Abbotsford, B.C. - The Abbotsford Canucks announced today that their 2023 Training Camp will be held in Chilliwack, BC beginning on Wednesday, October 4 and concluding on Saturday, October 7. All four days of on-ice training camp sessions will be open to the public and will be held at Chilliwack Coliseum. The camp will also feature the team’s inaugural ‘Abbotsford Canucks Minor Hockey Festival’, which will take place on Saturday, October 7.

“We are thrilled to partner with the Abbotsford Canucks,” said Chilliwack Chiefs Vice President of Business Operations Barry Douglas. “This is another fantastic opportunity for the Chilliwack Coliseum to help showcase our community. We are especially excited for the Saturday when we can celebrate hockey in the Fraser Valley.”

The inaugural Abbotsford Canucks Minor Hockey Festival on Saturday, October 7 will include free on-site activations for fans of all ages, including inflatables, air brush tattoos, an appearance from Vancouver Canucks mascot Fin, as well as a full-team scrimmage at 12 p.m. At the conclusion of the scrimmage, fans will have the opportunity to meet and greet with current Abbotsford Canucks players along with Vancouver Canucks alumni. Following the Festival, the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs will host the Vernon Vipers at 6 p.m.

“We are excited to be holding camp in Chilliwack this October,” said Abbotsford Canucks General Manager Ryan Johnson. “This is a great opportunity for our players to be in the community and for our organization to connect with our fanbase east of Abbotsford.”

The Abbotsford Canucks Minor Hockey Festival will provide an opportunity for boys and girls minor hockey players aged 8-12 to take part in ‘Skill & Drill’ sessions. These on-ice sessions will feature Vancouver Canucks Alumni and current Assistant Director of Player Development Chris Higgins, Abbotsford Head Coach Jeremy Colliton, and other members of the team’s coaching and development staff.

SINGLE GAME TICKETS FOR FIRST HALF OF SEASON ON SALE NOW

**Abbotsford, B.C. -** Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Josh Passolt, defencemen Derek Daschke and Michael Joyaux, as well as goaltender Jonathan Lemiuex to one-year AHL contracts ahead of the 2023-24 season.


Passolt, 27, spent the majority of the 2022-23 season with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones, ranking third on the team in goals (25) and seventh in points (47) over 69 games. The 6-0, 190-pound winger was recalled from loan by the Buffalo Sabres’ AHL affiliate Rochester Americans on April 15 before making his AHL debut the next day, in which he scored his first career AHL goal against Cleveland’s Jet Greaves. Passolt remained with Rochester for the 2023 postseason, skating in five Calder Cup Playoff games and recording one goal. A native of Hayward, Wisconsin, Passolt spent five seasons with the NCAA’s Western Michigan University (NCHC) and currently ranks tied for second all-time in school history with 166 games played.


Daschke, 25, completed his fifth and final NCAA season with the University of Minnesota-Duluth (NCHC) in 2022-23, ranking second among team defencemen in assists (14) and third in points (16) while playing in all of the Bulldogs’ 37 contests. At the conclusion of his collegiate season, the 6-2, 192-pound defender signed an ECHL contract with the Toledo Walleye, where he recorded seven points (one goal, six assists) over 10 regular season games and two assists over three postseason contests. The Troy, Michigan native also spent four seasons playing for the NCAA’s Miami University of Ohio (NCHC), where he served as captain during the 2021-22 collegiate campaign while leading his team in assists (24) and points (28).


Joyaux, 26, spent the entirety of his first professional campaign with the ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers in 2022-23, leading team defencemen in goals (nine), assists (32) and points (41) while playing in all 72 regular season games. The 5-10, 181-pound blueliner was named to the 2022-23 ECHL All-Rookie Team on April 12 before skating in all 16 of Newfoundland’s postseason games, recording seven points (two goals, five assists). A native of Bloomingdale, Illinois, Joyaux spent four seasons with the NCAA’s Western Michigan University (NCHC), recording 67 points (16 goals, 51 assists) and 64 penalty minutes over 120 collegiate contests.


Lemiuex, 22, is signing his first professional contract out of Concordia University (OUA), where he led the league’s goaltenders in goals-against average (1.98) and lead rookie goaltenders in wins (16) during the 2022-23 USports regular season. The 6’1, 185-pound netminder recorded three shutouts and a .933 save percentage for the Stingers this past season and posted a 4-2-0 record with two shutouts during the 2023 OUA Playoffs. A native of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Lemieux played five major junior seasons in the QMJHL with Val-d’Or, Saint John and Moncton, earning QMJHL Second Team All-Star honours in 2020-21.

CANUCKS SIGN FOUR PLAYERS TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACTS

**Abbotsford, B.C. –** The American Hockey League announced its 2023.24 regular season schedule on Wednesday, with the Abbotsford Canucks set to open the season on the road on Friday, October 13 against the Laval Rocket. 

 
Following two games against Laval, the Canucks will return to Abbotsford to host the Calgary Wranglers for two games, beginning with the home opener on Friday, October 20. It will be the first time the two teams face off against each other since the AHL’s Pacific Division Semifinals last season.

**Matchup Information:**

- Canadian Competition: Abbotsford will play a total of 20 games against Canadian opponents, facing off against the Manitoba Moose and Laval Rocket four times (two home, two away) while taking on rival Calgary Wranglers a total of 12 times (six home, six away). The season opener at Laval also marks the first time that the Canucks will begin a season against a Canadian opponent.

- Familiar Foes: The Canucks will take on a fellow Pacific Division rival a total of 64 times this season, consisting of eight games (four home, four away) against each of the Bakersfield Condors, Colorado Eagles, Henderson Silver Knights, Ontario Reign and reigning Western Conference Champion Coachella Valley Firebirds. They will also meet four times each (two home, two away) against the San Diego Gulls, San Jose Barracuda and Tucson Roadrunners.
 

**Season at a Glance:**


**Seven Days a Week:** Abbotsford will host at least one home game on every day of the week this season with 12 Saturday games leading the way. Friday (7) and Wednesday (6) trail behind, while Tuesday (5), Sunday (3), Thursday (2) and Monday (1) also feature on the 36-game home schedule. 
- All three Sunday home games will again feature a 4:00pm PT puck drop, while the lone Monday game falls on BC Family Day with an early puck drop at 2:00pm PT. 



**Home Cooking:** The Canucks longest homestand will occur in January, where the team will play a total of six consecutive games at Abbotsford Centre, beginning on Friday, January 12 against the Tucson Roadrunners and ending on Sunday, January 21 against the San Diego Gulls.



**Half & Half:** The Canucks will wrap up the first half of the season on Thursday, December 21 at home against the Ontario Reign, before the AHL’s holiday break. Abbotsford will also conclude the regular season at home on Saturday, April 20 against the Calgary Wranglers.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS ANNOUNCE 2023.24 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE

**Vancouver, B.C. - **Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that the Kalamazoo Wings have signed a one-year agreement to be the ECHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and AHL Abbotsford Canucks for the 2023.24 season.



"Securing a full time ECHL affiliation is something we have wanted to do for our players and the Abbotsford Canucks," said Allvin. "Giving our guys every opportunity to grow, improve and succeed on the ice Is extremely important to the hockey club. Having this agreement with Kalamazoo gives our team and our development staff another touchpoint in the long hard journey to becoming a pro hockey player."



"The goal for us is to try and develop players at all levels and having a direct pipeline to the ECHL is extremely important," said Ryan Johnson, General Manager Abbotsford Canucks and Assistant to the General Manager, Vancouver Canucks. "From day one we have talked about how we want to approach the game, our professionalism, our culture and using all available resources. Teaming up with Joel Martin and his staff in Kalamazoo is another key building block in our player development process and will only help make our organization stronger."

With this new agreement in place, the Wings will serve as a Canucks affiliate for the fourth time in franchise history. Vancouver and Kalamazoo first established a partnership from 1984 to 1987 while the K-Wings were members of the International Hockey League (IHL). 



