The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their final series on this home stand, taking on the Tucson Roadrunners. The two teams currently split their series 2-2, and are both coming off 4 straight wins, so it’s expected to be a battle.  

Artūrs Šilovs returned to the Abbotsford lineup, starting in net tonight against Matthew Villalta for the Roadrunners.
The Canucks got things started with their European stars Aatu Räty, Nils Åman and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Ty Mueller followed suit, centering Arshdeep Bains and Danila Klimovich. Sammy Blais made his home debut in Abbotsford tonight, lining up next to Nate Smith and Chase Wouters, and Ty Glover and Dino Kambeitz bookended John Stevens to round out the offence. 

On defence, Elias Pettersson and Jett Woo stuck together to kick things off, and Mark Friedman drew back into the lineup next to Guillaume Brisebois. Christian Wolanin and Cole McWard were the final two men in the equation, to complete the Canucks lineup. 

With both teams looking to snap the others' win streak, both teams came out hot. The Abby Canucks took charge quickly, registering shot after shot on Villalta, but he stood on his head. Šilovs didn’t face as many shots but he was also strong in net for the Canucks, both goalies leaving this game in the hands of their offense. The Canucks were the first to crack the scoreboard when a laser from Jonathan Lekkerimäki went straight past Villalta to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. The Canucks were hit with some consecutive penalties leaving them on a 5-on-3 twice in the final few minutes, but both the defence and Šilovs held on killing them off, and the Canucks would head to the second period up by 1. 

With 40 seconds remaining on the penalty, the Canucks got to work on the kill and successfully held on to their lead. The netminders continued making some solid saves for their teams, but just under the halfway point, the roadrunners evened the score. Hunter Drew ripped one from afar, to light the lamp for Tucson, and tied up the game at 1. A pair of penalties were exchanged between the teams, allowing for a 4 on 4 opportunity, but neither team got it done. Twenty seconds later, however, a setup from Arshdeep Bains allowed Danila Klimovich the opportunity to take his sharp-angle shot and restored the Canucks lead.  Klimovich’s 10th of the season gave the Canucks a 1 goal lead once again heading into the final frame. 

Early into the third, Arshdeep Bains found himself on a breakaway early on in the third and came extremely close to pulling even further ahead, but the puck just hit the post and Tucson was spared. The Roadrunners weren’t giving up quite yet when Cameron Hebig found the opening sport in the Canucks to once again even the score at 2. Shortly after that, Hunter Drew squeezed one through for his second of the night, to give the Roadrunners their first lead of the night. With a last-minute effort to force overtime, Šilovs headed to the bench but it was the Roadrunners that capitalized on the empty net, when Andrew Agozzino sent a shot down the ice, that bounced off the post and into the net, to secure the win. The Roadrunners continue their win streak, with a 4-2 win over the Canucks. 

Abbotsford will look to bounce back tomorrow to close out their home stand before the holidays, and before jetting back out on the road.

Abbotsford Canucks fall 4-2 against the Tucson Roadrunners

The Abbotsford Canucks continued their series against the Manitoba Moose this afternoon, following a 3-0 shutout Teddy Bear Toss victory last night.

Nikita Tolopilo started again tonight after being an integral part of last night's victory, and he went up against Kaapo Kahkonen again.

Kicking things off upfront was the trio consisting of Phil Di Giuseppe, Nils Åman, and Linus Karlsson. Aatu Räty rejoined the group today, lining up next to Arshdeep Bains and Jonathan Lekkerimäki, followed by John Stevens, Ty Mueller, and Nate Smith. Chase Wouters centered Ty Glover and Dino Kambeitz to wrap up the offense.  

On the backend, there was no change from last night, with Elias Pettersson and Jett Woo kicking things off. Guillaume Brisebois and Kirill Kudryavtsev stuck together, along with Christian Wolanin and Cole McWard. 

Kicking things off quickly was Dino Kambeitz who caught the lucky bounce from Cole McWard’s initial shot to put it in the back of the Moose’s net just 2 minutes and 22 seconds into the game. Shortly after that, the lone penalty was dealt to the Canucks, but they got to work and successfully killed it off to keep it a one-goal game. Both teams came very close to getting some more, but the goaltenders held strong between the pipes to shut it all down. The Canucks went into the second period ahead by one. 

The Abby Canucks kept it rolling when a quick penalty was called on the Moose. Christian Wolanin made them pay when a quick shot from the blue line found its way to the back of the net to extend the Canucks lead to 2, just 2 minutes and 16 seconds into the game. Twenty seconds later Elias Pettersson was sent to the box, but no worries for the Canucks, because just 30 seconds into their penalty, Chase Wouters intercepted a turnover in the neutral zone and headed down the ice on a breakaway. With no one in his way and some fancy stick work, the captain netted their 3 goal of the game shorthanded! Similarly to the first period, the goaltenders fended off everything else for the rest of the period, and Abbotsford held a 3-0 lead going into the final frame. 

Keeping on pace with the rest of the game, the Canucks had to get another quick one. This time, it was Aatu Räty who got his stick on Kirill Kudryavtsev’s shot to ensure the puck would be directed into the net. This goal came as their fourth goal of the game. With Nikita Tolopilo minutes away from recording his third shutout of the year, the Canucks were doing everything they could to make it happen. With the team throwing their bodies on the line, they secured the sweep against Manitoba keeping them scoreless over two games. Nikita Tolopilo became the first goaltender in Abby Canucks franchise history to secure 2 straight back-to-back shutouts. 

The Abbotsford Canucks will look to keep rolling into next weekend when they prepare to take on the Tucson Roadrunners for their final two home games before the Christmas break.

THE CANUCKS RECORD BACK TO BACK SHUTOUTS AGAINST THE MANITOBA MOOSE

The Abbotsford Canucks continued their holiday homestand tonight against the Manitoba Moose for their first matchup of the season. Tonight’s game was a special one, as the Canucks held their 4th annual Teddy Bear Toss, where all the bears will be donated to the Archway Christmas Bureau. 

Nikita Tolopilo started tonight in his second Teddy Bear Toss game, securing the win against Laval last season. He will go head-to-head against Kaapo Kahkonen.

After a week off to rest and practice, the Canucks had fresh legs coming into tonight’s game. The first line remained untouched with Tristen Nielsen, Nils Åman, and Linus Karlsson going strong. Phil Di Giuseppe returned to the lineup after being out with an injury for the last while, and he lined up next to Ty Mueller, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Nate Smith centered Chase Wouters and John Stevens, and Cooper Walker drew back into the lineup between Dino Kambeitz and Ty Glover. 

At the backend, Elias Pettersson and Jett Woo kicked things off. Guillaume Brisebois and Kirill Kudryavtsev stuck together, and Christian Wolanin and Cole McWard closed out a perfectly curated Abby Canucks Teddy Bear Toss lineup. 

With the looming Teddy Bear Toss over their shoulders, the pressure was on to set them free. Tristen Nielsen came close to holding this year’s title when he found himself on the breakaway but the shot went just wild. Ultimately, Jett Woo released the bears just under 10 minutes into the game when he stick handled his way through the 5-hole! Fans began launching their bears onto the ice in celebration, and the cleanup crew made its way out. Jett Woo gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead and despite a power play opportunity and some great chances nothing else found its way through and he held the lone goal in the first period. 

The second period was another quiet with the Abby Canucks looking to extend their lead. The lone power play was dealt to Canucks once again just 3 minutes into the game, but the pucks didn’t find the right spot. With a scoreless second period looming, Jett Woo ripped a shot from the blue line that found Linus Karlsson in front of the net at just the right angle, where he was able to deflect it in for the lone goal this period. Despite outshooting the Moose 11-4 this period, Karlsson was the only lucky one, and the Canucks would start the third period up by 2! 

Looking to close out the game with a win, Linus Karlsson came up big scoring his second of the game just 4 minutes in! A backdoor feed from Nils Åman set Karlsson up perfectly to secure his second of the game and extend the Canucks lead to 3. The Canucks did a great job of shutting down all of Manitoba’s chances, holding them to just 15 total shots the entire game. Nikita Tolopilo stopped all of them to record his second career shutout and the Canucks secured a 3-0 shutout victory to close out their Teddy Bear Toss game! 

They will rematch tomorrow and look for their 8th win in 10 games! The team will then take a few days to practice before taking on the Tucson Roadrunners for their final two games before the Christmas break!

THE CANUCKS SHUTOUT THE MOOSE IN A TEDDY BEAR TOSS VICTORY 

The Abbotsford Canucks opened the month of December with a pair of big wins on home ice and are looking forward to a busy month at home at the Abbotsford Centre.

With four home games over the coming two weekends, the Canucks are feeling good about the extra practice time that they will receive and are beginning to play the way they want.

Head Coach Manny Malhotra is pleased with his group’s commitment to playing to the team’s structure over their last half dozen games. The team went 4-2-0 on a road trip that began in the middle of November. From there, they outscored the Colorado Eagles 11-3 through a pair of wins on home ice.

“It always comes back to the same principles,” said Malhotra. “Holding structure allows us to play a much faster game and the most important piece is the work that the guys put in.”

The head coach spoke about how he has been happy with the past couple of weeks of practice and how his team has taken advantage of the extra ice time between games. One of the things that Malhotra is most pleased with has been his group's commitment to being one of the best-conditioned teams in the AHL.

“Guys have to be moving out there but pace with a purpose and their execution with the puck allows us to play fast. Our practices consist of a lot of high-paced drills. The guys are getting a lot of confrontations that they need and the defensive zone coverage is improving from the work we do in those drills.”

Malhotra liked how his group was committed to competing in practice and is trying to teach the players how important those practice habits are because they directly translate to how they play in games.

Abbotsford Captain Chase Wouters gives credit to his group's recent success from their buy-in to being process-driven.

“Manny has touched on that recently as we put in the work throughout the week, and it feels like everything is falling into place on the weekends. We’ve been ramping up to it and always looking forward to the games after the work we put in during the week,” said Wouters.

With a new coaching staff, the team has taken some time to become fully aligned and be on the same page between the staff and the players. Wouters believes their last road trip felt like a turning point in the room and with two more weekends before the Christmas break, the team feels confident in their progress.

“We are all connected, and I think that’s the main thing,” said Wouters. “We know where everyone is on the ice, and we know our structure and plan. We know who is going back for pucks, and who needs to be where on the forecheck. These are the types of things we have been working on in the video room as well as on the ice in practice. Though we are working through getting to know a new staff, it’s all been coming together lately, and it’s been good to see. There is still a lot of work to be done but we are excited for it.”

First-round pick of the 2023 draft, Jonathan Lekkerimäki is leading the Canucks with 14 points this season. He also leads the team with 10 goals. Wouters, John Stevens, Tristen Nielsen, and Cole McWard have played in all 23 games this season.

Artūrs Šilovs is 2-0-0 and has a 0.929% save percentage along with a 1.51 goals-against average. Nikita Tolopilo leads the goalies with 11 games played and Ty Young is back down to the ECHL for now but has played in five games as a 20-year-old netminder.

Young defencemen Elias Pettersson and Kirill Kudryavtsev have begun turning heads in the AHL. Each of the 20-year-olds has played in 20+ games this season and Pettersson is coming off a huge weekend that saw him play strong defensively while also having the first three-point night of his AHL career.

