The Canucks stayed hot, applying heavy pressure, but Hellberg and Šilovs both held their ground, sending the game to overtime for the third time this series.

This one didn’t last long. Just two minutes into the extra frame, Texas captain Curtis McKenzie ended it, burying a feed from Jack Becker behind the net.

With the win, Texas forces the series back to Abbotsford for Game 6 on Sunday. The Canucks still lead the series 3-2.

Abbotsford falls 2-1 in overtime, shifting the series back to Abbotsford

The Abbotsford Canucks squared off against the Texas Stars for Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, aiming to grab their third win of the series and take a commanding lead. Artūrs Šilovs and Remi Poirier once again manned the nets as the series resumed in Texas.

Looking to set the tone early, the Canucks had their momentum halted just three minutes in with a penalty to Chase Wouters. Texas didn’t waste the opportunity—Matej Blumel opened the scoring on the powerplay, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead. Trouble continued as Jujhar Khaira was called for another penalty shortly after. The Canucks were pinned in their zone, outshot 7-0 on the PK, but managed a critical kill before resetting.

The game turned when Linus Karlsson buried a feed from Max Sasson to tie the game 1-1. Soon after, the Canucks earned their first powerplay of the night. Though it came up empty, Tristen Nielsen fired a shot just as the advantage expired, giving Abbotsford a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

The second period was just as action-packed. The Canucks killed off another penalty, but Texas struck again midway through—Jack Becker buried a rebound to even the score. Just two minutes later, Cameron Hughes deflected a Michael Karow shot off his skate to give the Stars a 3-2 lead.

But Abbotsford wasn’t done. A net-front battle saw Victor Mancini jam home a rebound to tie it again. Then, with momentum building, Nielsen forced a turnover in the neutral zone and finished with a silky backhand for his second of the night. The Canucks headed to the third with a 4-3 edge.

With Texas turning to Magnus Hellberg in net, the final 20 minutes saw tight defense and clutch saves. Abbotsford couldn’t extend their lead, leaving the margin for error small. The Stars pulled their goalie late, and with just 18 seconds left on the clock, Justin Hryckowian found the equalizer through traffic—sending Game 4 to overtime.

The first OT period was a goalie showcase, with Šilovs and Hellberg trading big saves. A late penalty to Curtis McKenzie gave Abbotsford a golden opportunity to start the second OT on the powerplay. Though they couldn’t convert on the man advantage, the breakthrough came just 3:21 into the period—Danila Klimovich played hero, backhanding the game-winner to seal a 5-4 victory for the Canucks.

With the win, Abbotsford takes a 3-1 series lead and now sits just one victory away from punching their ticket to the Calder Cup Finals.

The teams will rematch Friday in Texas.

The Abbotsford Canucks flew south of the border to Austin, Texas for the first time in franchise history to take on the Texas Stars in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.

Goaltenders Artūrs Šilovs and Remi Poirier continued their battle between the pipes as the Canucks looked to secure their third win of the series.

The pace of this game differed significantly from the first two in Abbotsford. Just over six minutes in, the Stars took a penalty for hooking, and the Canucks capitalized. Christian Wolanin fired a shot from the left circle that hit the back bar, giving Abbotsford an early 1–0 lead.

Shortly after returning to even strength, Jett Woo was sent to the box, and the Stars responded quickly. Kole Lind tied the game at one with a power-play goal from the right circle. Both teams continued to trade penalties, but while the Canucks couldn’t convert, the Stars made the most of their opportunities. Matej Blümel scored to give Texas a 2–1 lead.

Minutes later, with the Canucks on the power play, Blümel and Arttu Hyry broke out on a 2-on-1. Šilovs couldn’t get across in time, and the Stars extended their lead to 3–1 with just over a minute to go in the period. However, the Canucks weren’t done. Still on the man advantage, Arshdeep Bains fired a shot from the right point that Linus Karlsson deflected in front to bring Abbotsford back within one. After a flurry of five goals, the period ended with the Canucks trailing 3–2.

Looking to build on their late momentum, Abbotsford came out strong in the second period, staying disciplined and generating quality chances. But Poirier stood tall in net. At the 11-minute mark, Antonio Stranges broke free on a breakaway and buried the lone goal of the period, giving Texas a 4–2 lead.

In the third, the Canucks pressed to close the gap and force overtime. They were granted an early power play but couldn’t convert. Midway through the period, they got another opportunity with the man advantage, but the Stars struck again—shorthanded again—as Michael Karow scored Texas’ second shorty of the night to make it 5–2.

