The Abbotsford Canucks returned to home ice for Game 3 of the Pacific Division Semifinals against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, with the series tied 1-1. With a pivotal win on the line, the Canucks looked to take control of the best-of-five showdown.

Artūrs Šilovs got the nod in net for the sixth straight game, once again facing off against Coachella’s Nikke Kokko.

Abbotsford faced pressure early, including having to kill off the game’s first penalty. The Firebirds kept Šilovs busy, piling on shots, but the Canucks netminder stood tall to keep the game scoreless. That changed roughly 15 minutes in, when Nate Smith notched Abbotsford’s first shot on goal—capitalizing on his own rebound to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. With momentum building, the Canucks struck again in the final seconds of the period. Kirill Kudryavtsev ripped a point shot through traffic and past Kokko, sending Abbotsford into the intermission up 2-0, despite having only a couple shots on net.

The second period turned into a defensive battle. Both teams exchanged power plays, but neither side could convert. Strong goaltending and structured defense preserved the 2-0 scoreline heading into the third.

Early in the final frame, the Firebirds pushed back. Just over three minutes in, Ryan Winterton snapped a shot from the left circle to make it 2-1, giving Coachella Valley some hope. The tight, back-and-forth play continued, but the Canucks gained a power play opportunity with under five minutes to go. Although they couldn’t capitalize, Abbotsford sealed the win when Phil Di Giuseppe launched a long-range empty-netter as Kokko headed to the bench. The 3-1 final gave the Canucks a 2-1 series lead.

The teams will face off again Friday night in Abbotsford, where the Canucks will have a chance to clinch a spot in the Pacific Division Final against the Colorado Eagles.

The Abbotsford Canucks suited up for the second game in Round 2 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the Palm Desert.

Artūrs Šilovs was given the starting nod with Nikke Kokko in net for Coachella.

For the second straight game, the Firebirds were the first on the scoresheet as Gustav Olofsson scored with a hard shot from the point off the face-off. Four minutes later, the Firebirds doubled their lead, as rookie defenceman Ty Nelson scored his first goal of the playoffs.

The Canucks went on a power play with 7:31 to go in the period after a high-stick on Chase Wouters. In the dying seconds of the man-advantage, Wouters took a shot off the cross bar that looked as though it may have gone in the net. After the whistle, the shot was reviewed and it was called a no-goal. 

As the period came to a close, Max Lajoie took a shot from the face-off dot that had the puck trickling past Šilovs to give the home team a 3-0 lead to close out the first.

Looking to get back in the game, Nikita Tolopilo replaced Šilovs to start the second period. Only a few minuets into the frame, the Canucks started making moves, courtesy of Phil Di Giuseppe and Nate Smith scoring two goals 1:22 apart.

After Di Giuseppe picked up a bouncing puck in the slot, he skated over to the face-off dot and while spinning around, took a shot that made its way to the net and past Kokko. Akito Hirose and Aatu Räty were credited with the assists.

Moments later, as Jujhar Khaira was being pinned to the boards behind the net, he slid the puck over to Nate Smith, who’s wrap-around attempt was successful and earned him his first career playoff goal. 

Abbotsford continued its quest to equalize the game in the third period. About six minutes in, Sammy Blais made a cross-ice pass to Smith, who found Khaira in the slot. Khaira took a shot on a wide-open net that hit the back bar and came flying out. While all the Canucks on the ice celebrated, the referees were unsure if the puck had hit the cross bar or had gone in. The review confirmed that the puck did go in the net and Khaira officially tied the game at three a piece.  

With less than seven minutes remaining in the third, the Canucks broke the tie thanks to the trio of Blais, Smith, and Khaira. Down on the ice, Blais passed the puck to Smith behind the net, who found Khaira on the doorstep to score his second of the night. However, the Firebirds got the equalizer with 4:02 remaining in the period after a scramble in front of Tolopilo, sending the game to overtime.

The extra frame started with a blaze, as both teams had chances in the first minute. Five minutes in, as Tolopilo looked to play the puck, it was taken away by the Firebirds’ Melanson, who scored the winning goal to tie the series.

Abbotsford Canucks come back from a three-goal deficit, but fall to the Firebirds 5-4 in Overtime

The Abbotsford Canucks began Round 2 of the Calder Cup Playoffs in the Palm Desert for Game 1 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds. The series is a best-of-five, with the first team to three wins moving on to the next round.  

Artūrs Šilovs took the starting netminder role with Nikke Kokko in between the pipes on the other end of the ice. 

The intensity was high from the moment the puck dropped, but it was the Firebirds that took the first goal of the series, with Ryan Winterton getting on the board just 1:36 in.

With 10 minutes remaining in the frame, the Abbotsford Canucks struck back. Linus Karlsson had possession of the puck behind the net before passing it up to Jett Woo in front. With a slick forehand-backhand move, Woo put it past Kokko to make it a 1-1 game.

Only 1:05 later, the Canucks capitalized after the Firebirds’ goalie gave the puck away to Ty Mueller. The centreman took the puck in the corner and found Danila Klimovich in the slot, who made no mistake getting it into the back of the net.