Kudryavtsev is showing that he can play both the left and right side on defence and is seeing some time on the Canucks’ power play unit. He is leading Abbotsford in points from a defenceman with 12 (2g-10a) in 20 games and the former seventh-round pick is tied for fourth points from a U21 defenceman in the AHL.

The Abbotsford Canucks have their annual Teddy Bear Toss night on Saturday, December 14th and all the toys will be donated to Archway Christmas Bureau.

Last year, captain Wouters scored to send the bears flying and he is hoping to do the same again this season but will happily see one of his teammates bring the bears to the ice.

Malhotra is excited about Saturday due to the fact that it will be his first time experiencing a Teddy Bear Toss in person.

“I’ve never been a part of one,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of clips online but I’m looking forward to experiencing it live on Saturday.”

Abbotsford Canucks are Turning the Corner as Home-Heavy December Continues

**ABBOTSFORD, BC** – The Abbotsford Canucks are gearing up for this year’s highly anticipated Teddy Bear Toss game, presented by Save-On-Foods, taking place on December 14 against the Manitoba Moose. Fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used teddy bears to the game and join the heartwarming tradition of tossing their teddies onto the ice after Abbotsford scores their first goal. 

All teddy bears and stuffed animals tossed onto the ice after the team’s first goal will be donated to the Archway Christmas Bureau, to support local families in need this holiday season. 

To complement the cuddly teddies, we encourage fans to come dressed in their coziest pyjamas and enjoy a fun, festive evening with us! 

What to expect on this cozy evening: 

- Visit the Archway Christmas Bureau at the Community Corner at Section 116 to learn more about their impactful work and how you can get involved. 

- Fans can purchase teddy bears and stuffed animals at Section 101, with partial proceeds benefiting the local Air Cadet Squadron Sponsoring Committee. 

- Visit Save-On-Foods at Section 101 and take a spin at the prize wheel for your chance to win great prizes!

The Abbotsford Canucks were fresh off a win last night and looked to do it again today to sweep the series.

Artūrs Šilovs returned to the Abbotsford Canucks this morning, and he would start in his second game of the year with the team tonight, taking on Kevin Mandolese.

After a big game last night, securing 2 goals and an assist, he continued to line up next to Nils Åman and Tristen Nielsen. Arshdeep Bains and Jonathan Lekkerimäki bookended Ty Mueller after their line was on fire as well last night. Carsen Twarynski slotted back in next to John Stevens and Chase Wouters, and Nate Smith centered Ty Glover and Dino Kambeitz to keep it the same as yesterday.

On the backend, a few changes, as Elias Pettersson paired up with Jett Woo tonight, and Guillaume Brisebois slotted in next to Kirill Kudryavtsev. Christian Wolanin and Cole McWard remained a duo to complete the Canucks lineup tonight.  

Another quick start to the game tonight, with Christian Wolanin securing the first goal of the game just a minute and twenty seconds into the game. On an early powerplay, Christian Wolanin netted the puck off a shot from the blue line to give the Abby Canucks an early 1-0 lead. A minute and a half later, a feed from Linus Karlsson to Nils Åman, lead to the Canucks second goal of the game, after Åman jammed it home from the doorstep. The Canucks were up 2-0 under 3 minutes into the game. Just like last night, the Eagles wouldn’t go into the second scoreless, so a late goal from Mark Senden, cut the Abby Canucks lead in half, and they would head back to the dressing room down 2-1.

Things settled down a bit in the second period. Trent Miner replaced Kevin Mandolese to start things off for the Eagles. The Canucks started out on the kill but successfully made it through without allowing any goals in. A few more penalties were exchanged, and a couple of close chances for each team but neither was able to score. It wasn’t until about fifteen minutes into the period when Ty Mueller and Jonathan Lekkerimäki headed down a two-on-one where Jonathan Lekkerimäki was able to net his first of the game. After the initial shot from Mueller bounced off a stick, Lekkerimäki scooped it up and dumped it in the back of the Eagles net to extend the Canucks lead to 2. A late high-sticking major to the Eagles, meant Colorado would head into the third period down 3-1, and on the kill. 

The Abby Canucks had themselves another big period, looking to close out the game with a win! Despite a scoreless first 9 minutes, Nate Smith came up big and snuck onto the doorstep, jamming home the puck on the powerplay to give the Canucks a 3-goal lead just before the halfway point. A few minutes later, Jonathan Lekkerimäki buried home the rebound to give the Canucks their 5th goal of the game. On a delayed call penalty call to the Eagles, Šilovs headed to the bench for an extra attacker, but the puck found the back of the Canucks empty net anyways to give the Eagles their 2nd of the game. Despite that, the Canucks still came up big with a 5-2 win over the Colorado Eagles to sweep the weekend series.

Abbotsford will continue their homestand next weekend against the Manitoba Moose for their Teddy Bear Toss game, and the following weekend with their Ugly Christmas Sweater Night!

THE ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS SWEEPED THE WEEKEND SERIES AGAINST THE EAGLES WITH A 5-2 WIN TONIGHT

The Abbotsford Canucks returned home from a 6-game road trip, taking on the Colorado Eagles for the first time at home this season.

Ty Young was back between the pipes tonight, going up against Trent Miner.

Linus Karlsson returned to the lineup after being out with an injury, causing him to missm most of the season. He lined up next to Nils Åman and Tristen Nielsen. Arshdeep Bains and Jonathan Lekkerimäki bookended Ty Mueller, followed by John Stevens, Chase Wouters, and Danila Klimovich. Nate Smith centered Ty Glover and Dino Kambeitz to round out the Canucks offence. 

On the backend, Kirill Kudryavtsev paired up with Jett Woo, and Elias Petterson lined up next to Christian Felton. Christian Wolanin and Cole McWard strong armed the defense, to close out the lineup for Rock ‘N Roll night! 

Tonight’s game got off to a rapid start, when Linus Karlsson marked his return to the game, after scoring the first goal just 12 seconds in. Grabbing the rebound after Tristen Nielsen’s shot, Karlsson gave the Canucks an early 1-0 lead. Just a minute and a half later, Jonathan Lekkerimäki found himself on the breakaway, deked Miner, and secured his 7th of the season to put the Canucks up 2-0. A few minutes later Chase Wouters dropped the gloves with Tye Felhaber, giving fans another reason to get loud. After successfully killing off a penalty, the Canucks went on to dominate the period. It was Jonathan Lekkerimäki who passed in front to Arshdeep Bains, who went on to score the Canucks third goal of the game. The Eagles were able to respond before the end of the period, when Tye Felhaber snuck one past Ty Young to give them a goal and cut the Canucks lead to 2 before heading back to the room. 

A quieter second period, with the shot clock staying low. The Canucks battled through adversity, killing off the only 4 penalties this period, and not allowing the Eagles to get another past Young. Despite only registering 2 shots themselves, Dino Kambeitz was able to light the lamp to restore the Canucks' three-goal lead and secure the only goal of the period. The Canucks headed into the final frame ahead, 4-1. 

Looking to secure the win, the Canucks first had to kill off a few penalties.  After doing so successfully, the Canucks tried their hand at a powerplay of their own. Just after the halfway mark, Linus Karlsson doubled down, securing his second of the game on the powerplay, giving them a 4 goal lead. Arshdeep Bains' assist on Karlsson's secured him his 100th AHL career point! Just a few minutes later, Jonathan Lekkerimäki also snuck another one past Miner to grab his second of the game, as well as the team's 6th goal of the game. 

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their 6-game homestand with a massive win, defeating the Colorado Eagles 6-1. The teams will go at it against the Eagles tomorrow afternoon for Next Gen Sunday. The Canucks will then pick up again next weekend against the Manitoba Moose, playing their Teddy Bear Toss game on Saturday!

**A look at the highlights from the first half of the season**

We kicked off the season with a two-day home opener celebration where fans saw live entertainment, exciting activations, free snacks, and discounted beer for a lively celebration to get the team riled up for the season.  
  
Abbotsford Centre came alive in the first half of the season, creating memorable moments for the players and fans by celebrating culture and supporting important causes through dedicated theme nights such as Diwali Night, Country Night, and Hockey Fights Cancer Night. We’re looking forward to seeing the energy our fans will continue to bring to the ice during the second half of our Community & Fan Engagement Nights!   

The second half of the season still includes Friday Night Live each Friday home game with South Rise Social, consisting of discounted beer and live music, as well as Next Gen Sundays, where we will welcome the next generation of Abbotsford Canucks and hockey fans! Each Sunday home game will begin at 4:00pm PT, perfect for the whole family!

The Abbotsford Canucks rematched the San Jose Barracuda, following a 5-3 loss last night, for their final game of the road trip.

Switching things up in the net, saw Nikita Tolopilo get the start for Canucks tonight, against Gabriel Carriere.

The Canucks first and second lines remained identical to last night, with Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Nils Åman with Tristen Nielsen. Ty Mueller continued to center Arshdeep Bains and Danila Klimovich. Ty Glover moved up a spot, winging Nate Smith, alongside Dino Kambeitz who had his first multi-goal AHL game last night. Ben Berard made his Abbotsford debut tonight, lining up next to captain Chase Wouters and John Stevens to round out the offense. 

Elias Pettersson continued defending with Cole McWard to kick things off. Christian Wolanin and Christian Felton stuck together once again, and Layton Ahac slotted back into the lineup next to Kirill Kudryavtsev to strong-arm the defensive group. 

A quick start to the game, going in favour of the Barracuda. An early penalty call to Arshdeep Bains, meant San Jose would head to the powerplay just under 4 minutes into the game. Luca Cagnoni cashed in on the advantage just 30 seconds in, to give the Barracuda a 1-0 lead. 30 seconds later, Donovan Houle scored off a seemingly harmless shot, to extend their lead to 2. The Canucks were able to cool them down, preventing any more goals before the end of the period, but were unable to secure any themselves. Abbotsford was in a 2 goal deficit heading into the second period. 

The next twenty minutes started with an uno reverso, this time going in favour of the Canucks. Just one minute in, Elias Pettersson intercepted and created a turnover, sending a long pass down the ice for Tristen Nielsen, who scored the Canucks first goal of the game on the breakaway. Just seventy seconds after that, John Stevens and Ben Berard found themselves on a 2-on-1, where Stevens set up Berard to score his first goal as an Abby Canuck. The game was now tied, just two minutes and ten seconds into the second period. Unfortunately, a few minutes later, the Canucks were caught trying to kill another penalty, but once again Luca Cagnoni was able to capitalize, after a shot from the top of the zone went straight to the back of Abbotsford’s net, to regain their lead, 3-2. Looking to respond, Danila Klimovich capitalized on a San Jose giveaway, going top shelf on Carriere, to tie the game up at 3 once again, halfway through the period. With just over a minute and a half to go, the Barracuda found themselves on yet another powerplay, this time, Andrew Poturalski took a shot from the right circle to restore the lead, 4-3. With 0.4 seconds left on the clock, Colin White was able to sneak one past Tolopilo for the buzzer-beater, and the Barracuda had their 2-goal lead restored, heading into the final frame. 

The third period, once again, saw action quickly, back in favour of San Jose. After creating a turnover, Thomas Bordeleau secured some more insurance, netting their 6th goal of the game, extending the Barracuda’s lead to 3. The Canucks headed to the powerplay and registered some grade-A chances, but Carriere stooped them all. Coming down to the wire, the Canucks secured another powerplay, and just two seconds after it expired, Tristen Nielsen ripped a shot on net from the right circle to secure his second of the game, bringing the Canucks within 2. Unfortunately, a late penalty to the Canucks, and a last-ditch effort to regain even strength, didn’t go as planned and Justin Bailey netted the empty net goal once again to secure the victory for the Barracuda. 