Abbotsford continued to battle, generating more chances, but Poirier was rock-solid through the final 40 minutes.

The Canucks dropped Game 3 but still hold a 2–1 series lead, with a chance to bounce back on Wednesday. Games 4 and 5 will be played on June 4th and 6th in Texas, with a return to Abbotsford if necessary.

The Abbotsford Canucks hosted the Texas Stars for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, aiming to secure their second win of the series before heading to Austin, Texas.

Artūrs Šilovs got the start in net once again for Abbotsford, going head-to-head with Texas goaltender Remi Poirier.

The game started at a fast pace, with both teams generating quality scoring chances early. One of the best opportunities came on a breakaway by Linus Karlsson, but Remi Poirer got infront of it. Each team also exchanged a penalty, but both Šilovs and Poirier stood tall in their respective creases, turning away every shot to keep the first period scoreless.

The second period remained a tight battle, with the Canucks facing some adversity after spending a significant amount of time on the penalty kill. Down a man for six minutes, Abbotsford struggled to generate much offense but managed to stifle the Stars' attack. Šilovs was instrumental in keeping the game locked at 0-0. Near the end of the period, Tristen Nielsen had a golden chance on a breakaway, but Poirier shut the door once again, sending the game into the final frame still tied.

With 20 minutes to play, the Canucks came out strong, looking to take control. After sustained pressure in the offensive zone, Akito Hirose broke the deadlock seven minutes into the third, scoring his first of the playoffs as the puck trickled past Poirier to give Abbotsford a 1-0 lead.

With the lead in hand, the Canucks focused on closing out the game. Despite creating more scoring chances, they found themselves shorthanded once again late in the period. Thanks to a stellar penalty kill and Šilovs' rock-solid goaltending, Abbotsford held on for the shutout victory.

Šilovs finished the night with a perfect performance, backstopping the Canucks to a 1-0 win and a 2-0 series lead as the series shifts to Texas.

The teams now head to Austin, where Games 3, 4, and potentially 5 will be played.

The Abbotsford Canucks made history as they punched their ticket to the Western Conference Finals against the Texas Stars. En route, they’ve moved past the Tucson Roadrunners (2-1), Coachella Valley Firebirds (3-1), and the Colorado Eagles (3-2).

After finishing the Pacific Division Finals series against the Eagles, Guillaume Brisebois and Ty Mueller sat down with Canucks Insider Podcast host Chris Faber, to talk about their historic playoff run, being British Columbians, and what the fans mean to this Abbotsford Canucks team.

Brisebois also talks about his d-partner Cole McWard, playing on his offside, and his first NHL game.

Mueller shares his thoughts on his rookie year, where he was an AHL All-Star, made his NHL debut, and other milestones he’s reached this season.

They both discuss goaltending throughout the playoffs, highlighting how teammate Artūrs Šilovs has given the team incredible confidence to match up against any opponent during their playoff run, coming up big in do-or-die game situations. A significant part of Abbotsford’s success is that everyone plays their role effectively, and they are committed to adhering to their structure.

“We just rally together, and when the big moments are there, the guys are stepping up to the plate. We’ve got Arty in net too, that’s been amazing since the start of the playoffs - he’s been great. Everyone is doing their job, and guys actually know their job on the team. They’re not trying to do something else that isn’t them. It’s been amazing since the beginning of the playoffs,” Brisebois said.

“We’ve all just been on the same page and been really focused on whatever it is: the face off and knowing where we’re going with the puck before it’s even dropped, or if they win the face off, which guys we’re going to and what lanes we have to be in. Really focusing on not allowing them to get anything to the middle or through the middle,” Mueller said.

Being drafted by the franchise in 2015, Brisebois started with the Utica Comets in the 2017-18 season. He feels that the organization has always been invested in his success and says that when the AHL team moved to Abbotsford in 2021-22, he felt welcomed by the passionate fan base, and enjoys being part of the Abbotsford community.

“It’s special. It’s really nice to be able to meet new people. Sometimes, when I think back at it, ‘I’m just Guillaume and why would I have an impact on someone?’ But sometimes it really does,” Brisebois said. “When I was younger, it was the same thing. I was looking up the guys, the professionals, and it’s really fun giving to the next one [generation].”

Mueller talks about what it’s like having Manny Malhotra as a coach and that Malhotra’s direct approach resonates with him. Mueller talks about how work in the faceoff circle is different in the pro game than in college and says he’s learned a lot from Malhotra in that regard.

