Game 5 of the Calder Cup Finals was a back-and-forth affair between the Abbotsford Canucks and Charlotte Checkers. A tight third period with neither team edging out the other; the game went into overtime. 

In the first period, Abby had a few grade A chances before the Checkers opened the scoring at 12:55 by forward Ben Steeves. Jack Devine and Oliver Okuliar were credited with the assists. 

Abbotsford drew a penalty putting them on the power play and Linus Karlsson capitalized 22 seconds into the man-advantage, with assists from Arshdeep Bains and Christain Wolanin. 

The score was 1-1 going into the first intermission and the Checkers held the advantage in shots on net 12-11. 

In the second period, Checkers forward Brett Chorske scored at 3:12, Jesse Puljujärvi getting the helper on the play. 

The Canucks answered less than a minute later. Arshdeep Bains scored a breakaway goal as he made a move to the forehand and roofed it. Max Sasson and Kirill Kudryavtsev scored the assists on the goal with Sasson making the pass that led to the Bains’ breakaway. 

Karlsson scored his second of the night off the rush, coming down the left side of the ice and cradling the puck to the center for a wrist shot flying past Kaapo Kahkonen, sending Abbotsford Centre into a frenzy. Mueller and Jett Woo assisted on the play. 

Charlotte’s Rasmus Asplund scored at 12:12, assisted by Eamon Powell and John Leonard, to tie the game 3-3 going into the second intermission. Through the second, Charlotte outshot Abbotsford 14-7. 

The third was scoreless, but the Checkers had nine shots to Abbotsford’s six. In the extra frame, the Canucks outshot Charlotte 8-5. Puljujärvi scored the Checkers’ winning goal that deflected off Guillame Brisebois’ skate and into the net. 

Artūrs Šilovs stopped 36 of 40 shots he faced on the night. 

The last two games of the series are in Charlotte at Bojangles Coliseum, with Game 6 on Monday, June 23rd at 4:00 p.m. PT and if necessary, Game 7 Wednesday, June 25th at 4:00 p.m. PT.

The Abbotsford Canucks made the most of their home-ice advantage and the energy from the crowd, to beat the Charlotte Checkers 3-2 at Abbotsford Centre. 

Jonathan Lekkerimäki found his scoring touch, setting the tone early, and Artūrs Šilovs had another impressive performance, turning aside 30 of 32 shots he faced, improving his 2025 playoff record to 15-6. 

Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra was impressed with Lekkerimäki’s poise and the way he played in a big-game environment. 

“The kid has ice in his veins. He doesn't shy away from these big moments. You can see tonight, he had two quality looks, and he made them count. So, that sums up the type of player that he is when given the opportunity and put in the right spot – he'll make good,” Malhotra said. 

In the first period, Lekkerimäki opened the scoring just 75 seconds into the game, finishing a two-on-one off a pass from Ty Mueller. Christian Wolanin got the secondary assist on the play with a strong breakout to spring Mueller and Lekkerimäki. 

Abby had two power play opportunities in the first, but the Checkers’ penalty kill showed why they had the best PK rate during the regular season. The Canucks’ PK was a perfect 3 for 3 in the opening frame and Šilovs was sharp from puck drop, the Checkers holding a 10-6 advantage of shots on net in the first. 

The Canucks took a 1-0 lead into the first break. 

In the second, Phil Di Giuseppe danced through the defence, with a chance on net, but Kaapo Kähkönen was steadfast, keeping it to a one-goal game. 

Coming off a four-point performance in Game 3, Arshdeep Bains went one-on-one against Charlotte defenceman Matt Kiersted, scoring at 11:30 off a wrist shot from the left circle. It was Bains’ sixth goal of the postseason, and Max Sasson and Linus Karlsson assisted on the play, for their eighth and 12th assists in the playoffs respectively. 

Abbotsford and Charlotte were an even 8-8 shots on net in the middle frame, the Canucks taking a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission. 