San Jose sweeped the back-to-back in a 7-4 win over the Canucks, concluding their 6-game road trip. The Canucks went 4-2-0 this road trip and will return home for a holiday frenzy, playing their Teddy Bear Toss, Ugly Sweater Night, and many more.

The Abbotsford Canucks were looking for their 5th straight win, taking this road trip by storm, as they faced the San Jose Barracuda for the first time this season. 

Ty Young started in net for the Canucks today, after having a 2 game break, and he took on Yaroslav Askarov.

The Canucks didn’t change their first line, continuing to have Jonathan Lekkerimäki wing Nils Åman with Tristen Nielsen. They also had the addition of Arshdeep Bains rejoin the team tonight, and he lined up next to Ty Mueller and Danila Klimovich. John Stevens moved up to bookend Chase Wouters with Carsen Twarynski, and Nate Smith shifted to center Ty Glover and Dino Kambeitz.

Going with different defensive pairing as well, Elias Pettersson teamed up with Cole McWard to kick things off. Kirill Kudryavtsev lined next to Akito Hirose, and Christian Wolanin and Christian Felton slotted into the lineup tonight to strong-arm the backend. 
Abbotsford kicked off the first few minutes strong, using their possession of the puck to generate some shots on net. A quick penalty call to the Barracuda meant the Canucks would head to the powerplay first, but San Jose successfully killed it off.  It ended up being Lucas Vanroboys who took a sneaky shot on Ty Young that went top left corner, to give the Barracuda a 1-0 lead. They continued to register a bunch of chances, but with 52 seconds left to play in the first period, another shot by Luca Vanroboys squeezed through Ty Young's legs to give the Cuda a 2-0 lead, heading into the second period. 

The Canucks looked to get on the board and build momentum, but a tripping call to Ty Mueller meant they would be down a man just a minute into the period. Although killing that off, Justin Bailey would be the one to score first, giving the Barracuda a 3-0 lead. Chase Wouters dropped the gloves with Anthony Vincent shortly after, hoping it would spark something in his team. As he sat in the box, the Canucks offense came to life, just as he hoped. Elias Pettersson scored his first career AHL goal, with a beautiful shot from the blue line, going right past Akvarov, before he could even see it. Three minutes after that, Dino Kambeitz stickhandled across the ice and fired the puck straight to the back of the Barracuda's net to bring them within one. 

Once again, the Canucks found themselves on the kill early on in the final frame. This time, during what the Barracuda thought would be a reset in their zone, Dino Kambeitz came in hot, colliding with Shakir Mukhamadullin, turning around and firing the puck on net. Dino’s second goal of the game came short-handed and tied it up at 3, giving the Canucks life. Looking for the tiebreaker, Ty Young came up with some big saves to keep the Canucks momentum rolling, but it was ultimately Scott Sabourin who would get the go-ahead goal for the Barracuda with 5 minutes left. The Canucks pulled their goalie in exchange for an extra attacker. Coming so close, an unlucky bounce saw Justin Bailey and Filip Bystedt head down the ice and secure the empty netter, giving them a 2 goal lead. 

The Canucks drop this one 5-3, snapping their win streak, but will rematch the Barracuda tomorrow night, for their final game of the road trip before heading home.

Despite erasing a 3 goal deficit, the Abbotsford Canucks couldn't get it done and the Barracuda snap the win streak, defeating them 5-3.

The Abbotsford Canucks were hot off a 3-game win streak and returned to Bakersfield for another one-off game against the Condors. 

Nikita Tolopilo got the nod in net tonight after registering his first career AHL shutout on Saturday against the Henderson Silver Knights. He went head-to-head with Colin Delia at the Condors' end. 

Sticking to what’s been working, the Canucks went with an identical offensive lineup tonight. Jonathan Lekkerimäki stuck to winging Nils Åman with Tristen Nielsen, and Ty Mueller continued to center Carsen Twarynski and Danila Klimovich. Nate Smith, Chase Wouters, and Dino Kambeitz stuck together, and Ty Glover and Cooper Walker continued the streak of bookending John Stevens. 

A slight change to the defense, with Elias Pettersson and Mark Friedman kicking things off. Kirill Kudryavtsev and Jett Woo stuck together, but Akito Hirose slotted back in tonight alongside Cole McWard to round out the lineup. 

Neither team was able to crack the scoresheet this frame despite some close calls. The Condors had some grade-A chances, outshooting the Canucks but Nikita Tolopilo stood on his head, stopping them all. Despite a chance on the powerplay, the Canucks couldn’t light the lamp, and the game was scoreless heading into the second period. 

The Condors came out strong in the second, holding the Canucks to just 1 shot on net in the first half. Tolopilo continued to do a great job at holding the game even, and despite not generating any shots, the Canucks were throwing bodies on the line and playing great defense. It wasn’t until a hooking call was dealt to the Condors, that Danila Klimovich was able to rip one from the right circle to break the deadlock. With the powerplay working in their favour, Klimovich’s goal gave the Canucks the first lead of the game. Just a minute after that, the Condors were down a man once again after an interference call, and the Canucks powerplay went back to work.  Ty Mueller was gifted the wide-open net, with no one in his way, and a shot to the back of the net, meant the Canucks would be up 2-0 heading into the final frame. 

Looking to keep their lead, their momentum was spoiled early into the third when Noel Hoefenmayer got a shot from the blue line that just sneaked past Tolopilo. This goal came right after an unreal save but unfortunately brought the Condors within one. Bakersfield kept up the pressure, coming really close to tying it, but as time was expiring, they decided to pull Delia from the net. A shot on the empty net from Klimovich hit the post, and the Condors were spared for a little bit, but with just a few seconds remaining before the buzzer, Nils Åman skated down the ice with the puck, to net the empty netter with 4 seconds left in the game, securing the Canucks win.

The Canucks took this one 3-1, sweeping this road series with Bakersfield, for their fourth straight win. Nikita Tolopilo also stopped 62 of his last 63 shots, standing on his head to help bring the Canucks to victory twice in a row. They will head to San Jose to take on the Barracuda for the first time this season, and their final test on the road before enjoying a holiday homestand in December.

The Canucks notch their 4th straight victory in a 3-1 win over the Bakersfield Condors. 

The Canucks beat the Bakersfield Condors 3-1 for their 4th straight victory 

The Abbotsford Canucks went head-to-head with Henderson Silver Knights again tonight after a massive offensive victory yesterday.  

Changes to the goaltenders on both ends of the ice, Nikita Tolopilo started in net for the Canucks, taking on Akira Schmid for the Silver Knights. 

It appeared to be an otherwise identical roster for the Canucks tonight, with Jonathan Lekkerimäki lining up next to Tristen Nielsen and Nils Åman. Ty Mueller continued to center Carsen Twarynski and Danila Klimovich, followed by Nate Smith, Chase Wouters, and Dino Kambeitz. Ty Glover and Cooper Walker bookended John Stevens once again, to round out the offence. 

The same defensive pairings also saw Guillaume Brisebois and Cole McWard together, followed by Kirill Kudryavtsev and Jett Woo, and Elias Pettersson with Mark Friedman. 

Not much action in the first period other than a pair of penalties dealt to each team. The Canucks did a great job at limiting the Silver Knights chances, holding them to just five shots on net, but despite outshooting them, they were unable to capitalize this period themselves. The teams would head back to the room scoreless. 

Heading into the next 20 minutes, both teams were looking to get on the scoreboard first. The Canucks doing a great job once again at limiting the Silver Knights's chances, holding them to just another five shots this period. Henderson also got called for a few penalties before the halfway mark, meaning they would be down a man for 4 minutes out of the first 10. An unbelievable play from Jonathan Lekkerimäki in the neutral zone would lead to the Canucks first goal of the game. Lekkerimäki pickpocketed Brendan Brisson mid-ice and headed on a breakaway the other direction, stick-handling his way to the first goal of the game. Another penalty to the Silver Knights would foreshadow their deficit growing larger when Tristen Nielsen would quickly shoot the puck to the back of their net, giving the Canucks a 2-0 lead heading into the third period. 

Tensions rose, sticks were held, and six penalties were dealt in the final frame. The Canucks on the man advantage for most of it, couldn’t muster up another goal before the end of the game. With the time running out, the Silver Knights hoped to get on the board, so they pulled their goalie for the man advantage late in the third. Unfortunately, a last-minute penalty meant they would be out a goaltender, playing 5 on 5 hockey. Nikita Tolopilo was able to hold on until the buzzer sounded and secured his first AHL Career Shutout! 

The Canucks took this one 2-0, to sweep this series against Henderson for their third straight win on the road. They will return to Bakersfield on Tuesday, before heading to San Jose to close out their six-game road trip.

The Canucks shut out the Henderson Silver Knights in a 2-0 victory

The Abbotsford Canucks continued their road trip, kicking off game two, and their first matchup against the Henderson Silver Knights this season. 

Ty Young got his third consecutive start for the Canucks, taking on Jesper Vikman at the opposing end. 

Jonathan Lekkerimäki rejoined the group down in Henderson after playing in his first NHL games and notching his first NHL goal with the big club. He lined up next to Tristen Nielsen and Nils Åman tonight. Ty Mueller centered Carsen Twarynski and Danila Klimovich, followed by Nate Smith, Chase Wouters, and Dino Kambeitz. The final forwards remain unchanged from the last few games, consisting of Ty Glover, John Stevens, and Cooper Walker. 

A mix-up to the blue liners, as Guillaume Brisebois and Cole McWard paired up, followed by Kirill Kudryavtsev and Jett Woo. Elias Pettersson drew back into the lineup following his stint with the big club and lined up next to Mark Friedman, who also returned tonight after an injury a few weeks back. 

The first period was a big one, despite starting in the hands of the Silver Knights. Henderson looked strong for the first few minutes, registering a few chances on net, but a shot from Tristen Nielsen created a shift in momentum. Nielsen ripped one from the left-wing boards, going straight into the Silver Knight’s net for his second of the season, putting the Canucks up 1-0, halfway through the first. Just 2 minutes later, a penalty called on Henderson, left room for Ty Mueller to rip one top shelf, to extend the Canucks lead by 2. A few minutes later, Riley McKay would be the one to cut the lead in half when he snuck one past Ty Young. Nothing to fret over for Canucks fans, because Captain Chase Wouters answered right back, capitalizing on the powerplay, scoring the Canucks third goal of the game. Abbotsford would head to the dressing room, up 3-1, outshooting the Silver Knights 17-17 after the first twenty minutes of play.
 
The second period saw even more explosion for the Canucks offense. Just under halfway through the period, John Stevens and Ty Glover found themselves on a two-on-one, where Stevens would pass across for Glover, and he would seal the deal, making it 4-1 Canucks. If one wasn’t good enough, after intercepting a turnover in the Canucks end, Jett Woo and John Stevens headed down the ice on another 2 on 1, this time, John Stevens being the one to light the lamp for the Canucks. Stevens notched his third of the season, putting the Silver Knights in a 4 goal deficit. The fun didn’t stop there, because two minutes later, Cole McWard set up Danila Klimovich, who was all alone in front of the net, and deflected the shot to put the Canucks up 6-1. Henderson was unable to respond in the second period, leaving the Canucks with a big lead before the final frame. 