“It’s awesome. Anytime you can learn from someone who’s had that experience and dominated in the circle, it’s pretty lucky,” Mueller said. “So many little things he’ll teach you with timing, or where to bring your stick to, and where to attack the other guy’s stick. [There’s] a lot of different little intricacies that he’s taught, and it’s helped a lot.”

For the first time in franchise history, the Abbotsford Canucks hosted the Texas Stars in the Western Conference Finals.

Artūrs Šilovs got the start in net for the Canucks once again, going up against new netminder, Remi Poirier for Texas.

The game began with a feeling-out process, as this was the first time the two teams had met since the franchise’s relocation to Abbotsford. Texas came out stronger, generating quality chances early, but Šilovs stood tall to keep things scoreless. Just under halfway through the period, it was Kole Lind who broke the deadlock, hammering home a one-timer from the slot after a slick setup by Cameron Hughes.

Abbotsford responded with pressure of their own, creating several chances late in the period. But Poirier was sharp with the glove, turning everything away—until the final minute. Guillaume Brisebois pounced on his own rebound and buried it after Poirier went down at the post, tying the game 1–1 heading into the second.

With the score level, the Canucks came out with confidence in the middle frame. Šilovs made more key saves to keep it even, and six minutes in, Linus Karlsson and Ty Mueller executed a beautiful fake-out sequence. Karlsson dished it across the crease to Mueller, who deflected it past Poirier to give the Canucks a 2–1 lead.

Soon after, Abbotsford earned the game’s first power play off a holding penalty to Matěj Blümel. The Canucks generated looks but couldn’t convert. Five minutes after returning to even strength, Texas responded. Antonio Stranges found the rebound from a Trey Taylor shot and tucked it in, tying the game at 2–2.

Heading into the third period, the Canucks had 20 minutes to make a statement—and they came out flying, outshooting Texas 15-9. Despite the barrage, Poirier kept the Stars alive. A late penalty against the Canucks with under three minutes to go added tension, but Abbotsford killed it off, sending the game to overtime.

In sudden death, the Canucks continued to apply pressure. Šilovs came up big again with several clutch saves. Then, around five minutes into OT, Abbotsford broke through. Christian Wolanin launched a shot from the blue line that snuck through Poirier’s pads, clinching a dramatic Game 1 win for the Canucks.

The green-on-green battle continues Saturday at the Abbotsford Centre, where the Canucks will look to take a 2–0 series lead.

The Abbotsford Canucks are getting ready to take another step in franchise history as they prepare to face the Texas Stars in the Calder Cup Western Conference Finals – the deepest playoff run in Abbotsford Canucks history.

It’s been a season defined by structure, belief, and commitment. The Canucks have put in the work, and as captain Chase Wouters says, there’s a lot of belief in the dressing room.

“It's really special,” Wouters said. “It's pretty cliché, but you train all summer for these moments. Everyone wants to be playing this time of the year, that's what's exciting about it. We're just grateful to be in this situation.”

With three rounds behind them, the Canucks have already made history, but the mindset remains grounded. They’ve gained confidence through this playoff run, but the group knows each series is a fresh start, and tomorrow night is a new step in the journey ahead.

Abbotsford has played to their identity throughout the playoffs, sticking to a structured, supportive game, which is important when the pace and pressure intensify this time of year.

“It's about having your teammates there for when there is a breakdown. I think we've been good at helping each other out and protecting each other out there. And that's obviously been a big part of our success so far,” Wouters said.

The Texas Stars are led by three of the top scorers throughout the playoffs: Justin Hryckowian (7-8-15), Cameron Hughes (3-11-14), and former Canuck Kole Lind (6-5-11). The Canucks are studying film to prepare and will learn tendencies of the Stars as the series goes along, but the focus remains internal: playing to their structure and their game.

“You’ve got to know when those guys are out there,” Wouters said. “But at the end of the day, it's about what we do and our game to be able to shut those guys down. They're really good players, they're a really good team, and they're going to make stuff happen. It's about what we can control and what we can do in that room."

Abbotsford’s leadership group has been a steadying presence through the postseason, and that composure has been seen throughout the roster, including the team’s blueline, which continues to grow with each series.

23-year-old defenceman Cole McWard echoed Wouters’ mindset, highlighting how the coaching staff, led by Manny Malhotra, continues to preach process over outcome.

