Abbotsford Canucks General Manager, Ryan Johnson, announced today that the club has signed forward Braden Birnie to a professional try-out agreement.

Birnie, 24, recently made his professional hockey debut with the ECHL’s Rapid City Rush on March 12 and has since recorded six points (two goals, four assists) in his first nine pro games played. Prior to joining Rapid City, the 6’2, 192-pound winger completed his fourth and final collegiate season in 2025-26 with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks (NCAA-Independent), recording career highs in goals (seven), points (18) and penalty minutes (22).

The Weyburn, Saskatchewan native totaled 47 points (16 goals, 31 assists) and 74 penalty minutes over 114 NCAA games played with Alaska-Fairbanks between 2022 to 2026.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS SIGN BIRNIE TO PTO

The Abbotsford Canucks had a quick turnaround following last night’s win as they faced the San Diego Gulls for the final time this season.

Jiří Patera got the nod for back-to-back starts, taking on Tomas Suchanek at the other end. Abbotsford rolled out an identical forward group, while Jimmy Schuldt swapped in for Guillaume Brisebois on the back end.

It was another action-packed first period, with Abbotsford putting on a show for the home crowd. Ben Berard opened the scoring just five and a half minutes in, slipping the puck through Suchanek’s legs to make it 1-0 early. The pressure continued, and Nils Åman doubled the lead midway through the frame after a cross-ice feed from Nick Poisson left him with a wide-open net.

Jiří Patera was stellar in the opening period, turning aside 13 shots, but with just 0.4 seconds remaining, Sasha Pastujov beat him on the right pad to make it 2-1 heading into the second.

The Canucks looked to respond after the late goal against, and despite being outshot, made their chances count. Less than two minutes into the second, Bennett Schimek found Arshdeep Bains in the slot, and Bains one-timed it home to restore the two-goal lead while recording his 50th career AHL goal.

The Gulls pushed back, and around the 14-minute mark, Cal Burke set up Drew Helleson, who stickhandled his way to the back of the net to bring it back within one heading into the third.

San Diego struck quickly in the final frame, as Pastujov scored his second of the game just 57 seconds in to tie it at three.

The Canucks responded in a big way. With a four-minute power play opportunity midway through the period, Danila Klimovich fired one home to regain the lead. Minutes later, Nils Åman and Bennett Schimek broke in together, with Schimek finding space upstairs to score his first career AHL goal and extend the lead to 5-3.

The Gulls pulled their goaltender late, but Abbotsford held strong to secure a 5-3 victory and complete the weekend sweep.

The Canucks defeat the Gulls 5-3 

The Abbotsford Canucks kicked off their final series against the San Diego Gulls, marking the beginning of their home stretch to close out the season. With just four home games remaining, the Canucks were eager to put on a show for their crowd.

Jiří Patera got the start in goal for Abbotsford, facing off against Calle Clang at the other end. The lineup saw a boost with Ben Berard returning from injury, slotting in alongside Ty Mueller and Chase Stillman. On the back end, Sawyer Mynio drew in for Jimmy Schuldt.

The Canucks wasted no time getting on the board. Just over two minutes into the game, Jack Thompson fired a shot from the blue line that was turned aside, but Guillaume Brisebois was quick to pounce on the rebound, burying it into an open net to make it 1-0.

Abbotsford kept the pressure on, and midway through the period, Chase Stillman found Ben Berard in the slot. Berard one-timed the puck home to double the lead. Despite some penalty trouble late in the frame, strong defensive play and steady goaltending from Patera preserved the 2-0 advantage heading into the second.

The Canucks carried that momentum into the middle frame, continuing to play a structured defensive game while generating chances offensively. With just over five minutes remaining in the period, Danila Klimovich was rewarded for his persistence, throwing a blind shot on goal that found its way past Clang to extend the lead to 3-0.

The final period exploded. Patera remained sharp between the pipes, but with time winding down, the Gulls pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker. Justin Bailey broke through to make it 3-1 with under four minutes to play. Shortly after, Judd Caulfield slipped another past Patera just 40 seconds later, cutting the lead to one.

Facing late pressure, the Canucks responded. Chase Wouters restored the two-goal cushion with a slick move, sliding the puck through Clang’s legs to make it 4-2. Moments later, Ty Mueller sealed the game with an empty-netter, securing a 5-2 victory for Abbotsford.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow night to wrap up their season series.

THE CANUCKS BEAT THE GULLS 5-2

The Abbotsford Canucks closed out their home schedule with a hard-fought battle against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

Ty Young got the nod between the pipes, squaring off against Victor Östman. The Canucks also shuffled their forward lines, while Nikolai Knyzhov slotted in on the blue line to round out the lineup changes.

The opening frame was relatively quiet, with both teams generating a handful of chances but nothing too dangerous. Abbotsford earned the lone power play of the period, but neither side was able to break through, sending the game into the second period scoreless.

Things picked up in the middle frame. Just over six minutes in, Eduard Salé fired a shot on net that nearly crossed the line. With Ty Young out of position, Carson Rehkopf was quick to pounce on the rebound and open the scoring for Coachella Valley.

The Canucks didn’t take long to respond. A few minutes later, Bennett Schimek found himself all alone and beat Östman blocker side to even things up at one. Shortly after, a shot from Nils Åman took an odd bounce and landed right on the stick of Ben Berard in the slot, who made no mistake to give Abbotsford a 2–1 lead heading into the third.

The Firebirds pushed back early in the final frame. J.R. Avon capitalized on a rebound opportunity, slipping the puck under Young’s right pad to tie the game at two. Both teams pressed for a go-ahead goal in regulation, but neither could find the breakthrough.

In overtime, a costly line change by Abbotsford opened the door for Coachella Valley. Tyson Jugnauth took advantage, finding the back of the net to seal the 4–3 overtime win for the Firebirds.

Abbotsford closes out its home slate and will now hit the road to wrap up the regular season.

The Abbotsford Canucks played host to the Coachella Valley Firebirds for the first of their final two home games of the season, kicking off Fan Appreciation Weekend.

Jiří Patera made his third consecutive start in net, coming off a weekend sweep over the San Diego Gulls. He faced Nikke Kokko at the other end. Christian Felton rejoined the forward group, while Braden Birnie made his AHL debut. Guillaume Brisebois also drew back into the lineup, with Nikolai Knyzhov coming out to round out the defensive core.

The opening period featured fast-paced, back-and-forth action, with both teams generating quality chances and capitalizing on man advantages. However, both goaltenders stood tall, and the game remained scoreless heading into the second.

The Canucks continued to generate strong offensive looks, but it was the Firebirds who struck first. On a shorthanded opportunity, John Hayden buried a rebound to give Coachella Valley a 1–0 lead early in the second. Despite continued pressure and chances, Abbotsford was unable to solve Kokko through the middle frame.

Looking to respond in the third, the Canucks kept pushing, but posts and unlucky bounces continued to get in the way. Coachella Valley extended their lead to 2–0 late in the period, courtesy of Cooper Marody. Abbotsford pulled the goaltender in search of an extra attacker, but time ran out before they could find the back of the net, ultimately falling 2–0 to the Firebirds.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow as the Canucks close out their 2025–26 home schedule before finishing the season on the road.