Kalamazoo also served as an affiliate club for the Canucks organization from 2011 to 2015 and again from 2017 to 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the K-Wings suspended play for the entire 2020.21 ECHL season.



The K-Wings originally played in the IHL from 1974 through 1999 before joining the United Hockey League (UHL) from 2000 to 2006. The team then entered the newly re-established IHL from 2007 to 2009 before most recently joining the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) to start the 2009.10 season. 



Throughout their ECHL affiliate history with the Vancouver Canucks, Kalamazoo won two North Division Championships (2012 & 2014) and made four of six possible playoff appearances.



The club will continue to play in the Western Conference's Central Division in the upcoming 2023.24 season. The ECHL is comprised of 28 teams evenly spread out across four divisions (Central, Mountain, North, South) and two conferences (Eastern, Western).

The Kalamazoo Wings have signed a one-year agreement to be the ECHL affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and AHL Abbotsford Canucks for the 2023.24 season.

CANUCKS ANNOUNCE ECHL PARTNERSHIP WITH KALAMAZOO WINGS FOR 2023.24 SEASON

On July 5th, Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced that the club had signed forward Jermaine Loewen to a two-year contract through the end of the 2024-25 AHL season.
Loewen, 25, spent the entirety of the 2022-23 season with the Vegas Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate Henderson Silver Knights, leading the team with 84 penalty minutes over 51 games played.

We sat down with the Jamaican born forward to learn more about the newest member of the Abbotsford Canucks.

**What can Abbotsford fans expect from you this season?**

A physical player, I finish my checks, I bring energy. I’ve been an energy player for the last number of years, and even my time in junior. I’m hoping to translate that, and also a bit of skill and help guys on the third and fourth lines.

**Have you always played a physical style of hockey?**

I’ve always been known to be a physical player. I have a big body so my presence let’s me protect my teammates and I’m proud to be able to do that when the time is right.

**Tell us about your unique path to playing pro hockey.**

I’m not sure if many people know my story already, but I grew up in Jamaica until age five in an orphanage. My parents, from Manitoba, went over there for humanitarian aid. They saw me and they wanted to adopt me out of the orphanage. It was 21 months later and I moved to Arborg, Manitoba, that’s where my family is from. I lived there for a few years and started playing shinny hockey, as well as pond hockey back home. Then I had a friend one day tell me that I should try hockey. At that time I had only been in Canada for a couple of years, but I asked my parents if I could play hockey. It was foreign to me, then they told me I could play for one year.

I fell in love with the game. It all just seemed like something I wanted to accomplish and become the first Jamaican born player to be drafted into the NHL. It was a goal that I had set when I was 12 years old, and then I started playing hockey in Arborg and I progressed fairly well. The first year was pretty rough, I didn’t really know the game coming from Jamaica. I really had to progress my game as fast as I could, and then I got drafted by the Kamloops Blazers (WHL) where I played for five years. I was there for about 300 games, and captained them in my last year.

**How has your work ethic driven you to success in your career?**

Coming into hockey, I didn’t know what that journey was going to be like. I had a moment, an awakening, thinking it would be really cool to be the first Jamaican born player to get drafted (into the NHL) and to work as hard as I can. I feel like I thrive being the underdog, and my mind set is that “I’m not an underdog, I’m an overcomer”. First year in junior, I didn’t have any points and it was pretty rough. 16 years old, moved 2000 kilometers away from home, it was difficult. That was an up and down season for me, mostly down. I thought that this may not be the path for me, I went home and felt upset about my performances and my game because prior to that I had pretty good production. 

To have that moment, things then started to snowball for me in my later years, and then everything came together when I got drafted as an 19 year old. That’s just the up and down path I’ve been on. For me, resiliency is a big word and I like to tell younger kids that.

**How have your leadership qualities translated to the AHL?**

I learned a lot being a leader, I’ve had to with the help of my trainer and my agent. I always take room to become better and take criticism and say “how can I grow from that?”. That’s the kind of mindset you need to have as a leader. Seeing some of the leaders in Abbotsford, and obviously playing with Quinn (Schmiemann), I know what he brings, what other guys bring, and I’ve got to just be myself. Don’t need to do too much, just live my life and my habits will present themselves on the ice.

**You wrote a children’s book a few years ago, can you tell us about that experience?**

I wrote a children’s book almost three years ago. It was during Covid and the Black Lives Matter movement. There was a lot of racial tension in the United States. Seeing all of the stuff on the news, my agent approached me and said “why don’t we do a book so you can share your experiences and have it be tangible.” The book is called Ari’s Awful Day, and Ari is a black lion. Ari has his own issues and problems, and me as well, throughout my career I experienced bullying. This book represents what my life has been like, trying to fit in and overcoming that. I can use that book when my career is done and inspire people. It is a book that I co-authored with Thom Van Dycke, and I’m hoping I can do some more as my life and career goes on.

**What do you like to get up to in your spare time?**

I’m a bit of a nerd in this way but I love to read. I love self help books and studying/learning all of the time. Reading and sitting by the pool is my hanging out and having a good time, and then I also love to go fishing. Getting those opportunites with friends and I went fishing with my dad back in Manitoba. I’m pretty easy go lucky that way and I just enjoy any time I get to be outdoors.

**ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - ** Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Jermaine Loewen to a two-year contract through the end of the 2024-25 AHL season.


Loewen, 25, spent the entirety of the 2022-23 season with the Vegas Golden Knights’ AHL affiliate Henderson Silver Knights, leading the team with 84 penalty minutes over 51 games played. 


The 6-4, 234-pound winger has skated in 148 career AHL regular season games between Henderson and Chicago, recording 22 points (nine goals, 13 assists) and registering 285 penalty minutes. Loewen also played five seasons for the Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers, where he spent the entirety of his junior career and served as captain in 2018-19 during his overage campaign.


Born in Mandeville, Jamaica, Loewen became the first Jamaican-born player to be selected in an NHL Entry Draft when he was taken by the Dallas Stars as a seventh-round pick (199th overall) in 2018. Loewen began to play minor hockey at the age of 10 in his hometown of Arborg, Manitoba, just 11 years before earning his first professional contract with Chicago (AHL) in 2019.

CANUCKS SIGN LOEWEN TO TWO-YEAR AHL CONTRACT

ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward John Stevens to a two-year contract through the end of the 2024-25 AHL season.


“John is a great player and person,” said Johnson. “He personifies what we are as an organization. I am ecstatic to have him with us in Abbotsford for two more years.”


Stevens, 29, has spent the past two seasons with Abbotsford, ranking third in franchise history with 111 regular season games played since skating with the Canucks during the 2021-22 inaugural season. This past season, he recorded 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) over 43 regular season games and scored one goal over five Calder Cup Playoff games. Stevens also served as an alternate captain for the club during the 2022-23 season and is the club’s franchise leader in shorthanded goals (seven).


“I am extremely excited to be back in Abbotsford for another two seasons,” said Stevens. “The support we have received from this city since we moved here from Utica has been incredible. The fans here have made this one of the best playing atmospheres in the league. We have an amazing group here.”


The 6-3, 204-pound centre ranks tied for third in Abbotsford franchise history with 25 goals while ranking fourth in points (62) and fifth in assists (37). Stevens originally joined the Canucks organization when he was traded to Vancouver’s former AHL affiliate Utica Comets on Jan. 10, 2020 from Bridegport in exchange for future considerations.


A native of Sea Isle City, New Jersey, Stevens played four NCAA season with Northeastern University (HEA), capturing a Hockey East Championship with the Huskies in 2016. Over his professional career, he has skated in 276 regular season AHL games between Bridegport, Utica and Abbotsford, recording 113 points (47 goals, 66 assists) and registering 172 penalty minutes. He has also skated in 11 Calder Cup Playoff games, recording two points (one goal, one assist) and two penalty minutes.


The Abbotsford Canucks have signed forward John Stevens to a two-year contract extension through the end of the 2024-25 AHL season.

CANUCKS SIGN STEVENS TO TWO-YEAR AHL CONTRACT

**ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -** Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed defenceman Chad Nychuk to a one-year contract extension ahead of the 2023-24 season.