Going into the final period, the Canucks had the upper hand. Looking to keep the trend going, Kirill Kudryavtsev added one more to the tally, sneaking one through, making it 7-1. Henderson was able to prevent any more goals from coming through, but they could not tally any themselves.

The Abbotsford Canucks take their first game against the Henderson Silver Knights, 7-1.

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their 6 game road trip in California with a game against the Bakersfield Condors for a midweek matinee game. The last time these two teams met, they split the series, each walking away with a win. 

Ty Young got the start once again, after his AHL debut against the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Saturday, and he took on Olivier Rodrigue at the other end. 

After a transaction with Vancouver prior to the game, the Abbotsford lines shifted once again, with Ty Mueller, Max Sasson, and Danila Klimovich kicking things off. Nils Åman centered Carsen Twarynski and Tristen Nielsen, and Dino Kambeitz drew back into the lineup, alongside Nate Smith and Chase Wouters. Ty Glover, John Stevens, and Cooper Walker stuck together, after putting up points in their last few games. 

On defence, Akito Hirose and Jett Woo paired up, followed by Guillaume Brisebois and Christian Felton. Kirill Kudryavtsev and Cole McWard rounded things out on the back end to complete the Canucks lineup this morning.

The rivalry between the two teams was evident today when a fight broke out less than two minutes into the game. A couple of penalties were exchanged between the two teams after that, but it was ultimately Max Sasson who capitalized when he backhanded the rebound into Bakersfield's net to notch the first goal of the game, getting the Canucks on the board first. The Condors were unable to respond in the first 20 minutes, and Abbotsford held the lead through to the second.

A quick start to the second period, saw Abbotsford extending their lead early on. A quick rip from Danila Klimovich went straight to the back of the Condors' net before Olivier Rodrigue had a chance to stop it. Abbotsford now had a 2-goal lead. It was scoreless for the next 10 mins, until former Abbotsford Canuck Alex Kannok Leipert, netted his first of the season with a long shot from the blue line, and the Condors were on the board. It didn’t take long before the Canucks would respond when a one-timer from the blue line made its way to the back of the net thanks to Cole McWard. Abbotsford restored their 2-goal lead and would head into the final frame up 3-1. 

Looking for some more insurance, the Canucks drew up the perfect tic-tac-toe situation to extend their lead 4-1. Tristen Nielsen passed across to Nils Åman, who passed back for Carsen Twarynski to net their fourth goal of the game! Four minutes later, however, Phil Kemp secured his Gordie Howe Hat Trick after scoring on Ty Young, cutting the Canucks lead in half once again. With time running out, the Condors pulled their netminder with the hope of getting them back into the game, but Ty Young stopped all remaining shots to secure his first AHL win!

The Canucks take game one of their road trip with a 4-2 victory over the Bakersfield Condors. Abbotsford will head to Henderson next for their first meet of the season, before going back to Bakersfield for another stand-alone game.

The Abbotsford Canucks pick up a 4-2 victory against the Bakersfield Condors on their first stop of the road trip

Tonight, the Abbotsford Canucks rematched the Coachella Valley Firebirds and looked to split the series 1-1. The two teams continue to sit beside each other in the standings, so another even matchup was to be expected.

Ty Young got the go-ahead tonight, starting between the crease for the Canucks for his AHL debut. He would face off against the Ales Steza. 

Switching up the lines from last night, Max Sasson and Danila Klimovich joined Arshdeep Bains on the first line, followed by the new line of Ty Mueller, Nils Åman, and Tristen Nielsen. Carsen Twarynski and Nate Smith continued to bookend Chase Wouters, and John Stevens, Ty Glover, and Cooper Walker remained a trio to solidify the offence.

At the blue line, Elias Pettersson joined Jett Woo, and Kirill Kudryavtsev slotted back in next to Cole Mcward. Guillaume Brisebois and Christian Felton stuck together to round out the Canucks lineup. 

The first period got off to a quick start, with Abbotsford netting the first goal. Just under 3 minutes in, Cooper Walker passed the puck ahead to Ty Glover who, with speed and finesse, backhanded the puck right into the Firebirds' net, to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. The Canucks headed to the powerplay shortly after, and which a bunch of close calls, Ales Steza stayed sharp denying Abbotsford some insurance. Instead, a few minutes later, it was Luke Henman who would find himself on the scoresheet to tie the game up at 1, after getting the puck past Young. Abbotsford successfully killed off a penalty, but after getting back to even strength, Max McCormick would be the one to score, giving the Firebirds a lead heading into the second. 

The second period was another big one, but this time in favour of the Canucks. Edward Sale got his goal fixing, just one minute into the period, to extend the Firebirds' lead to 2 goals to kick off the period. Although down, the Canucks were not out, because just two minutes later, Cooper Walker stashed the rebound into Coachella’s net, to bring them within one. Continuing this stretch, the Canucks offence exploded registering shot after shot on net, but Ales Stezka denied them all. After 14 minutes, Chase Wouters took a long shot from the blue line, that tipped off of Nate Smith’s stick to tie the game up at 3. This goal came as Nate Smith’s first goal as a Canuck, and ensured the Canucks would not be down heading into the final frame. 

The teams would look to battle to come out ahead in the third period. Coachella outshot Abbotsford, after being the only team to have the man advantage. The Canucks had a great attempt at killing the penalties, coming close to a short-handed goal themselves, but with 36 seconds left in the game, Cale Fleury was the one who ultimately found the back of the net to secure the victory and come out on top. The Canucks pulled the goalie but the time ran out before they could equalize. 

Despite coming back from a 3-1 deficit, the Canucks dropped this game 4-3. Abbotsford will hit the road for a 6 game road trip in California, before returning home to a holiday frenzy at the Abbotsford Centre.

Despite coming back from a 3-1 deficit, the Canucks couldn't complete the comeback after a late powerplay goal from the Firebirds.

The Canucks dropped their second game against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, 4-3.

Tonight, the Abbotsford Canucks took on the Coachella Valley Firebirds for their Hockey Fights Cancer night. This was the first meeting between the two teams, who are currently sitting back to back on the leaderboard. 

Nikita Tolopilo will get the start once again tonight, taking on Nikke Kokko down at the Firebird’s end. 

The Canucks chose to go with an otherwise identical roster from last Sunday’s game against the Condors. Arshdeep Bains and Nils Åman lined up alongside Tristen Nielsen. Ty Mueller continued to Max Sasson with Danila Klimovich, followed by Carsen Twarynski, Chase Wouters, and Nate Smith. John Stevens centered Ty Glover and Cooper Walker, to close out the offensive team. 

On the backend, Akito Hirose once again paired up with Jett Woo, with Elias Petterson and Cole McWard on their tail, and Guillaume Brisebois and Christian Felton stuck together to complete the Canucks fighters for the night.  

It was a pretty even first half of the period, with not much happening. There was a penalty to each team in the first 12 minutes, but neither could capitalize. It wasn’t until 16:05 when Guillaume Brisebois ripped a shot from the blue line, breezing right past Nikke Kokko, to give the Abby Canucks a lead and the first goal of the game. This came as Brisebois' first of the season as well. It didn’t take long for Coachella to respond, because just two and a half minutes later, Jani Nyman squeaked one past Tolopilo to tie up the game at 1 heading into the second. 

Once again, the second period didn’t see too much action. A few penalties were exchanged between the two teams, and some great chances on both ends, but ultimately, neither team was able to capitalize. The score remained 1-1 going into the final frame, forcing a battle in the third. 

The Firebirds were quick to get the lead, as just under 2 minutes into the third, Max Lajoie was able to get one to the back of the Canucks net, to put them up 2-1. The Canucks got were forced to kill a bunch of penalties, leaving them down a man for a few minutes. Some close shots but nothing found the back of the net. With a few minutes to go, Tolopilo returned to the bench to allow for an extra attacker, in their attempt to force an overtime. Unfortunately, it was Max McCormick who secured some insurance netting the empty net goal to give them a 2 goal lead. Just 30 seconds later, Ryan Winterton sent a long shot down the ice, that landed right in the Canucks empty net once again, and the Firebirds were up 4-1. 

Despite getting on the board first, the Canucks could not close it out and dropped game one against the Firebirds, 4-1. They will rematch tomorrow night for their inaugural Movember Night, before hitting the road for their 6-game stint in California once again.

The Canucks drop their first game against the Coachella Valley Firebirds 4-1

The Abbotsford Canucks rematched against the Bakersfield Condors tonight after dropping yesterday’s game 3-1. 

Artūrs Šilovs got the call to start in net for Abbotsford tonight, facing off against Colli Delia for his 2024/25 AHL debut. 

After getting some reinforcement from Vancouver Arshdeep Bains and Nils Åman returned to the Abbotsford lineup and made their home-ice debut this season alongside Tristen Nielsen. Ty Mueller winged Max Sasson with Danila Klimovich, followed by Carsen Twarynski, Chase Wouters, and Nate Smith. John Stevens centered Ty Glover and Cooper Walker, two linemates with points in the last game, to round out the offense. 

On the backend, Akito Hirose paired up with Jett Woo, with Elias Pettersson and Cole McWard on their tail, and Guillaume Brisebois and Christian Felton stuck together to complete the Canucks dressing. 

Looking to strike quickly, the Canucks quickly drew a man advantage. They had some great looks on net, but nothing could get through Delia. It ended up being a very tame period, mostly 5-on-5 hockey, and neither team was able to light the lamp. The Canucks held the Condors to just 4 shots in the first frame and outshot them with 11. A last-second high-sticking call to the Condors meant the Canucks would start the second period on a powerplay. 

The Canucks were the first to strike in the second period when a shot from Jett Woo fired back and Akito Hirose was able to grab it and fire it straight to the back of the net. Akito Hirose netted his first career AHL goal to put the Canucks up 1-0 just 2 minutes into the period. With the helper on this goal, Jett Woo also tallied his 50th career AHL assist. A tripping call to Guillaume Brisebois meant the Condors would get the only powerplay in the second frame. Matthew Savoie would be the one to capitalize after receiving a cross-ice pass from Seth Griffith to tie the game up at 1. The teams would head back to the dressing rooms all squared up.

The final frame would be a battle to break the tie, but a quick penalty call to the Canucks would leave them on a powerplay early on. Danila Klimovich would take advantage of it and send home a rocket just 3 minutes into the period, giving the Canucks a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately, just over a minute later, Drake Caggiula would equalize the game once again and square it up at 2. Just after the halfway point, Max Sasson would spin around with the puck, and Ty Mueller would be there to tip it past the red line, and restore the lead, 3-1. With a few minutes left in the game, the Condors pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, but Jett Woo would be the one to ensure the win and notch the empty net goal. 

The Canucks defeated the Condors 4-2 and successfully split the series to put them back in the win column. 

Abbotsford will spend the week at home before taking on the Coachella Valley Firebirds at the end of the week for Hockey Fights Cancer and Movember Night, before heading on a long road trip down south once again.

THE CANUCKS GET BACK IN THE WIN COLUMN WITH A 4-2 VICTORY OVER THE BAKERSFIELD CONDORS

The Abbotsford Canucks returned home from their 3 game road trip down south, and faced the Bakersfield Condors for the first time this season on Country Night! 

Nikita Tolopilo got the nod in net tonight for the Canucks, taking on Oliver Rodrigue at the other end. 