Each team upped the pressure, looking to get on the scoresheet and adding to their shot-on-goal totals. However, it was the Canucks who converted a third time. With three minutes to go in the first, Abbotsford went on an odd-man-rush down the ice. Phil Di Giuseppe strode in on the wing, flipping the puck to Guillaume Brisebois, who tapped it past the goaltender to go up 3-1 and earn his first goal of the postseason. 

The second period was marked by an increase in defensive play and physicality. Eight minutes into the frame, Firebirds’ Jacob Melanson went crashing into Šilovs in the net, getting called for goaltender interference. The Abbotsford goalie remained in net and made several saves to keep his team in the lead. The physicality continued throughout the period, but neither team found the back of the net.

The strong play from Šilovs and the Abbotsford defence stretched into the third period, looking to shutdown the home team’s chances. With less than 14 minutes in the game on a Firebirds’ man-advantage, Coachella Valley’s Ben Meyers tried to jam the puck into the net. While it looked as though it may have gone in, Šilovs managed to keep it out at the last moment by sweeping the puck away with his glove. After a review to confirm, the no-goal call on the ice stood, keeping the two-goal lead for the Canucks. 

With under four minutes remaining in the game, Coachella Valley pulled Kokko, aiming to even the score. As the clock wound down, the Canucks held off their opponents, winning the game 3-1 with Šilovs making 29 saves.

Abbotsford Canucks win 3-1 in the first game of Round 2 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds

The Abbotsford Canucks opened the Pacific Division Finals on home ice against the Colorado Eagles, aiming to set the tone early in the series. Artūrs Šilovs got the nod in net once again for Abbotsford, facing off against Colorado’s Trent Miner.

The opening period was a tight, physical battle as both teams spent the first 20 minutes feeling each other out. Shots were limited on both ends, and while each side took a penalty, neither power play could convert. Goaltending was the story early, with both Šilovs and Miner standing tall to keep the game scoreless heading into the first intermission.

The second period saw Abbotsford begin to generate more momentum, especially after successfully killing off another penalty. The Canucks sustained offensive pressure, and their efforts finally paid off with just under five minutes to play in the frame. After Wyatt Aamodt was called for a penalty, Abbotsford went to work on the power play. Sammy Blais found Ty Mueller in the slot, and Mueller made no mistake, ripping a shot past Miner to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. The remainder of the period continued with back-and-forth action, but Abbotsford held their lead heading into the third.

With just a one-goal margin, the final frame was a defensive match. Both teams tightened up, with few clean chances allowed. As the clock ticked down, Abbotsford faced late pressure after Linus Karlsson took a penalty with just over three minutes to go. The Eagles pulled Miner for the extra attacker, creating a 6-on-4 advantage. But the Canucks stayed composed and held firm. With just five seconds left, Victor Mancini sealed the deal, chasing down the puck and scoring into the empty net to secure the 2-0 win.

Šilovs was perfect once again, earning his second consecutive shutout and sending Abbotsford to a crucial Game 1 victory.

The teams will face off again on Sunday in Abbotsford for Game 2—the final home game before the series shifts to Loveland, Colorado.

Abbotsford Canucks

The Abbotsford Canucks looked to clinch their spot in the Pacific Division Finals as they faced off against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in Game 4.

Artūrs Šilovs made his seventh consecutive postseason start, continuing his strong run between the pipes. At the other end, the Canucks were up against a familiar netminder in Nikke Kokko.

The game began at an even pace, with both teams playing strong 200-foot hockey. Coachella managed to get a few early shots on goal and blocked several Abbotsford attempts in their do-or-die matchup. Just under nine minutes into the first period, John Hayden was called for interference, putting the Firebirds down a man. Abbotsford capitalized on the power play about a minute in, when Max Sasson buried a rebound off a shot from Kirill Kudryavtsev, giving the Canucks a 1-0 lead midway through the period.

A few minutes later, Chase Wouters took a penalty, but Abbotsford’s penalty kill stayed sharp, keeping the Firebirds off the board. The Canucks carried their one-goal lead into the intermission, though a penalty at the buzzer meant they would begin the second period short-handed.

Abbotsford successfully killed off the early penalty and continued to frustrate Coachella’s attack. The Firebirds kept the pressure on, blocking shots and creating chances, but Šilovs stood tall. Despite a couple of 4-on-4 stretches, neither team could find the back of the net, and the score remained 1-0 heading into the third period.

With 20 minutes between them and the third round, the Canucks buckled down. The Firebirds, desperate to stay alive, battled hard and both teams earned a power play opportunity, but again, neither could convert. As the clock ticked down, Coachella pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. It backfired when Phil Di Giuseppe found Linus Karlsson wide open, and Karlsson fired the puck into the empty net, sealing a 2-0 lead with under two minutes remaining.

The Canucks held on to complete the shutout and eliminate the Firebirds — the Calder Cup finalists in back-to-back seasons — advancing to the Pacific Division Finals.

Abbotsford will now host the Colorado Eagles for Games 1 and 2 of Round 3 on May 16th and 18th.