Nychuk, 22, split his first professional season between Abbotsford and the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings in 2022-23.


“Chad made a great adjustment to the pro game last season,” said Johnson. “We are excited to continue to work with him and help him develop within our organization.”


This past season, the 6-1, 194-pound defender skated in 13 games for the Canucks, leading Abbotsford rookie defencemen in assists (five). Nychuk made his AHL debut on Feb. 15 in Abbotsford’s 4-2 victory at Calgary on Feb. 15 and recorded his first career AHL point (an assist) on Feb. 24 at Colorado. He also skated in 36 ECHL contests for Kalamazoo, ranking second among Wings’ defencemen in points per game (0.58) while ranking tied for second in goals (four), assists (17) and points (21).


Originally acquired as an undrafted free agent, the Rossburn, Manitoba native spent four seasons with the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings before signing a one-year AHL contract for the 2022-23 season with Abbotsford on July 22, 2022.


Nychuk will join current Abbotsford Canucks defenceman Quinn Schmiemann and many other prospects at the Vancouver Canucks Development Camp being held at UBC from July 2-5.

CANUCKS SIGN NYCHUK TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACT EXTENSION

On May 18th, Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced that the club had signed major junior free agent forward Cooper Walker to a one-year AHL contract through the 2023-24 season. Walker joins Abbotsford from the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League.

We sat down with the 20 year old forward to learn more about the newest member of the Abbotsford Canucks.

**What excites you about making the next step to the AHL?**

It’s obviously everybody’s dream to play pro hockey, it’s been mine since I was a little kid. To make that step is a step closer to achieving my dream. I can’t wait, I’m excited and can’t wait to play in Abbotsford.

**What can you say about the level of your game right now?**

I think it was an awesome year for the team (Guelph) and myself, we had a great group of guys and a great coaching staff that really pushes everyone to be the best they can. The opportunity, to be an older guy in the league, helped me become the player that I was last season. It’s easy to be a leader on a team that has a lot of leaders, the other guys made it easy for me to lead the way, and I think that’s a big positive why we found success this season.

**What can Abbotsford fans expect from you next year?**

Hard work, I love to compete and battle. I take a lot of pride in being a defensive forward, shutting down the other team’s best players. Taking key faceoffs and being out there on the penalty kill, just doing whatever coach needs to win the games and nothing is better than winning. When you can contribute to that, it’s a big role.

**Can you talk about your family’s ties to the Canucks organization?**

Obviously I was not born yet when my dad played for the Canucks but he’s been involved when I got older and he’s had nothing but good things to say. Being able to head out to BC once in a while, whether to catch some games or see the guys at camp, everything I’ve heard is positive from the organization for both Vancouver and Abbotsford. I can’t wait to get out there and get going.

**What are you looking forward to about development camp?**

I’m excited to get out there and meet all of the guys and the staff. A lot of people have reached out over the last few weeks and it’ll be nice to put some faces to names and show them the hard work that I’ve been putting in over the summer and do what I can.

**What do you get up to in your spare time?**

I like to stay active, me and my buddies do a lot of roller blading, play some tennis and spikeball. Really just anything being outside and staying active. I also enjoy going up to the cottage with my family and taking some time off to relax, do some water sports. Other than that, just training.

**ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -** Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has traded forward Vincent Arseneau to the Providence Bruins in exchange for future considerations.

Arseneau, 31, spent the last two seasons skating for the Abbotsford Canucks, having recorded 21 points (13 goals, eight assists) and registering 137 penalty minutes over 77 AHL games with the club.

CANUCKS TRADE VINCENT ARSENEAU FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATIONS

Abbotsford Canucks’ goaltender Arturs Silovs lead his country to a historic bronze medal at the 2023 IIHF World Championships, the first ever medal at the tournament for Team Latvia.

Arturs Silovs was the lone representative from Abbotsford’s 2022-23 season to be selected to compete at the tournament in Tampere Finland, as well his hometown of Riga Latvia.

After coming as a relief to Latvian netminder Ivars Punnenovs in the opening game, Silovs never looked back after being named the starter. Silovs won 7 of the 9 games that he started, going 7-2 in that stretch. He racked up a .921 save percentage, played the most minutes of any goaltender in the tournament, and recorded a shut out.

After dropping the first two games, Latvia then rattled off five consecutive wins to finish third place in the competitive Group B. Four of those five victories were by a one-goal margin, and a pair of them requiring Overtime. 

Latvia’s time in the tournament was in jeopardy on the final day of action in the group stage, as they needed to beat undefeated group leaders, Switzerland. Off the back of a 28 save performance from Arturs, including several key saves in the final minutes, Latvia grabbed the game winning goal, sending the host country through to the quarter finals.

There, they faced Sweden and were playing their final game on home soil, where Silovs once again put up an impressive performance on the back end. His showing in the final eight included him stopping 40 shots as Latvia kept on dancing their way through to the semi finals.

After a semi-final defeat to Canada, Latvia were competing for their first ever medal at the championships against the USA. 

After turning aside 26 of the 29 American efforts through 60 minutes, the game was pushed to Overtime as the score read 3-3. On the first shot of the extra frame, Kristians Rubins scored the goal that will forever lay in Latvian history, finding the back of the net and securing Latvia’s first ever medal at the IIHF World Championships.

In front of over 11,000 fans, many who donned a Latvian sweater, the arena erupted as Latvia celebrated their accomplishment.

Following the conclusion of the gold medal contest, which was won by Team Canada, the IIHF announced Silovs as the tournament MVP. He became the fifth goalie to win the award since 1999, joining a list of Dennis Endras (Germany 2010), Viktor Fasth (Sweden 2011), Pekka Rinne (Finland 2014) and Juho Olkinuora (Finland 2022).

Arturs Silovs wins historic bronze medal, named IIHF Championship Tournament MVP

Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed major junior free agent forward Cooper Walker to a one-year AHL contract through the 2023-24 season. 

Walker joins Abbotsford from the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League.

Walker, 20, spent the entirety of his overage major junior season with Guelph in 2022-23, serving as the team’s captain and ranking third on the team with 21 goals. He reached OHL career highs in all major statistical categories while skating in 66 of the Storm’s 68 regular season games. During the 2023 OHL Playoffs, he ranked second among Guelph players with five points (two goals, three assists) while skating in all six of the team’s postseason games.

The 6-0, 174-pound centre skated in 179 regular season games during his major junior career, all of which he played for Guelph. During his three full seasons with the Storm, he recorded 94 points (38 goals, 56 assists) and 47 penalty minutes while recording six points (two goals, four assists) over 11 postseason games.

A native of Cambridge, Ontario, Cooper Walker is the son of Vancouver Canucks alumni Scott Walker. Scott was originally drafted by Vancouver in 1993 and spent 197 games of his 829-game NHL career with the Canucks as a player. He also served in multiple roles with the Canucks’ coaching and development departments, most recently as assistant coach with Vancouver during the 2021-22 season.

CANUCKS SIGN WALKER TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACT

**ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -** Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Marc Gatcomb to a one-year contract extension ahead of the 2023-24 season.


Gatcomb, 23, spent the majority of his first full professional with Abbotsford in 2022-23 in addition to a brief stint with the ECHL’s Kalamazoo Wings.


“Marc was one of our most improved players this year from start to finish,” said Johnson. “He is a big body that can skate and be a presence in every game. He’s a great pro and we are excited to keep working with him next season.”


This past season, the 6-2, 194-pound winger ranked third among Abbotsford rookies in both games played (45) and penalty minutes (24). Gatcomb recorded his first career AHL point (an assist) in the Canucks’ 6-1 victory at San Diego on Feb. 1 and recorded his first career AHL goal against Colorado’s Justus Annunen on Feb. 24. He also skated in all six of Abbotsford’s Calder Cup Playoff games, recording the first postseason goal of his professional career against Calgary’s Dustin Wolf in Game 1 of the Pacific Division Semi Final series on April 26. 


Originally acquired as an undrafted college free agent, the Woburn, Massachusetts native spent four NCAA seasons with the University of Connecticut (HEA) before signing a one-year AHL contract for the 2022-23 season with Abbotsford on April 2, 2022.