The Canucks shook up the lineup tonight, with Ty Mueller, Max Sasson, and Danila Klimovich kicking things off offensively. Nate Smith centered Chase Wouters and Tristen Nielsen, followed by Ty Glover, John Stevens, and Carsen Twarynski. Going with an 11 and 7 formation again, Cooper Walker and Dino Kambeitz rounded out the offence. 

On defence, Akito Hirose returned to the lineup, pairing up with Jett Woo, followed by Elias Pettersson and Cole McWard. Christian Felton made his AHL debut tonight alongside veteran Guillaume Brisebois, and Kirill Kudryavtsev solidified things at the blue line. 

It was a slow first period to start the game, with each team limiting their opponents’ shots. The Condors held the Canucks to just 3 shots, and Canucks held Bakersfield to 5. The Canucks were also able to kill off a 5-on-3, to keep the game scoreless. It wasn’t until 18 minutes into the period that the Condors were able to strike first as Cameron Wright put them up 1-0 to head back to the dressing room. 

Heading into the second, frame the Canucks looked to get on the board. The first half of the period was another quiet one, with few penalties or shots on goal. Once again, it was the Condors that got on the board first. Drake Caggiula ripped one to the back of the Canucks net to extend their lead to 2-0. Looking for a quick response Jett Woo created a turnover play where Ty Glover headed down the stretch and put the puck hard on the net. Picking up the rebound Cooper Walker brought the Canucks within one, eleven and a half minutes into the second. Tension rose shortly after when Jett Woo and Akito Hirose both got into it with Drake Caggiula and Max Wanner. Neither team was able to score in the remaining minutes, and the Canucks were down by one heading into the final frame. 

Halfway through the third period, Bakersfield found the back of the net after intercepting a Canucks play, restoring their 2-goal lead as a result of Carl Berglund’s first goal of the season. In a last-ditch effort by the Canucks, they pulled the netminder to add an extra man on the ice with just over 2 minutes to play. Although preventing the Condors from notching any empty net goals, The Canucks could not muster up enough goals to push back against the Condors, and they dropped this one 3-1. 

The two teams will rematch tomorrow before the Abby Canucks take on the Coachella Valley Firebirds next weekend for Hockey Fights Cancer and Movember Night.

The Canucks fell 3-1 against the Bakersfield Condors

The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their California road trip with a one-stop visit to Ontario to take on the Ontario Reign. This is the first meeting between the two teams since round two of the playoffs, where Ontario came out on top. 

Arshdeep Bains made his Abbotsford debut this season, fresh off a successful stint and his first NHL goal up with the big club, the Vancouver Canucks. He would wing Nils Åman, also a fresh pair of legs to the Abbotsford lineup, with Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Max Sasson centered John Stevens and Danila Klimovich, followed by Tristen Nielsen, Ty Mueller, and Chase Wouters. Ty Glover and Cooper Walker paired up as the final 2 forwards tonight.
 
On defence, the team shook things up, switching up some pairings from the past few games. Layton Ahac got some top-line action alongside Jett Woo, and Elias Pettersson paired up with Cole McWard. Veteran Guillaume Brisebois lined up next to rookie Kirill Kudryavtsev, and Christian Wolanin hung out as the 7th defencemen, rounding out the blue line. 

Nikita Tolopilo got the nod in net tonight and faced netminder Eric Portillo at the opposing end. 

It was a 'blink-and-you-miss-it' kind of first period. The first goal of the game went quickly to the Ontario Reign, as their star forward Samuel Fagemo opened the scoring just 3 and a half minutes into the game. Taylor Ward took the next shot in the game, and the puck found the back of the net once again, giving the Reign an early 2-goal lead less than a minute later. The Canucks then found themselves on a powerplay, and Danila Klimovich was able to capitalize with a snipe from the point to get the Canucks on the board and cut the Reign’s lead in half. Arshdeep Bains got his first assist of the season on Klimovich’s goal. The momentum shifted quickly, when just 20 seconds later Charles Hudon lit the lamp, restoring the Reign’s 2-goal lead. The game settled down for a little bit, with the Canucks getting some grade-A chances, but couldn’t capitalize. After the halfway point, Jeff Malott sealed the deal in the first period, getting his first goal of the season to give Ontario a 3-goal lead heading back to the dressing room.

The Reign once again were the first to strike, just over 3 minutes in, when Charles Hudon netted his second goal of the game, giving them a 4-goal cushion. The Canucks had to step on the gas to get themselves back into this game. 5 minutes later, Ontario was called for hooking and the Canucks caught a break, and headed to the powerplay. Jonathan Lekkerimäki did what he does best and fired one home on the man advantage to lessen the deficit, 5-2. Not long after, the Canucks continued putting pucks on net, but it was John Stevens who shot in front and Ty Mueller was there to deflect it in, bringing the Canucks within 2 once again. This goal came as Ty Mueller’s first AHL goal and helped the Canucks inch closer to a sought-after comeback.

Keeping with the pattern, The Reign once again opened the scoring in the final frame, as Tyler Madden completed the tic-tac-toe sequence to put them up 6-2. Quick to respond, however, was Arshdeep Bains when he picked up his own rebound to sneak one past Portillo to bring them within 2 for the third time this game. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long as a late powerplay for the Reign meant Jack Studnicka would find a way to get on the board and score their 7th goal of the game. In a last-ditch effort by the Canucks to close the gap, Tolopilo was pulled from the net to give the team an extra body on the ice. The puck got past the blue line and despite the defencemen’s best effort to stop them, Samuel Fagaemo was just that much quicker and was able to solidify the empty net goal, bringing their tally up to 8 goals. 

The Canucks couldn’t complete the comeback after dropping 4 goals early in the game and lost this one 8-4 against the Ontario Reign.

The team finally returns home for a 4 game stint against the Condors and Firebirds for some action-packed games, including Country Night and Movember Night, kicking off at the Abbotsford Centre on Saturday night!

The Canucks fall 8-4 against the Ontario Reign to conclude their roadtrip

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their 4th game against the San Diego Gulls tonight at Pechanga Arena and looked to sweep the weekend series following a 3-1 victory last night. 

Jiřï Patera got his back-to-back start tonight, after being just 52 seconds away from a shutout last night. Like last weekend, the Gulls swapped net minders and Oscar Dansk got the nod in net at the other end. 

A notable change to the Canucks lineup tonight, Nils Åman made his season debut with Abbotsford tonight, after clearing waivers this morning. He centered Aatu Räty and Jonathan Lekkerimäki, getting first-line minutes. John Stevens slotted in with Max Sasson and Tristen Nielsen, and Ty Mueller and Carsen Twarynski bookended Chase Wouters. Ty Glover returned to the lineup and paired up with Cooper Walker and Dino Kambeitz to round out the offence. 

At the blue line, there was no change to the top line consisting of Guillaume Brisebois and Jett Woo, and Elias Pettersson and Cole McWard. Christian Wolanin joins Layton Ahac to solidify the defence and closed out the Canucks lineup. 

The first period was slow to start, but once it got going, the floodgates opened. The Canucks first killed off two consecutive penalties, before they had their go at the powerplay. Just a minute into their first powerplay of the game, the Gulls drew their second penalty, leaving the Canucks on the 5-on-3. Just as the first powerplay expired, Jonathan Lekkerimäki ripped one home on the man advantage to get the Canucks on the board. Just 2 minutes later, Nils Åman passed the puck in front to Jonathan Lekkerimäki, who was able to tuck it up under the bar to secure his second of the game, and a 2 goal lead for the Canucks heading into the second period. 

Unlike the first, the second period got off to a quick start when Max Sasson was able to pick up the rebound off of Elias Pettersson’s shot just a minute and a half in, to put the Canucks up 3-0. The Gulls, still looking to get on the board, kept hitting a roadblock as they drew some penalties. When they finally returned to 5-on-5 hockey, Nikita Nesterenko was able to get things started for the home team, putting the Gulls on the board with just over halfway to play in the period. The goaltenders were able to hold it to just one goal a piece and the Canucks had a 3-1 lead into the third. 

Off the draw, Cole McWard ripped one from the point just 47 seconds into the final frame. The Canucks restored their 3-goal lead very early on and maintained it for half of the period. The Gulls then placed Calle Clang in net, hoping for a change of pace. At the 10-minute mark, Rodwin Dionicio netted his first AHL goal and cut the Canucks lead to 2. Two minutes later, Ryan Carpenter got one past Patera on the powerplay to make it a one-goal game. Just over a minute later, Roland McKeown tied the game after lighting the lamp once again for San Diego. Sam Colangelo was next to get his name on the score sheet, and for the first time tonight, the Gulls had the lead with three and a half minutes left. The Canucks, looking to tie it back up and force overtime, pulled their goalie, but it was Nikita Nesterenko who capitalized on the empty net to get the Gulls' 6th goal of the game.

Despite holding the lead for 50 minutes, 5 unanswered goals in the third period from the Gulls meant the Canucks would drop this one, 6-4. 

Abbotsford will head to Ontario for their first match of the season to close out their Californian road trip on Wednesday night. The Canucks will then return home for a 4 game stint against the Condors and Firebirds for some action packed games, including Country night and Movember night.

The Abbotsford Canucks headed back on the road, kicking off a 3-game Californian visit with a Saturday night game against the San Diego Gulls. The Canucks and Gulls saw each other just last week when the Canucks held their Home Opener weekend, where they split the series 1-1. 

Jiří Patera got his first go at the Gulls tonight, going head-to-head with Calle Clang at the other end.
The Canucks once again returned to an 11 and 7 formation, and kicking things off were John Stevens, Aatu Räty and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Tristen Nielsen and Carsen Twarynski bookended Max Sasson, and Chase Wouters centered Ty Mueller and Cooper Walker. Rounding out the offense were Nate Smith and Dino Kambeitz. 

On defense, Guillaume Brisebois and Jett Woo continued to pair up, and Elias Pettersson and Kirill Kudryavtsev followed suit. Layton Ahac suited up for his debut as an Abbotsford Canuck, and he lined up next to Cole McWard, as Christian Wolanin completed the Canucks lineups as the 7th defenceman. 

After splitting the series last weekend, both teams were eager for the go-ahead game. Not a ton of action for the first half of the game, but it was John Stevens who netted the first goal of the game after a cross-feed pass from Aatu Räty, and the Canucks had the first lead of the game after 9 minutes of play. No one else was able to light the lamp, with both goaltenders on the ball, stopping the rest of the shots this period, and the Canucks headed to the dressing room up by 1. 

The puck dropped on the second period and although ahead, the Canucks were still looking for some more insurance. A quick delay of game penalty was called on the Canucks just under 2 minutes into the period. That did not stop John Stevens and Aatu Räty, when they found themselves on a 2-on-1, just 30 seconds into killing the penalty. With a pass across from Stevens, Räty was able able to tuck it past Calle Clang and the Canucks had a two-goal lead. Nate Smith followed that up with another shorthanded breakaway chance, but Clang mustered up the stop. There were some more great chances, but Patera held strong, ensuring the Canucks would head into the third up by 2. 

