The Abbotsford Canucks hosted the Henderson Silver Knights for the final series of their homestand.

Jiří Patera got the start between the pipes for Abbotsford, facing off against Carl Lindbom at the other end. The Canucks lineup featured a pair of new faces, as Bennett Schimek made his professional debut on the wing alongside Danila Klimovich and Ty Mueller, while Jayden Grubbe suited up for his first game as an Abbotsford Canuck next to Austin Brimmer.

The opening period featured back-and-forth action, though neither side generated many dangerous chances. Abbotsford had the lone power play of the frame, but both goaltenders were sharp, keeping the game scoreless heading into the second.

Henderson struck first early in the middle period, as Joe Fleming capitalized on a rebound in front with Patera out of position. The intensity ramped up midway through the period when Jimmy Schuldt and Kai Uchacz dropped the gloves, igniting the crowd. Abbotsford answered late in the frame, with Arshdeep Bains finishing a behind-the-net feed from Nils Åman to even the score at 1–1.

The Silver Knights regained the lead early in the third when Trevor Connelly redirected a pass from Dylan Coghlan in front. Henderson extended the advantage midway through the period on a power-play marker from Raphael Lavoie. With time winding down, Abbotsford pulled their netminder for the extra attacker, but Tanner Laczynski sealed the 4–1 victory with an empty-net goal.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow evening at 4 PM.

The Canucks fall 4-1 to the Henderson Silver Knights 

The Abbotsford Canucks bounced back with a big win over the Manitoba Moose on Autism Acceptance Night.

Ty Young got the start between the pipes tonight, taking on Thomas Milic, who was making his second straight start. Austin Brimmers drew into the lineup for his AHL debut alongside Nick Poisson, while the defensive group remained unchanged.

The Canucks had a much stronger first period than the night before. After generating several Grade-A chances, Nils Åman finally broke through, sending a rebound to the back of the net with the Moose netminder down and out of position to make it 1–0, 14 minutes into the opening frame. Just a minute and a half later, Danila Klimovich capitalized on the power play, ripping a laser from the right circle past Milic to extend the lead to 2–0 for the home side. Ty Young was stellar in net, stopping all 11 shots he faced to send his team into the second period with the two-goal advantage.

The game began to heat up in the middle frame, with penalties quickly piling up. The Moose managed to chip away at the deficit with just eight seconds remaining on their power play, finally beating Young to pull within one, eight minutes into the period. Shortly after, Joe Arntsen dropped the gloves with Tyson Empey, before Chase Wouters squared off with Ashton Sautner, sending all four players to the box for fighting. Both goaltenders remained sharp for the rest of the period, and the Canucks carried their one-goal lead into the third.

Looking to extend their lead and secure the two points, the Canucks pushed early in the final frame. Midway through the period, Danila Klimovich buried a feed from Cole Clayton while parked in front of the net, restoring the two-goal cushion. With time winding down, the Moose applied late pressure, but Ty Young stood tall. Manitoba pulled their goaltender with just over two minutes remaining, but Jimmy Schuldt sealed the victory with an empty-net goal from down the ice to secure a 4–1 win over the Manitoba Moose.

The team will take a day off before preparing to take on the Henderson Silver Knights this weekend.

The Abbotsford Canucks celebrated their fifth annual Women in Sports Night this past Saturday, highlighting the women who power the organization, while inspiring the next generation to pursue careers in the sports industry. 

The evening included high school girls from across the Lower Mainland, who were invited to Rogers Forum to take part in a unique job-shadowing experience that gave them an inside look at the many roles that exist behind the scenes of a professional sports team. 

For Cambree Lovesy, Program Manager for the Canucks For Kids Fun (CFKF) and Community Engagement, the idea came from a desire to show young women that there’s a pathway for them to get into sports. 

“There's so many people that work to put this together,” Lovesy said. "I really wanted to find a way to connect with students and give girls a tangible way to get their foot in the door in sports industry.”  

Growing up in Abbotsford, Lovesy mentioned she fell into the sports industry and before she did, she never imagined the array of opportunities that existed within the sports world.  

Her idea turned into a pilot program for this year’s Women in Sports Night. They opened applications to students through the Abbotsford Canucks social channels and received an overwhelming response. 

