The Abbotsford Canucks hosted a do-or-die Game 3 against the Tucson Roadrunners, looking to secure a win and advance to the Pacific Division Semifinals.

There were no changes in goal, as Artūrs Šilovs once again got the start for Abbotsford, facing off against Jaxson Stauber for Tucson.

The game promised to be a battle, and Abbotsford came out flying — throwing the body early and getting pucks on net. Despite the early pressure, Stauber stood tall for the Roadrunners, making several clutch saves. The game remained scoreless for the first 15 minutes, but Tristen Nielsen finally broke through, bringing the crowd to its feet.

Max Sasson broke into the zone alone, and after a series of passes, Nielsen fired a shot from the right circle to give Abbotsford a 1-0 lead.

The Canucks dominated the first period, posting 20 shots to Tucson’s 5, but only Nielsen’s goal found the back of the net.

The second period started with a bang. After some 4-on-4 action, Abbotsford quickly found themselves killing a penalty. Ty Mueller hustled into the offensive zone, battled behind the net, and fed Chase Wouters coming down the slot. Wouters buried the puck into a wide-open net, extending Abbotsford’s lead to 2-0 just 46 seconds into the period.

Shortly after, Tucson’s Andrew Agozzino was handed a five-minute major for interference on Mueller. Abbotsford wasted no time capitalizing: Chase Wouters found Max Sasson in front of the net, and Sasson made it 3-0 less than seven minutes into the frame.

Despite facing three more penalties in the period, Abbotsford’s penalty kill held firm. Šilovs continued to be rock-solid between the pipes as the Canucks outshot Tucson 33-14 through two periods.

With 20 minutes standing between them and the next round, Abbotsford kept battling, although their shot count slowed as Tucson pressed harder. Šilovs and the Canucks' defense remained impenetrable, shutting down every Roadrunner chance.

Midway through the third, Abbotsford earned a power play, and Sammy Blais made it count — burying a shot from the slot to extend the lead to 4-0.

Tucson pulled Stauber for an extra attacker during a late power play, but Abbotsford successfully killed it off. Then, with under two minutes left, Phil Di Giuseppe sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.

The Abbotsford Canucks shut out the Tucson Roadrunners with a dominant 5-0 win, punching their ticket to the Pacific Division Semifinals.

Next up: the Canucks will travel to Coachella Valley to face the Firebirds for the first two games of the series before returning home for Games 3, 4, and 5 on May 7, 9, and 11.

ABBOTSFORD CANUCKS ADVANCE TO SECOND ROUND! SEMIFINAL TICKETS ON SALE NOW!

The Abbotsford Canucks were hoping to secure a spot in Round 2 of the Calder Cup Playoffs as they faced off against the Tucson Roadrunners in Game 2 of the series.

Following a win the previous night, Artūrs Šilovs got the nod for back-to-back starts, this time facing a new opponent in net—Jaxson Stauber for the Roadrunners.

Abbotsford came out strong, winning the opening faceoff and quickly driving the puck toward the offensive zone. They earned an early power play and generated several chances, but Stauber stood tall and kept the game scoreless through the first half. Just past the 12-minute mark, Tucson flipped the momentum when Ben McCartney tipped in a Kevin Connauton shot from the blue line, giving the Roadrunners their first lead of the series. The Canucks pressed hard with dangerous opportunities, but between goalposts, blocked shots, and Stauber’s glove, they couldn’t find the back of the net. Tucson held a 1-0 lead going into the second period.

After some rough play late in the first, Abbotsford started the second on the power play but couldn’t convert. Just under four minutes in, Andrew Agozzino doubled Tucson’s lead with his first goal of the postseason, firing a shot from the circle that beat Šilovs. Now trailing 2-0, the Canucks intensified their attack, nearly doubling their shot count, but Stauber continued to shut the door. Then, with just two seconds left in the period, Kailer Yamamoto capitalized on a Canucks line change to break away and score Tucson’s third goal. The Roadrunners entered the final frame up 3-0.

Facing a steep hill, Abbotsford needed a quick spark in the third. They first had to kill off a penalty, which they did successfully. Less than three minutes in, Linus Karlsson gave the Canucks hope, jamming in a rebound to make it 3-1. Abbotsford looked to build on that momentum and got another power play opportunity, but came up empty. Tucson sealed the win with an empty-net goal, restoring their three-goal cushion.

The Abbotsford Canucks ultimately fell 4-1 in Game 2, forcing a decisive Game 3 on Sunday.

The Abbotsford Canucks returned to home ice for Game 3 of the Pacific Division Semifinals against the Coachella Valley Firebirds, with the series tied 1-1. With a pivotal win on the line, the Canucks looked to take control of the best-of-five showdown.