The Gulls were now desperate to get on the board but the Canucks did not step off the gas. Both teams were on their best behaviours now, with no one drawing penalties, but neither team could get a goal. After 15 minutes of play, the score remained unchanged, and the Canucks still had the lead. There were a ton of great chances for the Gulls in their attempt for a comeback, but Patera wasn’t budging. San Diego pulled their goalie with 3 and a half minutes to play, pulling their last-ditch effort to generate more offence. Instead, it was Aatu Räty who picked up the loose puck and put it in the empty net to notch the Canucks third goal of the game. Just 53 seconds away from his second shutout this season, Roland McKeown was able to tuck one past Patera to get the Gulls on the board and cut the Canucks lead to 2, but it still wasn't enough to complete a comeback.

The Canucks defeat the Gulls in a 3-1 victory tonight, to pull themselves ahead in the season series. John Stevens also notched his 100th point as an Abbotsford Canuck and stayed hot to total a combined 6 points with Aatu Räty tonight. 

The two teams will rematch tomorrow at 5 PM in San Diego, before heading to Ontario for their first match of the season against the Reign. The Canucks then return home for a 4 game stint against the Condors and Firebirds for some action-packed games, including Country Night and Movember Night.

THE CANUCKS DEFEAT THE GULLS IN A 3-1 VICTORY

The Abbotsford Canucks hosted the Tucson Roadrunners again tonight, following a 3-0 shutout victory last night. With a combined 61 penalty minutes last game, tonight is expected to be another physical battle.

There were changes to the goaltending tonight, as Nikita Tolopilo got the nod to stand between the pipes for the Canucks, and Jaxon Stauber started tonight for the Roadrunners. 

Returning to the typical 12 and 6 formation, Guillaume Brisebois and Jett Woo got things started on the blue line. Elias Pettersson paired up with Kirill Kudryavtsev, and Christian Wolanin linked with Cole McWard. 

Up front, Ty Mueller found himself centering the first line alongside Aatu Räty and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Tristen Nielsen and Danila Klimovich bookended Max Sasson, followed by John Stevens, Chase Wouters, and Nate Smith. Carsen Twarynski and Cooper Walker drew back into the lineup alongside Dino Kambietz to round out the Canucks lineup tonight. 

It was an action-packed first period, that kicked off just 37 seconds in, when Kevin Connauton scored early for Tucson, to give the Roadrunners an early lead. Then, Sam Lipkin was waiting on the doorstep when he received the puck from Hunter Drew and was able to tuck it past Tolopilo to give the Roadrunners a 2 goal lead. The teams exchanged a bunch of penalties, but the Roadrunners found themselves with a man advantage with 6 minutes left in the period. Egor Sokolov was able to capitalize, further extending the lead for the visiting team. Shortly thereafter, Jonathan Lekkerimaki was able to rip one home from the point to cut the Roadrunners' lead back to 2 and get the Canucks on the board. This was Jonathan Lekkerimäki’s second goal in two games. With just twenty-five seconds remaining in the period, Josh Doan added some more insurance for Tucson, and the Canucks were down 4-1 into the second period.

Jiřï Patera slotted between the pipes to kick off the second. Max Sasson wasted no time getting on the board when he found himself on a breakaway just under two minutes in, where he ripped one home to cut the Roadrunners lead in half. Jaxon Stauber held the Canucks to just one goal this period, but Patera made a massive save to ensure Sasson has the lone goal of the period. A bunch more penalties were exchanged between the two teams, but it was the Canucks that found themselves on a 4-on-3 that would carry over to start the final frame.

Looking to complete a comeback, the Canucks fired out 16 shots in the third period and held the Roadrunners to just 6. Unfortunately, it was Josh Doan who found the back of the net just at just under the halfway mark to extend the Roadrunners lead 5 to 2. Abbotsford battled hard to the very end, with a huge push to get something going but everything was going just shy of the net. 

Despite outshooting the Roadrunners 40-21, the Canucks couldn’t complete the comeback after dropping 4 goals in the first period and lost the latter of the back-to-back, 5-2. 

The Canucks head to San Diego to take on the Gulls once again, and close the road trip out with a game in Ontario, before returning home to take on Coachella Valley for Country Night on Nov 9th.

The Canucks fall 5-2 against the Tucson Roadrunners

For the first time this season, the Abbotsford Canucks are facing off against the Tucson Roadrunners, after going 2 and 2 with them last season. Aatu Räty is also going up against his brother Aku Räty tonight, on home ice, for the first time this season. 

Jiří Patera got the nod and went between the pipes tonight, to make his home-ice debut as an Abbotsford Canuck. Matthew Villalta was in net for the visiting Tucson Roadrunners. 

Kicking off the offense tonight were Philip Di Giuseppe, Aatu Räty, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Ty Mueller and Danila Klimovich bookended Max Sasson, and Chase Wouters centered Tristen Nielsen and Nate Smith. Deciding to go with an 11 and 7 formation, left John Stevens and Dino Kambeitz as the final two forwards. 

On the backend, defensive duos remained the same, with Jett Woo and Guillaume Brisebois, Elias Pettersson and Mark Friedman, and Kirill Kudryavtsev and Cole McWard. Christian Wolanin drew back into the lineup tonight as the seventh defencemen and rounded out the roster. 

The first period didn’t see a ton of action. A pair of evenly matched teams went head-to-head and exchanged a few penalties, and some close chances, but the goalies ultimately stood tall, stopping everything that came their way. The game was scoreless after the first 20 minutes of play. 

Looking to get on the board first, the Canucks drew 4 straight powerplays in the second period. Matthew Villalta held strong as the backbone of the Roadrunners as the Canucks were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. It was a goalie standoff through to the third period, with Jiří also stopping another 9 shots, to keep the game scoreless after 40 minutes. However, the Roadrunners drew 2 penalties at the end of the period so that the Canucks would start the third with a 2 man advantage. 

The Canucks bounced back with a massive third period. John Stevens was the first to break the standoff, ripping one top shelf right past Vallalta, and the Canucks were up 1-0, five minutes into the third. Five minutes later, the Canucks capitalized on the powerplay when Kirill Kudryavtsev ripped one from the point, to net his first career AHL goal, and give the Canucks a 2-goal lead! The action didn’t stop there, because Jonathan Lekkerimäki picked up the rebound from Jett Woo, to notch his first goal of the season on the powerplay. 

The buzzer sounded to call the game, and the Canucks took this one ,3-0, to shut out the Tucson Roadrunners in their first matchup of the season. Jiří Patera stopped all 22 shots that came his way, and he secured his first shutout as an Abbotsford Canuck! 

The Canucks will rematch the Roadrunners again tomorrow night, before heading back on the road to take on the Gulls once again.

Diwali Night will be focused on celebrating and honouring the lively culture of the South Asian community in the Fraser Valley while bringing the entire community together for fun, good food, and music! 

 
The commemoration of Diwali is the festival of lights, an important religious celebration for Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs (Bandi Chhor Divas). Originating in India, Diwali is celebrated all over the world. During this time, houses are decorated with diyas (candles), deepavali (lamps), and Rangoli artwork (patterns on the ground created by coloured powder or rice). Diwali is one of the most popular festivals in the South Asian calendar.  

 
Diwali encourages a strong sense of unity with communities sharing food and gifts among friends, family, and those in need. Firework displays are presented in the community to highlight celebrations and show light triumph over darkness. Diwali means "row of lighted lamps" with light symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, prosperity over poverty, and knowledge over ignorance.  
 
The festivities can be observed throughout the evening, with activations around the Abbotsford Centre, including: 
 
- DJ Heer performing pre-game on the plaza and throughout the game 
- Diwali décor spread across the concourse provided by Abby Wedding 
- Multiple activations in Section 101 
- Henna provided by the South Asian Resource Office 
- Chai sampling from Chaiiwala 
- Paneer samples courtesy of Ridgecrest Dairy 
- Guru Nanak Food Bank in Community Corner  
- Learning Stars Arts Academy performing at the intermission

Last night, the Abbotsford Canucks dominated the game to defeat the San Diego Gulls 3-1 in their Home Opener. Tonight, the Canucks looked to do the same thing and hoped to sweep this series, 2-0. 

Back between the pipes again tonight was Nikita Tolopilo, after leading the Canucks to victory in all of his starts so far this season. He will face off against Oskar Dansk, a new face from last night.  No notable changes were made to the defensive line tonight, putting forward the same 3 lines consisting of Guillaume Brisebois and Jett Woo, Elias Pettersson and Mark Friedman, followed by Kirill Kudryavtsev and Cole McWard. 

Philip Di Giuseppe made his season debut tonight with Abbotsford, bookending Aatu Räty with Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Max Sasson centered Danila Klimovich and Ty Mueller, followed by Tristen Nielsen, Chase Wouters, and Nate Smith. Rounding out the offense were Carsen Twarynski, John Stevens, and Dino Kambeitz. 

The Gulls came out swinging and were all over the Canucks in the first period. A couple of great chances from the Canaucks but it was ultimately Sam Colangelo of the Gulls who was able to pick up the rebound and sneak one past Tolopilo to get the lone goal of the period. San Diego headed into the second period up by 1, after 11 shots on net. 

The second period didn’t go as planned for the Canucks. Not much to report on for the first half, but Ronald McKeown changed things when he rifled one over the line after a pass from Carson Meyer to put the Gulls up 2 – 0. Five minutes later, Chase Wouters got called for hooking, and 20 seconds later Jett Woo followed him in, leaving the Gulls on a 5 on 3. Jansen Harkins was the one to capitalize, extending San Diego’s lead to 3 goals. With the Canucks still killing Woo's penalty, Jansen Harkins got another one just 1 minute later, and the Gulls had a 4 goal lead moving into the final frame. 

The Canucks now hungry to get something going, generated a ton of chances but everything was just missing the target. Chase Wouters found himself on a breakaway but was tripped on the way there. A penalty shot was awarded and he scored the first penalty shot in franchise history to cut the Gulls lead to 3. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get the momentum going and the Canucks dropped this game 4-1 to split the series. 

The Canucks return on Tuesday, Oct 29th for Diwali Night and October 30th for Trick or Treat night when they take on the Tucson Roadrunners.

The Canucks fall  4-1 against the San Diego Gulls to spilt the series.

After starting the season on a 4 game road trip, the Abbotsford Canucks finally returned home and hosted their Home Opener, taking on the San Diego Gulls. 

In net for the Canucks tonight is Nikita Tolopilo after playing a full 60 mins in both of the Canucks wins so far this season. He is going head-to-head with Calle Clang of the San Diego Gulls. Standing tall in front of him are Guillaume Brisebois and Jett Woo, followed by Elias Pettersson and Mark Friedman, and Kirill Kudryavtsev and Cole McWard. 

Up front, Jonathan Lekkerimäki made his season debut tonight, winging Aatu Räty with Tristen Nielsen. Max Sasson centered Danila Klimovich and Ty Mueller, and John Stevens and Nate Smith bookended Chase Wouters. Carsen Twarynski, Cooper Walker, and Dino Kambeitz rounded out the Canucks Home Opener Lineup. 

The Gulls were quick to capitalize, when just 3 minutes into the game Judd Caufield passed in front to Yegor Sidorov who scored the first goal of the game and put the Gulls up 1-0. Abbotsford drew the first penalty of the game just 5 minutes later and was able to capitalize to tie the game up. Danila Klimovich ripped one from the point right past Clang and the game was tied. Another 5 minutes later, Jonathan Lekkerimäki took his shot on net from the point, and with Räty parked in front, the puck was deflected in, and the Canucks had a 1-goal lead. Abbotsford held on to that and headed into the second period up 2-1. 