“Manny always talks about the process. Whether we win or lose a game, we're more focused on the details of how we played, how we're carrying out our plan,” McWard said. “There's confidence in that we've been able to do that so far, and I think we still have another level to reach, to hit that consistently, and that's what we're going to need to win.”

McWard contributed a key goal in Game 5 against the Colorado Eagles, notching his first of the playoffs, capitalizing on an odd-man rush, to give the Canucks a 3-0 lead going into the third period.

"Bainsy [Arshdeep Bains] got the puck in the middle, and he made a great play underneath, and laid it out to an area, and I grabbed it. I kind of felt someone behind me, like someone was going to join, so I went to the right side to buy him a little bit of time. I looked over and it was Briser [Guillaume Brisebois] - a little bit scary being on a two-on-one with your D partner,” McWard laughed. “He took the pass away, and I shot it, put it where I wanted, and luckily, it got through. It was a big goal to give us confidence going in that third with a good lead.”

Looking ahead to the series against Texas, McWard says the team’s structure and consistency and setting the tone early will be crucial against a high-powered Stars offence.

“We keep playing our game, putting up scores that we can win with, keeping the puck out of our net, then everything's going to take care of itself,” McWard said. “If we can add that scoring, if we can jump up in the play and create that offence, and that's great.”

“I think that we come in and we have a strong game one, be physical and we let them know that it’s going to be long series, that's our best foot forward.”

The team is trusting the process that got them to the Western Conference Finals and will bring their best on Thursday night.

Abbotsford Canucks Set for Historic Game One of Calder Cup Western Conference Final

In a do-or-die game in Loveland, CO, the Abbotsford Canucks and Colorado Eagles suited up for Game 5 of Round 3 in the Calder Cup Playoffs.

Artūrs Šilovs started in goal for the Canucks while Trent Minor took the opposing net for the Eagles.

Both teams came out firing to start the series-clinching game, exchanging high danger changes in the first five minutes. While the Eagles controlled the pace of play for the first half of the frame, Šilovs made several key saves to hold Colorado off the score sheet.

Midway through the period, the pace shifted as the Canucks ramped up the pressure and Šilovs held strong in net. After a high-stick on Phil Di Giuseppe, the Canucks earned a two-minute man-advantage with 2:46 to go in the period. 

Coming into the Colorado zone off the rush, Linus Karlsson passed the puck to Arshdeep Bains, who found Karlsson once again inside the right circle. The Swedish forward’s shot was perfectly aimed, finding the back of the net to get Abbotsford on the board first.

60 seconds later, the Canucks struck again. After a hit from Chase Wouters to separate the puck from the home team, Jett Woo grabbed the puck in the neutral zone and skated in on the offence. Woo passed it to Di Giuseppe, whose wrist shot sent the puck past Minor for the insurance goal.

The second frame remained in a deadlock for the first half, but it was Cole McWard who broke the stand still. Coming in hot on a two-on-one with Guillaume Brisebois, the defenceman opted to keep the puck and take a shot that went through the five-hole of Minor. 

As the period came to a close, tensions flared, giving opposing penalties to both teams to start the next frame.

Abbotsford opened the third period up with a bang, capitalizing on the extra room on the ice just 34 seconds in. Streaking into the Colorado zone with speed, Ty Mueller made a drop pass to Karlsson, who found his own rebound and netted it to extend the lead to 4-0. 

With six minutes remaining in the frame, the Eagles pulled Miner for the extra attacker. The Canucks were able to capitalize on the empty netter, as Di Giuseppe scored his second of the night with just over four minutes to go. 

As the clock wound down, Šilovs stayed strong to secure the shutout and help his team earn a spot in the Western Conference Finals.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS ADVANCE TO WESTERN CONFERENCE FINALS! TICKETS ON SALE NOW! 

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off Game 4 against the Colorado Eagles with hopes of clinching a win and advancing to the next round.

Goaltenders remained the same for both sides—Artūrs Šilovs got the start for the Canucks, while Trent Miner took his place in net for the Eagles.

Looking to set the tone early, the Canucks looked to come out strong. Just minutes into the game, Jujhar Khaira broke free on a breakaway, but Miner made a key save to keep the game scoreless. Shortly after, the Eagles responded. Jean-Luc Foudy found the back of the net just three and a half minutes into the period, giving Colorado an early 1-0 lead. The Canucks pushed hard to even the score before the first intermission, but Miner remained sharp. At the other end, Šilovs shut down the Eagles’ remaining chances, keeping it a 1-0 game after 20 minutes.