“We wanted to see if there was an interest there this year, and obviously there was. We got a lot of people from universities applying too, so that’s an indication that there's a strong interest there, and I want to set up something more permanent after this,” Lovesy said. 

They sent invitations to the girls with the top applications and paired the participants with Abbotsford Canucks staff members based on the department they were interested in. Each student connected with their assigned member ahead of game day, giving them an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the role before arriving at the rink. 

On the night of the game, the students arrived at five o'clock and were given an inside look at how the organization operates. They were set up with an Abby Canucks swag bag, information on future opportunities and the top prospects program before shadowing staff in game presentation, food and beverage, building operations, box office, and finance to name a few. Abbotsford Canucks COO and Alternate Governor Jim Kozak welcomed two students to shadow him for the evening.

Lovesy said the response from the students and staff members after the event cemented her feeling that this could be a program to run a few times a season to be able to reach more students. 

She says the culture in Abbotsford is second-to-none and working with a group that cares about lifting the next generation of female leaders is empowering. 

“It is so rewarding. Every boss that I've had in sports has been a woman, and it's been women that have championed me, and helped me to the next level of my career and now like to have the opportunity to be able to do that for other girls is the best part of my job,” Lovesy said.  

“There are women in so many different departments here that keep this organization running and I lean on those ladies a lot – they inspire me. To watch them pass on that knowledge to other girls is so inspiring, and my heart is so full after Saturday.”

In addition to job shadowing experience, Women in Sports Night also highlighted several community partners and organizations that support women and girls throughout the Fraser Valley. 

Care for Women served as the community corner partner for the evening, which is an organization that supports women in the first stage of motherhood in the Fraser Valley.  

Abby Female Hockey Association had young players taking part in benchwarmers, high-five tunnel, mini minor during intermissions.  

Ticket donations were distributed to different women’s support groups around the Fraser Valley, ensuring more members of the community could take part in the celebration. 

There were a couple of panels during intermissions that included Vancouver Goldeneyes forward Jenn Gardiner, defender Madison Samoskevich, Goldeneyes’ Director of Business Operations, Tania Richards, Goldeneyes’ social media manager Rachel Halliwell, and Lovesy on a business panel. 

The event celebrated the accomplishments of women in sports today, and Lovesy says it’s another step in working towards equity in sport. 

“Hopefully we are working towards a world where we don't have to have these nights and these kinds of opportunities are as available to women and girls as they are to boys. It's really special to be a part of that movement.” 

Abbotsford Canucks Inspire Future Leaders on Women in Sports Night 

The Abbotsford Canucks looked to bounce back and get back in the win column as they took on the San Jose Barracuda in the first game of their back-to-back series.

This marked the first time Jack Thompson faced his former team, while the Canucks also matched up against Jett Woo for the first time. Jiří Patera got the start and had sole possession of the crease, taking on familiar Barracuda netminder Gabriel Carriere. Dino Kambeitz returned to the lineup after missing the previous game, while Joe Arntsen drew in as the seventh defenceman as the Canucks went with an 11-and-7 formation.

The Canucks came out with a strong start, generating plenty of good looks at the Barracuda end. Patera was also sharp early, making a number of key saves to keep the game level. Abbotsford was tested with the game’s first penalty kill and built even more momentum after creating a few shorthanded chances. Around the midway mark of the opening frame, Carriere went behind the net to play the puck, but on his way back tipped the net forward. The puck landed on Chase Stillman’s stick, and his shot from the slot found the back of the net to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead heading into the second period.

The momentum swung heavily in the middle frame. Just over two minutes in, Brendan Hoffman capitalized on a turnover and found himself on a breakaway, where he buried the equalizer for San Jose. Two minutes later, Kasper Halttunen added another, one-timing the puck home off a feed from Oliver Wahlstrom to give the Barracuda the lead. The Canucks then earned their first power play of the game, but Anthony Vincent struck shorthanded to turn the game on its head and make it 3-1 for the home side.

Looking to push back in the third, the Canucks struggled as they continued to be heavily outshot. Their climb got even steeper in the second half of the frame when a penalty to Chase Wouters led to Jimmy Huntington cashing in on the power play to make it 4-1. With tensions rising late, a big scrum broke out in the final three-and-a-half minutes, sending multiple players to the room but leaving the Canucks on the man advantage. It was too little, too late for Abbotsford, as they fell 4-1 to the Barracuda. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM.