The Canucks came out strong to start the third period, Lekkerimäki scoring at 3:47 off the rush and deking Kähkönen for his second of the game and third of the postseason. Sammy Blais and Mueller assisted in the play. 

Charlotte answered late in the third period; Checkers forward Kyle Criscuolo scored the team’s first goal of the night on the power play at 8:34. With six skaters on the ice, Checkers forward Jack Devine scored his first goal of the playoffs to bring Charlotte within one with 25.4 seconds left, but the Canucks closed out the game 3-2. 

The Canucks hold a 3-1 series lead. Game 5 will be back at the Abbotsford Centre on Saturday, June 21st with an earlier 6:00 p.m. start time.

In a tightly contested Calder Cup Finals series that’s seen overtime in both games, the Abbotsford Canucks scored five goals in the third period to beat the Charlotte Checkers 6-1 in regulation.  

Arshdeep Bains led the way with two goals and two assists, Linus Karlsson had one goal and three assists, and Artūrs Šilovs stopped 28 of 29 shots he faced while adding a primary assist in the third period. Special teams was a perfect five-for-five on the evening – the power play was two for two and the penalty kill was three for three. 

Abby had chances early, but Checkers’ forward Oliver Okuliar opened the scoring at 8:22, tallying his fourth goal of the playoffs. 

Abby took a penalty near the end of the first period, but the Canucks’ penalty kill and Artūrs Šilovs were steadfast to close out the first. Shots favoured Charlotte 9-8 at the end of the first, with the Checkers holding a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. 

In the second, Abbotsford’s Sammy Blais capitalized on the power play at 6:43, assisted by Linus Karlsson and Arshdeep Bains, Blais collecting his fifth goal of the playoffs. Abbotsford was three-for-ten on the man-advantage in the series against the Checkers coming into Game 3 and continued to be dynamic on the power play.  

Blais’ goal ignited the crowd, the Canucks using the momentum and finishing the middle frame tied 1-1. The Checkers held a 9-7 shot advantage in the second, and Šilovs made multiple saves in the last two minutes of the stanza to keep the game tied.  

In the third period, Bains was in a seated position on the ice but stayed focused and shoveled the puck to Max Sasson, who made a cross-crease pass to Linus Karlsson for the go-ahead goal. Karlsson scored net front at 3:58 for his 11th goal of the playoffs and with the goal, Karlsson now holds the record for most goals in a single AHL playoff run by a Swedish player. 

On their second power play of the night, Bains scored one by ripping the puck into the crease. It was assisted by Christian Wolanin and Karlsson. The Canucks kept rolling from there; Phil Di Giuseppe scored off the rush for his sixth goal of the postseason, extending Abbotsford’s lead 4-1. Di Giuseppe’s goal was assisted by Šilovs and when Al Murdoch announced the assist, “Arty” chants rang through the arena. 

The Checkers pulled the goalie with just less than four minutes remaining on the clock, just enough time for Bains to score an empty netter from just inside the blue line extended for his second of the evening. Tristen Nielsen scored on a breakaway at 17:34, deking Kaapo Kähkönen and going five-hole, the Canucks earning a 6-1 win. 

The crowd kept the energy up all night and Abbotsford Head Coach Manny Malhotra said there’s nothing like playing in front of Abby fans. 

“I can't say enough about our crowd. They continue to amaze us. Can't talk enough about how much energy the guys feed off of from this building. It's electrifying, it's a great atmosphere for hockey, and we're privileged to play in front of fans like this,” Malhotra said. 

The Canucks hold a 2-1 series lead, with Game 4 and 5 back at the Abbotsford Centre on Thursday, June 19th at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 21st at 6:00 p.m.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS TO HOST CALDER CUP CHAMPIONSHIP CELEBRATION THIS THURSDAY, JUNE 26

Abbotsford, BC – Abbotsford, this one’s for you! For the first time in franchise history, the Abbotsford Canucks have won the Calder Cup! With a 3-2 victory in Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals, Abbotsford becomes the first Vancouver Canucks affiliate to capture the AHL championship.   