CANUCKS SIGN GATCOMB TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACT EXTENSION

**ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -** Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed defenceman Alex Kannok Leipert to a one-year contract extension ahead of the 2023-24 season.


Kannok Leipert, 22, has spent the entirety of his professional career to date with Abbotsford, currently ranking seventh all-time in games played (85) and fourth in penalty minutes (100) for the club since joining them for the 2021-22 inaugural season.


This past season, the 6-0, 200-pound defenceman ranked second on the team in plus-minus rating (+14) and fourth in penalty minutes (68) despite only skating in 44 regular season games. On April 15 he became the fourth player in Abbotsford Canucks history to record 100 penalty minutes. Kannok Leipert also recorded his first career AHL playoff point (an assist) while making his Calder Cup Playoff debut during Game 1 of the Pacific Division Semi Final series in the Canucks’ 3-2 overtime loss at Calgary on April 26.


“The last two seasons have been a blast,” said Kannok Leipert. “The city and our fans took this past season to the next level and I’m really looking forward to bringing that energy into the upcoming season. Coming back to the Fraser Valley for a seventh year in a row just feels right.”


In addition to spending his first two professional campaigns in Abbotsford, Kannok Leipert has also developed his skillset with the Vancouver Canucks in the club’s past two NHL training camps and 2022 Development Camp. His performance at the 2022 Young Stars Classic in Penticton, BC was also proof to management of his progress. “Alex has grown into a role with our team and taken a big responsibility in holding the standard of our environment each and every day,” noted Abbotsford GM Ryan Johnson. “I am very excited to have him continue on with the organization.”


Entering the 2023-24 campaign, the Regina, Saskatchewan native has now spent parts of his last seven competitive hockey seasons playing in the Fraser Valley. Kannok Leipert skated in 219 regular season games and 28 postseason games with the Langley-based Vancouver Giants (WHL) before joining the Canucks organization as a free agent on August 17, 2021.

CANUCKS SIGN KANNOK LEIPERT TO ONE-YEAR AHL CONTRACT EXTENSION

The Pacific Division Semi-Finals continued in Abbotsford on Friday night, as the Canucks squared off with the Calgary Wranglers in Game 4 from the Abbotsford Centre. Trailing 2-1 in the Best-Of-Five series, Abbotsford needed a win or else Calgary would advance to the divison final.

Michael Regush returned to the Abbotsford line up, slotting in at centre between Arshdeep Bains and Danila Klimovich. Spencer Martin was between the pipes once again, marking his first time making consecutive starts since early March. Dustin Wolf made his fourth start of the series for Calgary.

Abbotsford would jump out of the gates and get off to a dream start, coming from talisman Nils Höglander. Just over two minutes in, Jack Rathbone rattled the puck off of the cross bar from the left faceoff circle in front of Wolf. The puck fell to Höglander who collected the puck from mid air before burying the puck past a sprawling Wolf to open the scoring. 

The Swede’s third goal of the playoffs and first of the series came 2:18 into the contest.

Abbotsford continued their pressure, but Calgary would later equalize against the run of play. Cole Schwindt was sitting in the faceoff circle on the man advantage when Connor Zary fed him the puck. Schwindt squeaked the puck between Martin and the post, levelling the game at 12:51 of the first period.

Schwindt’s first of the series would send the two sides into the locker rooms tied at 1-1, with Abbotsford outshooting Calgary 12-8 at the first intermission.

It would take some time, but the Canucks would regain their lead late in the second period, as Christian Wolanin and Zach Giuttari broke forward. The two blueliners showed some quick passing as they crossed the Calgary blue line, before Wolanin slid the puck over to Tristen Nielsen along the boards.

Nielsen would fire the puck first time and just beat a sliding Wolf to the near post. Nielsen’s second goal of the series came with 4:27 remaining in the middle frame, giving Abbotsford the 2-1 lead after 40 minutes. Once again the Canucks outshot the Wranglers in the period, leading the total shot count 19-14 at the second intermission.

For the second time in as many games, the Wranglers would grab the first goal of the third period, this time levelling the game at 2-2. Off of a quick face off win, Ilya Solvyov fired a shot that beat Spencer Martin, and setting up an exciting final 11:31of the third period.

Just over four minutes later, Adam Klapka put the Wranglers ahead as a mad scramble occurred in front of Martin’s crease. Through a maze of bodies, the puck trickled into the Abbotsford goal, making it a 3-2 Wranglers lead with 7:19 remaining in the contest.

Klapka’s goal would turn out to be the goal to push Calgary over the edge, as the Canucks’ couldn’t find an equalizier. Calgary would wind up taking the game 3-2, eliminating Abbotsford from the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Adam Klapka’s goal was his second of the series, with the first coming in Game 1. Dustin Wolf stopped 23 of the 25 Abbotsford efforts on the night, while Spencer Martin denied 21 of Calgary’s 24 shots.

With the result, Calgary advances on to the Pacific Division Final where they will face Coachella Valley Firebirds. Abbotsford’s historic second season came to a close, falling 3-1 in the Best-Of-Five series.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS SEASON COMES TO AN END IN 3-2 DEFEAT TO CALGARY

The Abbotsford Canucks are preparing for a pivotal game four as they continue their Pacific Division Semi-Final series against the Calgary Wranglers on Friday night from Abbotsford Centre. 

Currently trailing 2-1 in the best-of-five series, game four will get underway at 7:00pm PST on Friday night, with fans able to follow along on AHLTV, as well as on the radio with Sportsnet 650.

Games one and two ended in sudden death heartbreak for the Canucks as they fell 3-2 and 4-3 in overtime with the deciding goals coming from Jakob Pelletier and Matthew Phillips respectively. As the series shifted back to Abbotsford, the Canucks needed three consecutive wins to keep their season alive.

Game three got the Canucks back on track, as they handed the Wranglers their first loss of the post season in a 3-2 regulation victory. Goals from Linus Karlsson, Christian Wolanin and eventually the game winner from Kyle Rau, set up Friday’s Game 4 on home ice.

Christian Wolanin, the winner of the AHL’s Most Outstanding Defenceman Award, is tied for 10th in the league for playoff scoring by a defenceman with 4 (1G, 3A). Wolanin picked up a pair of points in Game 3, as did Arshdeep Bains in Game 2 (2G). 

Bains’ two goal performance in Calgary has him tied for the most goals scored by a rookie in the playoffs, with four other Abbotsford rookies also having notched a goal in the 2023 post season (Karlsson, Räty, Sasson, Gatcomb). Five rookies grabbing a goal is the most by a single team in the playoffs to date, with Linus Karlsson leading all AHL rookies in shots with 17 through five games.

Spencer Martin, who made 25 saves in Game 3, leads the AHL in save percentage with .943%. Martin, who is 2-1 in the playoffs this year, is also second in Goals Against Average with 1.57, and is one of seven goaltenders to have recorded a shutout in the 2023 playoffs.

The Abbotsford Canucks host the Calgary Wranglers in Game 4 of the Second Round of the Calder Cup Playoffs on Friday night at Abbotsford Centre.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS VS CALGARY WRANGLERS GAME 4 PREVIEW

The Pacific Division Semi-Finals shifted to the Abbotsford Centre on Wednesday night for Game 3 between the Abbotsford Canucks and the Calgary Wranglers.

Following a Matthew Phillips overtime winner in Game 2, Abbotsford came into the mid-week contest trailing 2-0 in the best-of-five series. Noah Juulsen returned to the lineup in place of Alex Kannok Leipert, while Spencer Martin took over from Arturs Silovs in net. Dustin Wolf would make his third start of the series for Calgary.

It would be the Wranglers who got out to the quicker start, as less than five minutes into the game, Jeremie Poirier would open the scoring. A bouncing puck was up for grabs in between the faceoff circles in front of Martin, as a Poirier wrist shot beat Martin, giving Calgary the early lead.