In the second period, Abbotsford continued to push for the equalizer. Five minutes in, they earned the first power play of the game but were unable to capitalize. The Eagles extended their lead around the 11-minute mark, as Jayson Megna buried a shot to make it 2-0. The Canucks faced more adversity when Phil Di Giuseppe was sent off for cross-checking, but they successfully killed the penalty. However, a subsequent penalty proved costly—Tye Felhaber scored on the man advantage, breaking Abbotsford’s perfect penalty kill streak and sending the Eagles into the final frame up 3-0.

With 20 minutes left to save their playoff hopes, the Canucks opened the third with a power play but couldn't find the net. Instead, they were forced to kill off two consecutive penalties. Midway through the period, during 4-on-4 play, Nate Smith finally got Abbotsford on the board with a goal in front. Despite ramping up the pressure and pulling Šilovs for an extra attacker in the final moments, the Canucks couldn’t beat Miner again.

The Eagles held on for a 3-1 win, tying the series and forcing a decisive Game 5—winner takes all—set for Monday.

The Abbotsford Canucks headed south of the border to Loveland, Colorado, continuing their Pacific Division series against the Colorado Eagles after splitting the first two games at home.

Artūrs Šilovs once again got the start in net for the Canucks, with Trent Miner between the pipes for the Eagles.

The game got off to a rough start for Abbotsford when Tristen Nielsen was called for a penalty just 28 seconds in, putting his team on an early penalty kill. Fortunately, Abbotsford’s stellar postseason penalty kill held strong, keeping the game scoreless. The Eagles came out firing, registering several early shots before the Canucks found their rhythm. Just over four minutes in, John Ludvig snuck a shot past Šilovs to give Colorado a 1-0 lead.

Abbotsford responded midway through the period, as Victor Mancini jumped on a rebound from a Jonathan Lekkerimäki shot and buried it to tie the game at 1. The teams exchanged chances for the rest of the period, and with a delayed penalty call against the Canucks in the final minute, the Eagles got some extra pressure with a 6-on-5 advantage.

Tied 1-1 heading into the second, the Canucks started the frame shorthanded but once again killed off the penalty. The rest of the period remained even, with Šilovs making some big saves to keep it close. However, with one minute left, Jake Wise capitalized from the slot to restore the Eagles’ lead at 2-1 heading into the third.

The Canucks came out with urgency in the final 20 minutes, generating several high-quality chances while Šilovs continued to stand tall in net. Abbotsford earned a power play midway through the period but couldn’t convert. Moments after returning to even strength, Max Sasson fired home a feed from Lekkerimäki to tie the game at 2 with 10 minutes remaining.

Both teams pushed for a winner, but the game remained deadlocked through regulation, sending it to overtime.

Playoff OT is nothing new for these two teams, who also battled past regulation in last year’s postseason. Four minutes in, the Canucks earned a power play. Just seconds later, matching penalties to Lekkerimäki and Wagner saw Abbotsford remain with the man advantage. Colorado nearly ended it with a two on one chance, but Šilovs made the save of the night to keep the Canucks alive.

As double overtime loomed, Linus Karlsson played hero, jamming in a loose puck with just over a minute left in the first OT to seal a 3-2 win for Abbotsford.

The Canucks now lead the series 2-1 and will look to close it out in Game 4 on Friday in Colorado.

The Abbotsford Canucks hosted Game 2 of the Pacific Division Finals against the Colorado Eagles, aiming to secure a second straight win before hitting the road to finish the series.

Artūrs Šilovs once again got the start in net for the Canucks, facing off against Trent Miner for Colorado.

The game got off to a fast start—this time in favour of the Eagles. Less than two minutes in, Jake Wise opened the scoring when a point shot made its way past Šilovs, giving Colorado an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles came out strong, dominating much of the opening frame by disrupting Abbotsford’s transitions and generating consistent pressure.

Despite the early push from Colorado, the Canucks responded late in the first. Around the 15-minute mark, Jonathan Lekkerimäki tied the game 1-1, picking up a rebound off a Victor Mancini shot and sending it past Miner just before the intermission.

The second period proved more difficult for Abbotsford. Both teams earned power play chances, but neither could convert. Midway through the frame, the Eagles regained the lead. Wyatt Aamodt snuck a sharp-angle shot in from the goal line to put Colorado up 2-1. The Canucks kept the pressure on with several quality chances, but Colorado struck again before the period ended. Chris Wagner deflected a pass from T.J. Tynan past Šilovs to extend the lead to 3-1 heading into the final frame.