The Abbotsford Canucks were all over the Gulls during the second period, holding them to just 1 shot. With the Canucks holding possession of the puck for the majority of the period, Ty Mueller was able to intercept a Gulls play to set up Mark Friedman, who placed the puck perfectly in the back of the net! The Canucks then maintained a 3-1 lead going into the third period.

With twenty minutes left to play, the Canucks looked to hold onto the lead and close out their home opener with the lead. The Gulls had a strong push, but neither team was able to find the back of the net again. 

Despite dropping the first goal, the Canucks were able to fight back and defeat the Gulls 3-1 in their first home game of the season!

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS WELCOME FANS BACK FOR HOME-OPENER WEEKEND  

The Abbotsford Canucks faced off against the Colorado Eagles once again tonight for their final stop on the road before finally heading home for their home opener! Tonight’s game was one for the history books as Abby Canucks Captain, Chase Wouters, marked his 200th AHL Career Game played, as well as became the first person in franchise history to play 200 games with the team! 

There was a bit of a switch-up with the lines tonight, as Sammy Blais, Aatu Räty, and Nate Smith kicked things off offensively. Max Sasson slotted in between Tristen Nielsen and Carsen Twarynski, followed by John Stevens, Ty Mueller, and Danila Klimovich. Ty Glover entered the lineup for his first game of the season, bookending Abby Canucks captain Chase Wouters with Dino Kambeitz.

At the blue line, no notable changes from last night as duos Elias Pettersson and Jett Woo, Guillaume Brisebois and Cole McWard, and Akito Hirose and Kirill Kudryavtsev stuck together. 

A change from last night came between both pipes, with Jiří Patera starting for the Canucks, and Kevin Mandolese getting the nod for the Eagles.

The first period was off to a hot start, with both teams looking to get on the board early. Tensions rose between the two rivals, both looking to come away with the win tonight. Jett Woo dropped the gloves with Jacob Macdonald, landing themselves in the box for 5 minutes. Despite getting outshot 12-3, Jiří Patera stopped everything coming his way as neither team was able to crack the netminders. The game was scoreless once again heading into the second. 

Still looking to get onto the board, Colorado was the first to strike when Mark Senden put one past Patera just after the halfway mark in the second. The Eagles had the first lead of the game finding themselves up 1-0. A couple of good chances for the Canucsk here, but it was ultimately Connor Mayer who got the puck into the net to give the Eagles a 2-goal lead heading into the third period. 

The Canucks now desperate to get their game back, first had to kill off the rest of a lingering penalty. Shortly after the successful penalty kill, Ty Glover was able to tip the shot from Jett Woo for his first goal of the season, to get the Canucks on the board and cut the deficit to just 1 goal. Unfortunately, the Eagles offense erupted after this, going on to score 4 more goals. Tye Felhaber put up his first two goals of the season, as well as Jere Innala and Connor Mayer scored the other 2 to give the Eagles a 5 goal lead. 

The Canucks dropped this one 6-1 to conclude their 4-game road trip, and will finally make their return to the Abbotsford Centre for their home opener on Oct 25th.

The Canucks fell 6-1 to the Colorado Eagles on their final stint of the roadtrip

The Abbotsford Canucks headed south of the border to face the Colorado Eagles for the first time since knocking them out of the playoffs last April.

For the first time this season, the Canucks chose to roll with the classic 12 and 6 formation against the Eagles. Tristen Nielsen and Linus Karlsson bookended Aatu Räty, as he played his first game with the Abby Canucks this season since starting the year up with the big club. Max Sasson slotted in between Sammy Blais and Danila Klimovich, followed by John Stevens, Ty Mueller, and Nate Smith. Chase Wouters closed out the offense centering Carsen Twarynski and Dino Kambeitz. 

On the backend, Elias Pettersson paired up with Jett Woo, followed by Guillaume Brisebois and Cole McWard, as well as Akito Hirose and Kirill Kudryavtsev. Nikitia Tolopilo got the nod once again tonight, facing off against Trent Miner.

The puck dropped on the first period with both teams looking to make their mark on the first game of this series. The teams exchanged a few penalties but neither team was able to capitalize. The Eagles came the closest to cracking the scoreboard, but Tolopilo shut it down to keep the game scoreless into the second. 

The Canucks kicked off the second period by killing off a 5-on-3, which they were able to do successfully. A few more penalties were exchanged but once again neither team was able to capitalize. Nikita Tolopilo continued to stand on his head, making unreal stops and shutting down everything coming his way. The goalies remained at a standoff through to the third period. 

Max Sasson was the first to break the deadlock just over 4 minutes into the third period, picking up an unassisted goal to get the Canucks on the board first. Jason Polin answered back for the Eagles grabbing his second goal of the season from T.J. Tynan and Oskar Olausson to tie the game up. After being locked at 1 goal a piece, the Canucks and Eagles found themselves unable to settle in regulation forcing overtime. 

After a couple of good chances, the clock ran out on the extra time forcing the Canucks into a shootout once again.

The Canucks beat the Colorado Eagles 2-1 in a shootout victory

The Abbotsford closed out their season opener road trip today, facing off against the Calgary Wranglers, hot off an opening night win. 

The Canucks once again chose to continue with an 11 and 7 formation, with very minimal changes from Friday’s game. The trio, Tristen Nielsen, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson stuck together to kick off the offense tonight, and Ty Mueller slotted in the middle of Sammy Blais and Danila Klimovich. John Stevens and Carsen Twarynski bookended Nate Smith, and Chase Wouters paired up with Dino Kambietz once again to solidify the forwards. 
There were no changes to the backend lines, as Guillaume Brisebois and Jett Woo continued to pair up, followed by duos Cole McWard and  Erik Brännström, as well as Elias Pettersson alongside Mark Friedman.  Kirill Kudryavtsev remained the 7th defender to close out the blue line. 

A notable change in the crease, as Jiří Patera started in net for the first time as Abby Canuck, facing off against Devin Cooley with the Wranglers. 

The first period saw action quickly, with Dryden Hunt getting on the board for the Wranglers just 46 seconds into the game. The Canucks found themselves down by 1 very early into the game, looking for the equalizer. A couple of good chances, but it was ultimately Dino Kambeitz who came to the rescue, scoring a shorthanded and unassisted goal just under 14 minutes into the first, to tie the game up at 1. Both teams pushed to get the go-ahead goal, but it was Chase Wouters who came the closest, once again finding himself on a shorthanded breakaway.  Devin Cooley was able to stop his shot with 30 seconds left in the first, leaving the game tied heading into the second.  

Heading into the second, both teams looked to get the go-ahead goal. The Canucks had some great chances, but just couldn’t tuck it past Cooley. Carsen Twarynski found himself in a great spot, with just under 5 minutes left in the period, and he was able to lay down the slapshot straight to the back of the net, giving the Canucks the much-wanted go-ahead. Carsen Twarynski scored the lone goal of the period, and the Canucks were up by 1 heading into the third. 

Walker Duehr wasted no time in the third, grabbing his first goal of the season just a minute and twenty seconds in. Duehr’s goal tied the game up for the Wranglers, extending their life in the third. Shortly thereafter, the Canucks headed to the powerplay, but the Wranglers were able to capitalize on a turnover sending themselves on a 2 on 1 toward Patera. Patera comes up big with a massive stop, directly leading to Tristen Nielsen and Linus Karlsson breaking out on a 2-on-1 in the other direction, where Linus Karlsson grabbed his 1st of the season, and gave the Canucks a 3-2 lead. Desperate to stay in the game, Lucas Ciona came up big for the Wranglers and tied the game up at 3, leading to overtime. 

Overtime was a goalie's game, as neither team was able to score that game-winning goal. 5 minutes of extra hockey were played, and teams headed to a shootout after being deadlocked at 3 goals a piece.

The Wranglers took this game in a shootout, but the Canucks still picked up 3 out of 4 possible points on this road trip. Abbotsford will head to Colorado to face the Eagles next weekend, before finally returning home for their home opener weekend against the San Diego Gulls on Oct 25-26.

The Abbotsford Canucks fell to the Calgary Wranglers 4-3 in a shootout. 

CANUCKS FALL TO THE WRANGLERS 4-3 IN A SHOOTOUT LOSS

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off the 2024-25 regular season tonight, taking on their rivals, the Calgary Wranglers. Manny Malhotra also made his AHL Head coaching debut tonight, alongside new assistant coaches Jordan Smith and Harry Mahesh. 

The Abbotsford Canucks debuted many new faces tonight, deciding to go with an 11 and 7 formation. Kicking things off up front, familiar faces Tristen Nielsen, Max Sasson, and Linus Karlsson line up next to each other, followed by Danila Klimovich alongside new names Sammy Blais and Nate Smith. John Stevens winged newbie Carsen Twarynski and Ty Mueller who made his AHL Debut tonight in his hometown. Captain Chase Wouters paired up with Dino Kambietz to round out the offense. 

On the backend, Guillaume Brisebois and Jett Woo linked up, while Cole McWard paired up with new acquisition Erik Brännström. Elias Pettersson returns alongside Mark Friedman, and Kirill Kudryavtsev closed out the blue line.

The first period got off to a hot start with both teams getting some good chances on net, but the netminders came to play, not allowing anything past them for the greater part of the period. The battle for the first goal of the season finally concluded, with Abbotsford’s Captain, Chase Wouters, picking up the rebound from Carsen Twarynksi and burying it in the back of the net to claim that title with 2 minutes left in the first. Just a minute and a half later, Sammy Blais netted his first as an Abby Canuck, after tipping in the wraparound from Erik Brännström. Abbotsford closed out the first 20, with a 2-goal lead. 

Looking to extend their lead in the second, Danila Klimovich found himself on a breakaway just over 4 and a half minutes in, where he was able to tuck it away for his first goal of the season, and put the Canucks up 3-0. Shortly after that, Rory Kerins netted his first of the season and put the Wranglers on the board. Tristen Nielsen was quick to respond, as he ripped a sharp-angle shot into the back of the net, restoring the Canucks 3-goal lead once again. The Wranglers, determined to provide some adversity, saw Ilya Solovyov cut the Canucks lead in half once again before heading into the third period. 

The final 20 minutes saw both teams battling for the win, but the Wranglers found themselves on another powerplay around 8 minutes in, where Rory Kerins doubled down and netted his second of the night to bring Calgary within 1. Calgary found themselves on another powerplay with 3 minutes left, but the Canucks held on and were able to come away with their first win of the season on opening night. 

Congratulations to Manny Malhotra on securing his first win as Head Coach of the Abbotsford Canucks tonight. Kirill Kudryavtsev also got his first AHL point in his first AHL game in Calgary tonight, and Tristen Nielsen now holds the franchise record of single most Game Winning Goals after scoring the go-ahead goal tonight. 

The Abbotsford Canucks will rematch the Wranglers once again on Sunday at noon PT in Calgary, before heading to Colorado to face the Colorado Eagles for the first time since knocking them out of the playoffs in May.

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off the 24.25 Season with a 4-3 win over the Calgary Wranglers.

CANUCKS BEAT THE WRANGLERS 4-3 IN SEASON OPENER

The Abbotsford Canucks announced today the club’s 2024.25 AHL Opening Night Roster, ahead of tonight's season opener at Calgary. The 29-man roster includes fifteen (15) forwards, eleven (11) defencemen and three goaltenders.
Eighteen (18) players are returning to the Abbotsford Canucks, having played at least one game during the 2022.23 and/or 2023.24 seasons. Danila Klimovich, Tristen Nielsen, John Stevens, Jett Woo and Chase Wouters represent the five players who will be joining the team for a fourth consecutive season, having joined the team during Abbotsford’s 2021.22 inaugural campaign.