Poirier’s goal would be the difference maker for just over five minutes, as Christian Wolanin and Nils Höglander were setting up on the man advantage. Höglander threw the puck towards goal from the boards, with Linus Karlsson in front. Abbotsford’s Rookie of the Year steered the puck past Wolf from his knees to level the game at 1-1 at the midway point of the frame.

Abbotsford would see out the remaining half of the period and head into the locker room level at one. The Canucks narrowly outshot the Wranglers 12-11 in the opening 20 minutes, while going one-for-two on the man advantage.

Just as quickly as Calgary opened the scoring in the first, Abbotsford took the lead early in the second. Christian Wolanin slid the puck from the blue line towards Wolf, in search of a deflection. He would end up getting one from a stray Wranglers stick, tipping the puck over the shoulder of the unsuspecting Wolf. 

Jack Rathbone thought he had doubled the Canucks’ lead on a five-on-three, but after rattling the post, he collected the puck again and wired it off the cross bar. The goal light briefly turned on, but was quickly overturned and called no-goal.

Wolanin’s go-ahead goal was the lone scoring action of the second period, setting the hosts up with a 2-1 lead after two periods of play. Outshooting Calgary 9-7 in the middle frame, Abbotsford lead the shot count 21-18 as the two sides broke for the locker rooms.

Kyle Rau would jump on the scoring train for Abbotsford, as he intercepted an stretching Wranglers pass in the neutral zone which fell to Tristen Nielsen. Nielsen brought the puck into the Calgary zone before dropping it to Rau, who fired a slapshot under the arm of Wolf. Rau’s first goal of this season’s playoffs came 1:41 into the third period, giving Abbotsford a 3-1 lead.

Similar to the second game of the series, Calgary wouldn’t roll over easily in the third period. Nick DeSimone brought the Wranglers within one with a one-time effort from the right faceoff circle, beating Martin with 11 minutes remaining in the third.

However, DeSimone’s goal would be as close as Calgary would get in this one, with the Canucks holding on and taking game three 3-2. 

Kyle Rau’s sixth career AHL playoff goal would be turn out to be the game winner, while also picking up an assist. Christian Wolanin notched a goal and an assist as well, while Spencer Martin stopped 25 of the 27 Calgary shots he faced. Dustin Wolf turned aside 27 of Abbotsford’s 30 attempts on the night.

The Abbotsford Canucks defeated the Calgary Wranglers 3-2 in Game 3 of the Round 2 on Wednesday night at Abbotsford Centre.

KYLE RAU SCORES GAME WINNING GOAL AS CANUCKS HOLD ON TO 3-2 VICTORY OVER CALGARY

The Abbotsford Canucks are returning to the Abbotsford Centre to continue their best-of-five match up with the league-leading Calgary Wranglers. Last week Abbotsford fell to the Wranglers in overtime in both of the first two games at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The game one of round two saw Marc Gatcomb net his first career playoff goal, with Aatu Räty sending the game to overtime late in the third period.  
 
Game one was won by Calgary’s Jakob Pelletier halfway through overtime, joining Dryden Hunt and Adam Klapka on the scoreboard. 
 
Game two saw the return of Calgary’s Matthew Phillips who had been ejected from game one in the first period. With the game heading to overtime once again, after efforts from Calgary’s Clark Bishop, Ben Jones and Dryden Hunt, Phillips got his redemption, scoring the game-winner for Calgary seven minutes into the extra period. Despite the loss, Abbotsford’s Arshdeep Bains scored two short-handed goals within the same penalty kill, and Tristen Nielsen netted the only goal of the second period.  
 
After the past two games in Calgary, Arshdeep Bains has headed straight to the top of the leaderboard for shorthanded goals with two. Bains has also reclaimed the spot he held in the regular season as the leading rookie in shooting percentage. Both Alex Kannok Leipert and Matt Alfaro returned to the lineup in Calgary, each recording a helper and their first career playoff points. Nils Höglander, Arshdeep Bains, Justin Dowling, and Kyle Rau all top Abbotsford’s leaderboard in scoring. 
 
Calgary’s Dryden Hunt recorded his first two career post-season points against Abbotsford, opening the scoring in game one and scoring the equalizer in game two. The BC native recorded 15 points in 17 games with Calgary in the regular season after being traded from Toronto mid-season. Nick DeSimone, who is making his fifth Calder Cup Playoffs appearance has already recorded four points in Calgary’s first and only two games of the post-season so far.

Abbotsford Canucks vs Calgary Wranglers Game 3 Preview

**ABBOTSFORD, B.C. -** The Abbotsford Canucks announced today that the Abbotsford Tech District (ATD) has purchased 200 tickets to Game three of the team's current playoff series against the Calgary Wranglers.


These tickets have been purchased through the team’s Corporate partnership program that sees companies provide tickets for youth focused not for profit entities throughout Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley. Youth focused community groups that have participated in the program to date include local organizations such as KidSport Abbotsford, Kids Play Abbotsford and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley.

Abbotsford Tech District Donates 200 Game 3 Tickets to Youth in Abbotsford and Fraser Valley 

For the second time in three nights, the Abbotsford Canucks took to the ice at the Scotiabank Saddledome for Game 2 of the Second Round of the Calder Cup Playoffs on Friday night.

Filip Johansson slotted in alongside Jett Woo to make his AHL debut, while Matt Alfaro returned to the lineup at left wing alongside Chase Wouters and Marc Gatcomb. Arturs Silovs returned to the Abbotsford net for the first time since the series clinching performance in game 2 against Bakersfield, while league MVP Dustin Wolf was between the pipes for Calgary.

The puck was dropped and very soon after, the gloves were too. A chippy opening few minutes resulted in numerous powerplay chances, with Linus Karlsson coming the closest to opening the scoring as he batted a puck out of mid air just wide.

Jeremie Poirier had a powerplay effort rattle off the bar before Silovs slid across to keep the puck out and away from any pursuing Wranglers halfway through the first. However less than a minute later, Calgary would be able to bury a Kevin Rooney chance. With Silovs making the initial stop on Rooney, Clark Bishop was on the doorstep to jam home his first of the playoffs, and the game’s first goal.

It seemed as though Bishop’s tally would be the only goal of the opening frame as the period entered it’s final two minutes. With Abbotsford on the penalty kill and in their own zone, Arsh Bains sprang forward with Christian Wolanin on a two-on-one. Bains took the puck all the way and wired it over Wolf’s glove for the short handed equalizer.

Bains’ first career AHL post season goal was quickly followed up by an encore, as 55 seconds later, Matt Alfaro sets up Bains alone in front of Wolf. Bains shifted the puck to his forehand, then to his back hand, then back to his forehand, sending Wolf sliding the other direction. Bains slipped the puck into the bottom corner, and had given Abbotsford it’s first lead of the series.

Bains’ double came with 1:30 and :35 remaining in the first period, both on the same penalty kill. The Canucks took that sudden shift of momentum into the locker room for the first intermission, with a 2-1 lead. The two sides were level on the shot count with 12 a piece.

Arturs Silovs was the busier of the two netminders in the second period, pulling off saves through several flurries in front of his crease. With the netminder doing his part, Abbotsford would soon double their advantage thanks to Tristen Nielsen. A wayward bounce off of Justin Dowling’s leg sent Tristen Nielsen through on goal, all alone as he headed towards Wolf.

He collected the puck and roofed it over Wolf, having it snap off the back cage and come back out. Immediately the referee signalled that the puck went in, and Nielsen made it three unanswered for Abbotsford as they broke for the second intermission. 

37 seconds into the third period, Calgary would grab one back as Ben Jones jumped on a loose puck that bounced off the wall in front of Silovs. Jones reacted quickly and steered the puck into the net for his first goal of the series.
Calgary would equalize five minutes later when Dryden Hunt finished off his second of the series. On the man advantage, Matthew Phillips set up Hunt in front of the goal, who levelled the game up at 3 with 14 minutes remaining.

Silovs would make some key stops in the final minutes and would send the game, for the second consecutive contest, to overtime. 