Colorado kept rolling in the third. Just over five minutes in, Ivan Ivan scored from the left circle, making it 4-1. The Canucks kept battling and were rewarded when captain Chase Wouters scored from in close to cut the deficit to 4-2. With time winding down, Abbotsford pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Jayson Megna took advantage and sealed the game with an empty-net goal, pushing the Eagles' lead to 5-2.

Abbotsford wasn’t done yet. On a late power play, Linus Karlsson fired one home from the goal line to make it 5-3 with just over a minute left. Despite a hard push to the final buzzer, the Canucks couldn’t complete the comeback.

The series is now tied 1-1 and shifts to Loveland, Colorado for the remaining games, where the Canucks will look to close it out on the road.

The Abbotsford Canucks opened the Pacific Division Finals on home ice against the Colorado Eagles, aiming to set the tone early in the series. Artūrs Šilovs got the nod in net once again for Abbotsford, facing off against Colorado’s Trent Miner.

The opening period was a tight, physical battle as both teams spent the first 20 minutes feeling each other out. Shots were limited on both ends, and while each side took a penalty, neither power play could convert. Goaltending was the story early, with both Šilovs and Miner standing tall to keep the game scoreless heading into the first intermission.

The second period saw Abbotsford begin to generate more momentum, especially after successfully killing off another penalty. The Canucks sustained offensive pressure, and their efforts finally paid off with just under five minutes to play in the frame. After Wyatt Aamodt was called for a penalty, Abbotsford went to work on the power play. Sammy Blais found Ty Mueller in the slot, and Mueller made no mistake, ripping a shot past Miner to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. The remainder of the period continued with back-and-forth action, but Abbotsford held their lead heading into the third.

With just a one-goal margin, the final frame was a defensive match. Both teams tightened up, with few clean chances allowed. As the clock ticked down, Abbotsford faced late pressure after Linus Karlsson took a penalty with just over three minutes to go. The Eagles pulled Miner for the extra attacker, creating a 6-on-4 advantage. But the Canucks stayed composed and held firm. With just five seconds left, Victor Mancini sealed the deal, chasing down the puck and scoring into the empty net to secure the 2-0 win.

Šilovs was perfect once again, earning his second consecutive shutout and sending Abbotsford to a crucial Game 1 victory.

The teams will face off again on Sunday in Abbotsford for Game 2—the final home game before the series shifts to Loveland, Colorado.

The Abbotsford Canucks looked to clinch their spot in the Pacific Division Finals as they faced off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in Game 4.

Artūrs Šilovs made his seventh consecutive postseason start, continuing his strong run between the pipes. At the other end, the Canucks were up against a familiar netminder in Nikke Kokko.

The game began at an even pace, with both teams playing strong 200-foot hockey. Coachella managed to get a few early shots on goal and blocked several Abbotsford attempts in their do-or-die matchup. Just under nine minutes into the first period, John Hayden was called for interference, putting the Firebirds down a man. Abbotsford capitalized on the power play about a minute in, when Max Sasson buried a rebound off a shot from Kirill Kudryavtsev, giving the Canucks a 1-0 lead midway through the period.

A few minutes later, Chase Wouters took a penalty, but Abbotsford’s penalty kill stayed sharp, keeping the Firebirds off the board. The Canucks carried their one-goal lead into the intermission, though a penalty at the buzzer meant they would begin the second period short-handed.

Abbotsford successfully killed off the early penalty and continued to frustrate Coachella’s attack. The Firebirds kept the pressure on, blocking shots and creating chances, but Šilovs stood tall. Despite a couple of 4-on-4 stretches, neither team could find the back of the net, and the score remained 1-0 heading into the third period.

With 20 minutes between them and the third round, the Canucks buckled down. The Firebirds, desperate to stay alive, battled hard and both teams earned a power play opportunity, but again, neither could convert. As the clock ticked down, Coachella pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. It backfired when Phil Di Giuseppe found Linus Karlsson wide open, and Karlsson fired the puck into the empty net, sealing a 2-0 lead with under two minutes remaining.

The Canucks held on to complete the shutout and eliminate the Firebirds — the Calder Cup finalists in back-to-back seasons — advancing to the Pacific Division Finals.

Abbotsford will now host the Colorado Eagles for Games 1 and 2 of Round 3 on May 16th and 18th.