“On behalf of the Aquilini family, I’d like to congratulate the Abbotsford Canucks, Jim Rutherford, Patrik Allvin, General Manager Ryan Johnson, Head Coach Manny Malhotra, the staff, and the players, on their Calder Cup Championship,” said Francesco Aquilini, Chairman & Governor, NHL. “The team has put in tireless work throughout the regular season and playoffs, both on and off the ice, and remained committed to themselves and their teammates. This is the culmination of an incredible two months of Calder Cup playoff hockey. Abbotsford was led offensively by Linus Karlsson (14-12-26) and Arshdeep Bains (7-17-24), while rookie Kirill Kudryavtsev had 10 points (1-9-10) on the back end with a league-leading +18 rating, and Artūrs Šilovs in net, who had a 16-7 record with a 2.01 goals-against average, a .931 save percentage, and five shutouts.  

Other key highlights include the team’s record at home, as they went 10-3 at the Abbotsford Centre, the best home playoff record in the league, Danila Klimovich led the league with two overtime winners, while Karlsson’s 14 goals set the record for most goals in a Calder Cup playoff run by a Swedish player.  

The opening round of the playoffs saw the team face-off against the Tucson Roadrunners in the best-of-three Pacific Division First Round series. Abbotsford defeated the Roadrunners two games to one, highlighted by Šilovs first shutout of the playoffs, a 5-0 win in Game 3.  

Round Two positioned Abbotsford against the Coachella Valley Firebirds. After splitting the first two games of the series in Palm Desert, the team returned home to the Abbotsford Centre, where they took Game 3 by a score of 3-1, and Game 4, which saw Šilovs record his second-consecutive series-clinching shutout, 2-0.  

The Pacific Division Finals had Abbotsford take on the Colorado Eagles, a rematch of the 2024 Pacific Division First Round. Šilovs picked up shutouts in Game 1 (2-0) and the series-clinching Game 5 (5-0), as the team advanced to the Western Conference Finals for the first time in team history.  

Abbotsford held home-ice advantage in the best-of-seven Western Conference Finals against the Texas Stars, winning Games 1 and 2 at home, before taking one of three games in Cedar Park, before returning home and capturing Robert W. Clarke trophy as Western Conference Finals champions in Game 6 with a 4-2 victory.  

The Calder Cup Finals saw Abbotsford take on the Charlotte Checkers for the first time in franchise history. After taking Game 1 in double overtime, courtesy of a goal by Klimovich, the Checkers took Game 2, and the team returned home with the series tied 1-1. Abbotsford exploded for six goals in a 6-1 victory in Game 3, before taking a close Game 4 by a score of 3-2. Charlotte escaped Game 5 with a 4-3 victory in overtime, with the overtime winner coming from Jesse Puljujarvi. Game 6 saw the teams travel back to Charlotte, where on the back of goals by Sammy Blais, Klimovich, and Karlsson, as well as 28 saves by Artūrs Šilovs, the Abbotsford Canucks captured their first-ever Calder Cup Championship.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS CLAIM FIRST-EVER CALDER CUP CHAMPIONSHIP 

The Abbotsford Canucks hit the ice Monday morning for skate in preparation for Game 6 of the Calder Cup Finals against the Charlotte Checkers. 

It was like most morning skates, but sitting in the bowl you could hear the pre-skate cheers from the team before they took the ice. Abby is working hard, and the vibes are high – just like the excessive heat, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 36 degrees in Charlotte. 

Artūrs Šilovs and Nikita Tolopilo got first tracks on the fresh sheet, and Danila Klimovich and Jonathan Lekkerimäki were the first of the skaters. The group skated laps, got shots on net, and did work from the circle. 

The Canucks have a 3-2 lead in the series and will be looking to close out tonight, with puck drop at 4:00 p.m. PT.