An evenly fought overtime period ended via the stick of Matthew Phillips at the 7:49 mark. A wrist shot from the right faceoff circle beat Silovs through traffic, giving Calgary the 4-3 win as well as the 2-0 series lead.

Arsh Bains leads the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs in short handed goals, which helped earn him third star on the night. Silovs stopped 38 of the 42 Calgary shots he faced, while Wolf turned aside 24 of Abbotsford’s 27 shots on the night.

The Abbotsford Canucks fell 4-3 in Overtime in Game 2 of Round 2 to the Calgary Wranglers on Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Following their 3-2 overtime defeat in Game 1, the Abbotsford Canucks are back in action on Friday night in Game 2 of the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs against the Calgary Wranglers. The puck drops at 6:00pm PST from the Scotiabank Saddledome, with the broadcast available on AHLTV and the radio feed on Sportsnet 650.

Game 1 saw the Wranglers hold a 1-0 score line for most of the game, before goals from Marc Gatcomb and Aatu Räty helped force overtime following a second Calgary goal from Adam Klapka. More than halfway through the overtime period, Jakob Pelletier scored the game winner, giving Calgary the 1-0 series lead.

Game 2 will be the second and final game of the series in Calgary, with the series shifting to Abbotsford for Game 3, as well as Games 4 and 5 if necessary.

Spencer Martin and Dustin Wolf started in goal in Game 1 for Abbotsford and Calgary respectively, and each made 37 saves on the night. Wolf, the newly named AHL MVP, denied Abbotsford of some highly dangerous scoring opportunities, while Spencer Martin made a diving save late in the third to keep the Canucks’ deficit at just one.

Jack Rathbone is tied for the lead league in shots on goal this post season with 12, while Linus Karlsson also cracks the top 10 with 10 shots of his own. Nils Höglander leads Abbotsford in points in the post season (2G, 2A), while Martin is tied for 4th in the league for save percentage (.951%).

Calgary, who received the first round bye for finishing first in the Pacific Division, have played just one game in the last 11 days, which was Wednesday’s Game 1. The two teams faced off 12 times during the regular season, and is the only possible all-Canadian match up of the entire AHL post season.

Jakob Pelletier hadn’t played in an AHL game for Calgary since February 2nd before featuring in the Wranglers final two games of the regular season in Abbotsford on April 14th and 15th. In between that span, he put up seven points (3G, 4A) with the Calgary Flames.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS VS CALGARY WRANGLERS GAME 2 PREVIEW

The Abbotsford Canucks continued their quest for the Calder Cup with their first game of the second round against the Calgary Wranglers on Wednesday night. The contest took place at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Alberta, and began the best-of-five series between the two sides, who had already met 12 times throughout the regular season.

Pulling into the Abbotsford lineup was Alex Kannok Leipert, who made his AHL playoff debut on the evening. In between the pipes for Abbotsford was Spencer Martin, who’s last start came in the 3-0 shut out against Bakersfield in the opening game of the playoffs seven days ago. For Calgary, it would be the league MVP who started in goal. Dustin Wolf, alongside the rest of his Wranglers teammates, were beginning their 2022/23 playoff journey and playing in their first game in 11 days.

Abbotsford almost got off to the dream start, as Tristen Nielsen was denied on the doorstep by Wolf in the opening four minutes. A sprawling Calgary netminder spun around and kept the puck out which was trickling behind him.

It would take six minutes for Martin to get his first taste of rubber, with the guests outshooting the Wranglers 6-1 in the early goings. Following a spearing penalty to Calgary’s Matthew Phillips, who also received a game misconduct, Abbotsford were given a five minute man advantage halfway through the frame. 

After killing off the penalty, Calgary soon grabbed the first goal of the series, coming off of a bizarre bounce from an Abbotsford stick. The goal came with 6:41 remaining in the frame, and was credited to Dryden Hunt for his first post-season goal in his AHL playoff debut.

Hunt’s goal would be the lone tally of the first period, with the two sides heading back into the locker rooms with the Wranglers holding a 1-0 lead. The Canucks outshot Calgary 16-14 in the opening frame, with Wolf keeping his side in front.

The second period came and went with nobody finding the score sheet, despite Abbotsford once again outshooting Calgary. Both sides hadn’t converted on their two respective powerplay chances, and Dustin Wolf stopping all 28 shots through 40 minutes.

That streak for Wolf would be snapped less than two minutes into the third period, as Alex Kannok Leipert let fly a low shot from the point with traffic in front. Wolf stopped the effort with his pad, but the rebound fell straight to Marc Gatcomb who jammed home the equalizer.

Gatcomb’s first career AHL playoff goal came 1:35 into the third period, and set up an exciting finish in game 1.

Just before the midway point of the third period, Calgary would regain the lead. Adam Klapka brought the puck across the blue line and had his initial shot stopped by Kannok Leipert, before grabbing the rebound and putting the Wranglers back in the lead.

With time dwindling down, Abbotsford still trailed by one. Arsh Bains did well to keep the puck in at the Wranglers blue line, before Aatu Räty collected it in between the circles. His wrist shot beat Wolf, and pinged off the underside of the cross bar before it hit the back of the net. 

Räty’s first post season goal as a Canuck came with 4:50 remaining, and would be the goal to set up overtime between the two sides.

A back and forth Overtime period ended with Jakob Pelletier as he squirmed his way into the Abbotsford zone before sending a wrist shot towards Martin. The puck bounced in off of the far post, sealing the 3-2 Overtime victory for Calgary, giving the hosts the 1-0 lead in the series.

Marc Gatcomb and Alex Kannok Leipert both picked up their first career AHL post season point, while Justin Dowling lead the game with seven shots on goal in his home town. Dustin Wolf made 37 saves on the 39 shots he faced, while Spencer Martin stopped 37 of the 40 Calgary efforts that came his way.

Canucks rally back but fall 3-2 in Overtime to Calgary in Game 1

**Calgary, AB – **The Abbotsford Canucks are headed to round 2 of the Calder Cup Playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Facing the Calgary Wranglers in a best of five series, the Canucks are heading across the Rockies for game one on April 26th and game two on April 28th at Scotiabank Saddledome.  
 
Abbotsford is coming off a two-game sweep against the Bakersfield Condors who knocked them out of the playoffs last year in the first round. The Calgary Wranglers, who clinched both the Pacific division title and the regular season title bypassed the first round of the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs, heading straight to round two. 
 
Nils Höglander leads Abbotsford in scoring after round one with four points (2-2-4). AHL veteran Kyle Rau leads the team in assists with three. Rau is playing in his fourth playoff campaign and first with Abbotsford.  
 
After just two games in their post-season, Abbotsford’s players are spread all throughout the league’s leaderboards.  
 
Abbotsford’s Nils Höglander scored the game winning goal in both of Abbotsford’s round one matchups, leading the league. Max Sasson is also sitting at the top of the league for a different category, rookie shooting percentage, with 50%. Despite this being a small stat, Sasson’s goal was a pivotal insurance goal in the opening matchup of round 1 against Bakersfield.  
 
Jack Rathbone leads all defencemen in shots with 11 and is tied for the lead in goals with 2. 
 
While the Calgary Wranglers are in their inaugural season, the Flames’ former affiliate the Stockton Heat had a solid playoff run last season.  
 
The Stockton Heat roster featured key Wranglers players including the 2023 AHL’s first All-Star team’s Matthew Phillips and 2023 AHL MVP Dustin Wolf.  
 
Finishing first in the Pacific Division, the Stockton Heat bypassed the first round of the 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs, knocking out the Bakersfield Condors in the second round. The Heat made it all the way to the Western Conference Finals, ultimately losing to the Chicago Wolves in a 3-0 shutout in game 6. Netminder Dustin Wolf started all 13 of Stockton’s playoff games recording a 0.929 save percentage and three shutouts.  
 
Matthew Phillips, Jakob Pelletier, and Walker Duehr were the top three scorers still active in the Flames organization, with 8,7, and 6 points respectively.

Abbotsford Canucks vs Calgary Wranglers Game 1 Preview

**ABBOTSFORD, B.C. - ** Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed goaltender Marco Costantini to an amateur try out agreement.