Forwards Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Ty Mueller and Cooper Walker, defencemen Christian Felton, Kirill Kudryavtsev and Elias Pettersson, and goaltender Ty Young represent the seven rookies to have made the team out of training camp.
Of the 29 players who make up the team’s roster, nine joined the organization via NHL free agency, eight were selected by Vancouver via the NHL Entry Draft, seven joined the organization via AHL free agency, four were originally acquired by Vancouver via trade and one was originally acquired by Utica via AHL trade.

The roster features at least one player of six different nationalities (Canada, United States, Sweden, Belarus, Czechia and Russia), including two players native to British Columbia.

CANUCKS ANNOUNCE 2024.25 AHL OPENING NIGHT ROSTER

The Abbotsford Canucks announced today the club’s initial training camp roster. The 35-man roster includes 22 forwards, 10 defencemen and 3 goaltenders.

The 2024 Training Camp Roster features eight former Vancouver Canucks draft picks. In addition; 14 players were signed as free agents to AHL contracts, eight players were signed as free agents to NHL contracts by the Vancouver Canucks, and two players were acquired via trade by the Vancouver Canucks. The club also announced that forwards Davis Codd and Mark Cheremeta will both be participating under AHL Training Camp try-out agreements.

Sixteen (16) players from the roster appeared in at least one game with the Abbotsford Canucks during the 2023-24 AHL regular season and/or postseason.

Training camp will be held from October 2-5 at Abbotsford Centre, and will conclude with a full-team scrimmage on Saturday, October 5 at 11 a.m. Ice sessions from October 2-4 are expected to begin at approximately 10:30 a.m. each day. All ice sessions, as well as the scrimmage, are open to the public with doors opening at 10 a.m. each day.

Abbotsford, B.C. – The Abbotsford Canucks announced today the club’s first half Community & Fan Engagement Nights, beginning with the team’s Home Opener Weekend on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26, through to Wednesday, January 15 when the team hosts its annual Hockey Talks Night.

**SPRINGFIELD, Mass./AUSTIN, Texas** … The American Hockey League and FloSports have announced a multi-year extension of their media partnership, highlighted by an enhanced streaming experience for AHL fans as AHLTV joins the FloSports platform as AHLTV on FloHockey starting in the 2024-25 season.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS ANNOUNCE SINGLE GAME TICKETS FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE SEASON ON SALE AUGUST 30 

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today the hiring of Justin Pogge as Goaltending Coach of the club.
Pogge, 38, joins the Canucks organization after spending the 2023-24 season with the Columbus Blue Jackets as a Goaltending Consultant, in addition to working for Hockey Canada as a Goaltending Coach for Canada’s World Championship and Hlinka Gretzky Cup teams.

“First of all, I’d like to congratulate Marko Torenius on his well-deserved promotion to Vancouver,” said Johnson. “We thank him for his work and dedication to our team in Abbotsford over the past two seasons. With that being said, I am very excited to have Justin Pogge join our team as Goaltending Coach. He brings a plethora of experience as a player at the NHL, AHL, international and European professional levels and I’m looking forward to seeing him help develop our goaltenders in Abbotsford.”

A native of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Pogge enjoyed a 17-year professional career as a player that included 254 AHL regular season games, 13 Calder Cup Playoff games with Toronto Marlies, San Antonio Rampage, Albany River Rats, Charlotte Checkers and Portland Pirates. Originally selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round (90th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, he appeared in seven NHL games between Toronto, Anaheim and Phoenix before embarking on a European professional career that included time in Italy, Sweden, Slovakia and Germany.

Pogge played major junior hockey for the WHL’s Prince George Cougars and Calgary Hitmen, and notably posted a 6-0 record and tournament-best .952 save percentage during the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championships in Vancouver, Kelowna and Kamloops, on the way to capturing the Gold Medal with Team Canada.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS HIRE POGGE AS GOALTENDING COACH

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today the hiring of Harry Mahesh as Assistant Coach, Andrew Shaw as Video Coach, and Ross MacEluch as Assistant Athletic Therapist, in addition to confirming the rest of club’s hockey operations staff ahead of the 2024-25 American Hockey League season.

“I am very pleased with the new hires we have made, as well as the makeup of our entire staff as a whole,” said Abbotsford General Manager Ryan Johnson. “We have made a lot of changes heading into next season, and I think our fans should be excited about that. I am looking forward to seeing the group we now have drive our team’s performance and elevate the development of our organization’s prospects.”
Manny Malhotra will lead the hockey operations staff in his first season as Head Coach of the team, with the support of newly hired Assistant Coach Jordan Smith, as well as a returning Goaltending & Development Coach Marko Torenius.

Jordan Smith enters the Canucks organization from the St. Louis Blues AHL affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds, where he served as an Assistant Coach for the past two seasons. He has held Associate Coach positions with both the Sudbury Wolves and Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League, in addition to formerly serving as General Manager and Head Coach of the Soo Thunderbirds of the tier II Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario native led his hometown Thunderbirds to back-to-back NOJHL championships in 2015 and 2016, as well as being named the league’s Coach of the Year in both 2014 and 2015.

Harry Mahesh joins Abbotsford for his first coaching season in the AHL, having spent the 2023-24 season as a Coaching Development Associate for the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs, the Vanderhoof, B.C. native was previously an Assistant Coach with the BCHL’s Powell River Kings as well as serving as both General Manager and Head Coach of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s Winnipeg Freeze. Mahesh became the first ever General Manager of South Asian descent in Canadian Junior A hockey when he was hired by the Freeze in 2021, and has been affiliated with the NHL Coaches Association BIPOC Coaches Program.

Andrew Shaw will make his professional hockey debut as Video Coach for Abbotsford this upcoming season after departing from the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs. The Chilliwack, B.C. native held titles of Associate Coach, Assistant Coach and Video Coach with the Chiefs from 2019 to 2024.
Ross MacEluch now joins Abbotsford in a full-time position, having assisted the Canucks medical staff with injury assessment and return-to-play protocols since 2022. The Vancouver native is a graduate of Camosun College’s Athletic and Exercise Therapy program and began his career in hockey with the BCHL’s Coquitlam Express in 2018.

Ryan Johnson also confirmed that Nathan Wong has been promoted to Head Athletic Therapist of the club, and that Strength & Conditioning Coach John Murray, Head Equipment Manager Ramandeep “Chico” Dhanjal and Assistant Equipment Manager Shingo Sasaki will all be returning to their roles in 2024-25.

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Zach Okabe and defenceman Zach Berzolla to one-year AHL contracts ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Okabe, 23, spent the majority of the 2023-24 season with St. Cloud State University (NCHC), recording 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) and 21 penalty minutes over 38 NCAA games. He finished the season on an amateur try-out agreement with the Cleveland Monsters, finishing the season with three points (two goals, one assist) over nine AHL games and appeared in one Calder Cup Playoff game as well. The 5’9, 170-pound winger completed his collegiate career with 119 points (52 goals, 67 assists) and 81 penalty minutes over 176 games with St. Cloud State and captured an NCHC conference championship with the Huskies in 2023. Prior to starting his NCAA career, the Okotoks, Alberta native spent two seasons with the Grand Prairie Storm of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Born in Fukuoka, Japan, Okabe became the fourth Japan-born player in AHL history when he made his debut for Cleveland on March 27 at Grand Rapids.

Berzolla, 26, spent the 2023-24 campaign under an AHL contract with the Hartford Wolf Pack, splitting time between Hartford and the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones before having his re-assignment rights traded to the Florida Everblades. He finished the season skating in six regular season games for Florida before playing 23 postseason games on the way to capturing the Kelly Cup with the Everblades as ECHL Champions. The 6’2, 196-pound defender has skated in 29 AHL games between Hartford and Rochester, as well as 135 regular season and 43 postseason games in the ECHL since turning pro in 2021. The Howell, New Jersey native spent four collegiate seasons with Colorado College (NCHC), recording 23 points (four goals, 19 assists) and 23 penalty minutes over 133 NCAA games and served as captain of the Tigers during his senior year in 2020-21.

CANUCKS SIGN OKABE AND BERZOLLA TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACTS

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Cooper Walker to a one-year AHL contract extension, as well as signed forwards Lee Lapid and Ben Berard to one-year AHL contracts ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Walker, 22, began his first professional season in 2023-24 with the Canucks’ ECHL affiliate Kalamazoo Wings, recording 13 points (three goals, 10 assists) and 15 penalty minutes over 36 games. The 6-0, 174-pound centre made his AHL debut with Abbotsford on Jan. 27 and scored his first career AHL goal (and point) against recent Canucks’ free agent signing Jiří Patera at Henderson on March 8. He finished the 2023-24 campaign with Abbotsford, skating in 13 regular season games and three Calder Cup Playoff games. A native of Cambridge, Ontario, Walker originally joined the organization as an undrafted major junior free agent when he signed a one-year AHL contract with Abbotsford on May 18, 2023.

Lapid, 26, split his second professional campaign between the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones and SaiPa of Finland’s top league (Liiga) in 2023-24. Over the past two seasons, the 6-1, 201-pound centre has skated in 93 ECHL regular season games with Cincinnati, recording 69 points (21 goals, 48 assists) and 34 penalty minutes, as well as five points (one goal, four assists) and six penalty minutes over 11 postseason games. Prior to turning pro, the Thornhill, Ontario native spent four seasons with Canisius College (AHA), recording 61 points (30 goals, 31 assists) and 87 penalty minutes over 97 NCAA games.

Berard, 25, spent the entirety of his first full professional season in 2023-24 with the Dallas Stars’ AHL affiliate Texas Stars. The 6-0, 192-pound winger recorded four points (one goal, three assists) and six penalty minutes over 30 regular season games, and also skated in seven Calder Cup playoff games for Texas. A native of Duncan, British Columbia, Berard spent three seasons with the BCHL’s Powell River Kings and served as the club’s captain during his final junior campaign in 2018-19. Before turning pro, he spent four seasons with Cornell University (ECAC), recording 68 points (32 goals, 36 assists) and 18 penalty minutes over 87 NCAA games.


CANUCKS EXTEND WALKER, ADD LAPID AND BERARD TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACTS

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Carsen Twarynski to a one-year contract ahead of the 2024-25 AHL season.

Twarynski, 26, has skated in 276 AHL regular season games between Lehigh Valley, Charlotte, Coachella Valley and Bridgeport, recording 44 goals, 46 assists and 165 penalty minutes. He has also skated in 35 AHL postseason games, including 26 with Coachella Valley during their Calder Cup Final run in 2023. The Calgary, Alberta native also brings NHL experience to Abbotsford, having played 22 games with the Philadelphia Flyers between 2019 and 2021.

The 6-2, 198-pound winger split the 2023-24 campaign evenly between Austria and the AHL, skating in 27 games for the Vienna Capitals (ICEHL) and finishing the season playing 27 games for the Bridgeport Islanders.

Twarynski was selected by Philadelphia in the third round (82nd overall) of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and was also selected in the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft from Philadelphia by the Seattle Kraken. Prior to making his AHL debut with Lehigh Valley in 2017, he spent five full seasons in the Western Hockey League between his hometown Calgary Hitmen and the Kelowna Rockets.