The Abbotsford Canucks headed south to Ontario, California, to take on the Ontario Reign, looking to bounce back after dropping their weekend series to Henderson.

Jiří Patera got the start in goal for Abbotsford, facing off against Phoenix Copley for the home side. The Canucks were short on forwards once again and opted for an 11-forward, 7-defenceman setup, with Christian Felton skating up front. Guillaume Brisebois also returned to the lineup for the first time since the Calder Cup Championship game in Charlotte, slotting in as the seventh defenceman among newly adjusted pairings.

The Canucks aimed for a strong start in the opening period, but it was Ontario that struck first. Just four minutes in, Kenney Connors opened the scoring with an unfortunate bounce, spinning and firing a shot from his knees that found its way into the back of the net after he had lost a skate blade blocking a shot moments earlier. Despite generating several quality chances, Abbotsford was unable to find the equalizer and trailed 1–0 heading into the second period.

The middle frame brought a more physical edge, highlighted by several big hits and a fight midway through the period. Chase Wouters dropped the gloves with Francesco Pinelli in an effort to spark momentum for the Canucks. Both goaltenders stood tall, turning aside quality opportunities, but Abbotsford remained unable to solve Copley and entered the third period still down by one.

Ontario extended its lead early in the final frame. Just over four minutes in, Koehn Ziemmer capitalized on a rebound and, in a similar spinning motion to the opening goal, buried it to make it 2–0.

Abbotsford continued to push and was rewarded late in the game. With just over three minutes remaining, the Canucks earned a power play and pulled Patera to create a 6-on-4 advantage. It didn’t take long to convert, as a crisp tic-tac-toe passing play between Jack Thompson, Danila Klimovich, and Ty Mueller resulted in a goal, cutting the deficit to one.

The Canucks kept the pressure on with the extra attacker, but Ontario regained possession in the final seconds. Kenney Connors sealed the game with an empty-net goal, securing a 3–1 victory for the Reign.

The Abbotsford Canucks returned home to close out their St. Patrick’s Day weekend with an afternoon matchup against the Henderson Silver Knights.

Ty Young got the start between the pipes, facing Cameron Whitehead at the other end. Nick Poisson was the lone addition to the lineup, giving Abbotsford a full 12-forward, 6-defenceman formation once again.

The first period was action-packed, with the Canucks striking early. Jayden Grubbe made his presence known, burying a rebound in front of Henderson’s net to record his first goal as an Abbotsford Canuck and give the home side an early lead. Just minutes later, Sawyer Mynio connected with Nick Poisson on a cross-ice feed, and Poisson finished the play to make it 2-0 less than six minutes in.

The Silver Knights responded quickly. Viliam Kmec wired a shot from the right circle to pull his team within one, and five minutes later Ben Hemmerling capitalized on a feed from Matyas Sapovaliv at the top of the crease to tie the game at two. Tensions escalated soon after, as Austin Brimmer dropped the gloves with Brandon Hickey to spark some energy for Abbotsford. Henderson carried that momentum, however, as Hemmerling struck again from the crease to give the visitors a 3-2 lead heading into the second period.

The pace slowed in the middle frame, but Henderson extended their advantage. Hemmerling completed the hat trick less than nine minutes in, pushing the Silver Knights ahead 4-2. Physicality remained high with heavy hits and fights, but Henderson was the only team to find the back of the net in the period.

The Canucks pushed back early in the third. Just over a minute in, Ty Mueller snapped a shot from the slot past Whitehead to bring Abbotsford within one. Shortly after, Chase Stillman finished a one-timer from Danila Klimovich on the power play to even the score at 4-4.

Henderson refused to back down. Dylan Coghlan restored the lead by jamming home a loose puck at the net front, and midway through the frame Kai Uchacz added another to make it 6-4. Abbotsford earned a late power play, and moments after it expired, Klimovich found space and hammered home a shot to cut the deficit to one.

With time winding down, the Canucks pulled their goaltender in search of the equalizer, but the Silver Knights sealed the game with an empty-net goal, securing a 7-5 victory.