Costantini, 20, joins Abbotsford after completing his overage year of major junior in the Ontario Hockey League, where he split the 2022-23 campaign between Hamilton and Kitchener. He reached a new OHL career high in games played (47) while leading the Kitchener Rangers in all major goaltending categories with a 23-16-5 record.


The 6’1, 185 lb. netminder also started in all nine of Kitchener’s postseason games during the 2023 OHL Playoffs, helping the eighth-seeded Rangers sweep the first-seeded Windsor Spitfires 4-0 in the opening round.


A native of Hamilton, Ontario, Costantini spent parts of three seasons playing for his hometown Hamilton Bulldogs and led them to an OHL Championship in 2021-22. He posted a 16-2-1 postseason record over 19 playoff games on his way to capturing the J. Ross Robertson Cup. He also led the Ontario Hockey League in both goals-against average (2.32) and save percentage (.917) during the 2021-22 regular season.

CALDER CUP PLAYOFF TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Following Wednesday’s victory, the Abbotsford Canucks hosted the Bakersfield Condors on Friday night with a chance to advance to the second round of the 2022/23 Calder Cup playoffs. 

Following his goal in game 1, Max “Big Game” Sasson centered Nils Höglander and Linus Karlsson to start game two. The lone change came between the pipes for Abbotsford, as Spencer Martin made way for Arturs Silovs in the Abbotsford goal. Calvin Pickard started in the Condors goal for the second time this series.

In front of a sold out crowd at Abbotsford Centre, the home side dominated the opening 20 minutes, but in similar fashion to Wednesday, couldn’t beat Pickard. With three powerplay chances and 16 shots, Abbotsford were laying on the pressure in the first period. Those chances couldn’t be converted into anything scratching the score sheet, and the two teams were sent to the locker rooms in a scoreless tie.

It would take just over two minutes into the middle frame, but that scoreless tie would soon be broken. Jack Rathbone, who scored the final goal of game 1, opened the scoring in game 2 for the Canucks.

Linus Karlsson and Justin Dowling connected down low by Pickard’s goal, before sliding the puck back to Rathbone at the point. The blueliner walked in and wired the puck over the pad of the Condors netminder, giving Abbotsford the 1-0 lead early in the frame.

The scoring didn’t stop there for the Canucks, this time it was another defenceman who found the back of the net. Nils Höglander threaded the puck through a maze of bodies to find a streaking Brady Keeper at the back post, burying the puck past Pickard for the second time in the middle period.

Keeper’s sliding effort came with seven minutes remaining in the second, and was his first AHL playoff goal of his career. However Bakersfield would grab one back late in the frame, as James Hamblin converted on the man advantage inside the final two minutes to cut Abbotsford’s lead in half.

Hamblin’s tally was the final scoring action of the second period, which concluded with Abbotsford holding a 2-1 lead, while outshooting the Condors 22-20.

The Condors jumped out to start the third, levelling the game up at 2-2 in the opening few minutes. Raphael Lavoie, who lead Bakersfield in goals in the regular season, was able to beat Silovs to open his post season account. 

Four minutes later, Abbotsford would regain the lead. Nils Höglander sat and waited in the slot for a Tristen Nielsen pass, before he ripped the puck past Pickard before he could get set up for the effort. Höglander’s second of the playoffs came with 12 minutes remaining, but would prove to be the game and series winning goal.

A John Stevens empty net goal in the final minute sealed the game, as Abbotsford advanced to the second round with a 4-2 victory over Bakersfield. 

Nils Höglander had his second consecutive multi-point night, while 11 different Canucks found the scoresheet. Calvin Pickard stopped 29 of the 32 efforts he faced, while Silovs turned aside 26 of the 28 Condors attempts on the evening.

The Abbotsford Canucks are headed to game two of the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs after their first ever post-season victory against the Bakersfield Condors.  

Game one saw Martin collect his first career playoff win with a 3-0 shutout, making a total of 21 saves. Nils Höglander opened the scoring for Abbotsford at the start of the second period, with goals from newcomer Max Sasson and blueliner Jack Rathbone to follow.  

Max Sasson, who played just seven games with Abbotsford before the start of playoffs is finding his rhythm in professional hockey, playing between Nils Höglander and Kyle Rau on the second line. Sasson who joined the Canucks from Western Michigan University put up 64 points across 75 games with the Broncos. In his second NCAA season alone, he registered 1.1 points per game, with 42 points in 38 games. 

Returning from Vancouver, blue liners Noah Juulsen and Christian Wolanin each collected an assist in game one.  
Noah Juulsen is making his third AHL playoff appearance and second with Abbotsford while Wolanin is seeing his second AHL post-season after a five-game stint with the Ontario Reign last season.  

Despite being shutout in game one, Bakersfield is the more experienced team in the post-season, with four playoff appearances, earning two division titles. James Hamblin and Raphael Lavoie both managed four shots on net in game one. Lavoie led Bakersfield in shots in the regular season with 184, managing third in points for Bakersfield (25-20-45).  

Top of the scoreboard for the regular season was Seth Griffith, the only Condor to take the ice in all 72 games, posting a total of 60 points (17-43-60). Net minder Calvin Pickard who got the nod in game one, made 27 saves for a 0.9 save percentage. Pickard cracked the top 10 among qualified goalies for save percentage in the regular season, matching his fellow Condors’ goalie Olivier Rodrigue with 0.912%.

Abbotsford has received Filip Johansson on loan from Frolunda of the SHL now that his season has ended. The 23-year old blueliner put up 21 points in his latest season in Sweden. 

Lead Bakersfield scorer Seth Griffith is making his eight post-season appearance, putting up 41 points in a total of 46 playoff games (13-28-41).

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS VS BAKERSFIELD CONDORS GAME 2 PREVIEW

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their quest for the Calder Cup on Wednesday night with Game 1 of the Opening Round of the playoffs against the Bakersfield Condors.

In a rematch of last year’s opening round, nine players from Abbotsford’s 2022 playoff lineup prepared to do battle at the Abbotsford Centre. Christian Wolanin and Noah Juulsen returned to the Abbotsford lineup following their reassignment from Vancouver earlier in the week, while Danila Klimovich looked to continue on his four-game scoring streak. Spencer Martin started in goal for the Canucks, while Calvin Pickard got the nod from Head Coach Colin Chaulk to tend the Bakersfield goal.

Less than seven minutes into the contest, James Hamblin thought he had opened the scoring for Bakersfield. After initially being called a goal, it would soon be overturned due to a kicking motion. A tightly fought opening period would come to a scoreless close, with Abbotsford holding the slight edge in the shot count 6-5.

One Tanner Olsen Band performance later, the two teams emerged from the locker rooms to start off the second period.

Abbotsford came into the second period searching for the go ahead goal, and it didn’t take long to find it. Nils Höglander brought the puck through the neutral zone and barreled down towards Pickard. The Condors goaltender turned aside the initial effort, but wasn’t quick enough to deny Max Sasson on the doorstep with the rebound.

Sasson lifted the puck over the sprawling netminder for his second career professional goal and first in his short post-season career. The tally came 1:28 into the second period, and sent the white rally towels flying at Abbotsford Centre.

Three and a half minutes later, he did it again.

Nils Höglander slipped the puck from behind the Condors goal to Kyle Rau, who saucered it over to Sasson across the crease. Sasson’s snapshot finish doubled Abbotsford’s advantage as the puck beat Pickard to the near post. 

Sasson had scored his third AHL goal in less than five combined periods, going back to his last regular season game on April 15th against Calgary. More importantly, he set the Canucks up with a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. After the middle frame, Abbotsford held the two goal lead, and had outshot the Condors 18-12.

An even back and forth third period seemed to be running smoothly and uninterrupted on the score sheet, until Abbotsford were sent to the powerplay after a Seth Griffith cross check. Jack Rathbone fired home his first AHL playoff goal from the right faceoff circle, beating the glove of Pickard with 5:32 remaining in the contest.

Rathbone’s tally would seal the 3-0 victory for Abbotsford, setting a landmark victory as the team’s first every playoff win. 

Spencer Martin stopped all 21 shots, earning first star in his first AHL playoff home game, as well as his first post-season shut out. Christian Wolanin and Justin Dowling picked up an assist each, with Höglander and Rau each picking up two helpers. Max Sasson and Jack Rathbone scored the three goals, while Calvin Pickard stopped 27 of the 30 Abbotsford shots he saw.

The Abbotsford Canucks begin their quest for the Calder Cup on Wednesday night, kicking off their best of three series with the Bakersfield Condors at 7:00pm from Abbotsford Centre. In a rematch of last year’s first round playoff series, the Canucks will look to best their Californian rivals on home ice this time around.

Abbotsford is the fourth seed in the Pacific Division this year, finishing with a 40-25-3-4 record and 87 points. Bakersfield wound up in fifth place in the division, holding a 37-31-2-2 record with 78 points. 

In a short four game season series, the Canucks took three out of four games. It has been some time since the Condors visited Abbotsford Centre, with their lone visit taking place in a pair of Canucks’ victories on November 29th and 30th 2022.

The Canucks’ took the first match up with a 3-2 comeback Overtime victory thanks to Linus Karlsson grabbing his first AHL goal to secure the full two points back on October 15th in Bakersfield. Abbotsford followed that performance up with a pair of 6-3 and 4-3 wins featuring four assists by Christian Wolanin and three points by Kyle Rau, in a mid-week series in November. Finally, Bakersfield grabbed their lone win over Abbotsford on March 22nd in a 3-1 performance in California.

Bakersfield wrapped up the regular season with the fifth best record in the final 10 games of the season across the AHL, going 7-3-0-0. Since that game in Bakersfield, the Canucks went 5-3-1 including three single goal losses. The team wrapped up with an impressive showing in a three-game series against the league leading Calgary Wranglers, where the Wranglers dropped consecutive games in regulation for the first time in almost two months.

Raphael Lavoie leads the Condors in goals with 25, six more than second place Noah Philp and former Abbotsford Canuck Justin Bailey. Seth Griffith’s 43 assists and 60 points is also a team lead, while newly acquired Cam Dineen has put up 12 points in his 19 games as a Condor from the blue line.

Calvin Pickard and Olivier Rodrigue will be the Condors goaltending duo, with the pair playing in 67 of the Condors 72 games this regular season. The two netminders have a combined record of 37-26-3, and an average save percentage of 0.912.

For the Canucks, Christian Wolanin tops the roster in terms of assists (49) and points (55). His 49 helpers is the fifth most in the AHL and most by a defenceman, as well as the AHL lead in points amongst blueliners. Rookie Linus Karlsson was the lone Canuck to play in all 72 regular season games, and lead the squad in goals with 24.

Arturs Silovs and Spencer Martin will lead the charge in net for Abbotsford, with the two featuring in 60 games this season. The pair have 33 combined wins, with an average save percentage of 0.913 and goals against average of 2.43.

There are a total of nine players who featured in last season’s playoff clash for Abbotsford are expected to be on the playoff roster for 2022/23 (Jack Rathbone, John Stevens, Vincent Arseneau, Chase Wouters, Jett Woo, Matt Alfaro, Noah Juulsen, Justin Dowling and Spencer Martin).

On Saturday, the Abbotsford Canucks announced the winners of their fan voted player awards. Arturs Silovs won Most Valuable Player, Jack Rathbone won Fan Favourite, Jett Woo won Unsung Hero, Linus Karlsson won Rookie of the Year, and Chase Wouters won Man of the Year.

Bakersfield has received help on the blue line, with Ryan Murray and Jason Demers both being returned on loan by Edmonton.

Abbotsford Canucks vs Bakersfield Condors Game 1 Preview

**Abbotsford, B.C. -** The Abbotsford Canucks are proud to announce that Christian Wolanin has become the first player in franchise history to win the coveted Eddie Shore Award as the American Hockey League’s outstanding defenceman for 2022-23.


Wolanin, 28, led all AHL defencemen in points (55) and assists (49) despite having not played for Abbotsford since being recalled to Vancouver on Feb. 18. His 49 assists over 49 games played this season stand as both the single-season and all-time record in assists for Abbotsford; as does his 13-game point streak between Nov. 10 to Dec. 9 in which he recorded 22 points (three goals, 19 assists).


The 6’2, 185 lb. defenceman was Abbotsford’s lone representative at the 2023 AHL All-Star Classic in Laval, QC, which was the second AHL All-Star Game selection of his career. Wolanin’s season has also been highlighted by multiple milestones such as his 100th career AHL game, in which he recorded his 50th career AHL assists on Nov. 16 at Laval, as well as recording his 100th career AHL point on Feb. 1 at San Diego.


The Detroit, Michigan native joined the organization when he signed a one-year, two-way NHL contract with Vancouver on July 14 as an unrestricted free agent. His performance in Abbotsford, along with his 16 games played for Vancouver this season helped earn him a two-year, two-way extension which he signed on March 23.
Wolanin was returned on loan to Abbotsford from Vancouver on April 15 and is now eligible to compete in the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs.

Abbotsford is set to host the entirety of the First Round against the Bakersfield Condors, starting with Game 1 on Wednesday night at Abbotsford Centre (7 p.m. puck drop).

WOLANIN WINS EDDIE SHORE AWARD AS 2022-23 AHL OUTSTANDING DEFENCEMAN

For the 72nd and final time this regular season, the Abbotsford Canucks took to the ice on Saturday night to do battle with the Calgary Wranglers, concluding a 12 game season series.

Linus Karlsson became the second player in team history to play in every game in the regular season, joining John Stevens from 2021/22. Justin Dowling and Andy Carroll returned to the lineup, while Arturs Silovs returned to the Canucks’ crease. Dustin Wolf once again took to the Wranglers net on Saturday night.

In similar fashion to Friday’s game, the first period was feisty and closely matched, with neither goaltender budging in the opening 20 minutes. A scrap between Tristen Nielsen and Kevin Rooney highlighted the frame, with Abbotsford outshooting the Wranglers 11-6, with no one finding the back of the net.

That wouldn’t be the same for the second period, as just minutes after Calgary had a goal overturned due to the net coming off behind Silovs, Abbotsford broke the other way with Aatu Räty. Räty squared the puck to Klimovich on the fast break, who was able to beat Dustin Wolf’s glove and put the Canucks on the board first with six minutes gone in the second.

Calgary would answer eight minutes later, as Nick DeSimone took a shot from the right faceoff circle. Through traffic in front, the puck squeezed past Silovs for the Wranglers first full-strength goal of the series. DeSimone’s eighth of the season would be enough to send the teams to the locker room tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes. The Canucks lead the shot count 25-18 through two periods.

Abbotsford made sure to grab the lead back when Zach Giuttari let the puck fly from the point with traffic in front. Part of that traffic was Max Sasson, who got a stick on the shot and deflected the puck past Wolf. The tally would be Sasson’s first career AHL goal, and gave the Canucks a 2-1 lead.

The Wranglers rallied back with a powerplay goal from Dryden Hunt, before Adam Klapka gave Calgary their first lead of the night with 12 minutes remaining in the contest.

Despite a late surge on the man advantage from Abbotsford, the Wranglers held on to that 3-2 lead, taking the full two points and were crowned the AHL regular season champions with the win. 

Danila Klimovich made it goals in four consecutive games with his first period tally, while Nils Höglander made it a three game point streak (0G, 3A) with his secondary helper on the Sasson goal. Wolf stopped 28 of the 30 Canucks efforts he faced, while Silovs turned aside 28 of the 31 Calgary shots against him.

Following the results in both Abbotsford as well as the Colorado Eagles game, Abbotsford have secured fourth place in the Pacific Division. They will face the fifth-place Bakersfield Condors in the first round of the 2022/23 Calder Cup Playoffs, with games taking place at the Abbotsford Centre on April 19th, 21st and 23rd. The series is a best of three and is a rematch of last season’s playoff matchup which saw the Condors take the series in straight games down in Bakersfield.