Artūrs Šilovs got the nod in net for the sixth straight game, once again facing off against Coachella’s Nikke Kokko.

Abbotsford faced pressure early, including having to kill off the game’s first penalty. The Firebirds kept Šilovs busy, piling on shots, but the Canucks netminder stood tall to keep the game scoreless. That changed roughly 15 minutes in, when Nate Smith notched Abbotsford’s first shot on goal—capitalizing on his own rebound to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. With momentum building, the Canucks struck again in the final seconds of the period. Kirill Kudryavtsev ripped a point shot through traffic and past Kokko, sending Abbotsford into the intermission up 2-0, despite having only a couple shots on net.

The second period turned into a defensive battle. Both teams exchanged power plays, but neither side could convert. Strong goaltending and structured defense preserved the 2-0 scoreline heading into the third.

Early in the final frame, the Firebirds pushed back. Just over three minutes in, Ryan Winterton snapped a shot from the left circle to make it 2-1, giving Coachella Valley some hope. The tight, back-and-forth play continued, but the Canucks gained a power play opportunity with under five minutes to go. Although they couldn’t capitalize, Abbotsford sealed the win when Phil Di Giuseppe launched a long-range empty-netter as Kokko headed to the bench. The 3-1 final gave the Canucks a 2-1 series lead.

The teams will face off again Friday night in Abbotsford, where the Canucks will have a chance to clinch a spot in the Pacific Division Final against the Colorado Eagles.

Abbotsford Canucks

The Abbotsford Canucks suited up for the second game in Round 2 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds in the Palm Desert.

Artūrs Šilovs was given the starting nod with Nikke Kokko in net for Coachella.

For the second straight game, the Firebirds were the first on the scoresheet as Gustav Olofsson scored with a hard shot from the point off the face-off. Four minutes later, the Firebirds doubled their lead, as rookie defenceman Ty Nelson scored his first goal of the playoffs.

The Canucks went on a power play with 7:31 to go in the period after a high-stick on Chase Wouters. In the dying seconds of the man-advantage, Wouters took a shot off the cross bar that looked as though it may have gone in the net. After the whistle, the shot was reviewed and it was called a no-goal. 

As the period came to a close, Max Lajoie took a shot from the face-off dot that had the puck trickling past Šilovs to give the home team a 3-0 lead to close out the first.

Looking to get back in the game, Nikita Tolopilo replaced Šilovs to start the second period. Only a few minuets into the frame, the Canucks started making moves, courtesy of Phil Di Giuseppe and Nate Smith scoring two goals 1:22 apart.

After Di Giuseppe picked up a bouncing puck in the slot, he skated over to the face-off dot and while spinning around, took a shot that made its way to the net and past Kokko. Akito Hirose and Aatu Räty were credited with the assists.

Moments later, as Jujhar Khaira was being pinned to the boards behind the net, he slid the puck over to Nate Smith, who’s wrap-around attempt was successful and earned him his first career playoff goal. 

Abbotsford continued its quest to equalize the game in the third period. About six minutes in, Sammy Blais made a cross-ice pass to Smith, who found Khaira in the slot. Khaira took a shot on a wide-open net that hit the back bar and came flying out. While all the Canucks on the ice celebrated, the referees were unsure if the puck had hit the cross bar or had gone in. The review confirmed that the puck did go in the net and Khaira officially tied the game at three a piece.  

With less than seven minutes remaining in the third, the Canucks broke the tie thanks to the trio of Blais, Smith, and Khaira. Down on the ice, Blais passed the puck to Smith behind the net, who found Khaira on the doorstep to score his second of the night. However, the Firebirds got the equalizer with 4:02 remaining in the period after a scramble in front of Tolopilo, sending the game to overtime.

The extra frame started with a blaze, as both teams had chances in the first minute. Five minutes in, as Tolopilo looked to play the puck, it was taken away by the Firebirds’ Melanson, who scored the winning goal to tie the series.

Abbotsford Canucks come back from a three-goal deficit, but fall to the Firebirds 5-4 in Overtime

The Abbotsford Canucks began Round 2 of the Calder Cup Playoffs in the Palm Desert for Game 1 against the Coachella Valley Firebirds. The series is a best-of-five, with the first team to three wins moving on to the next round.  

Artūrs Šilovs took the starting netminder role with Nikke Kokko in between the pipes on the other end of the ice. 

The intensity was high from the moment the puck dropped, but it was the Firebirds that took the first goal of the series, with Ryan Winterton getting on the board just 1:36 in.

With 10 minutes remaining in the frame, the Abbotsford Canucks struck back. Linus Karlsson had possession of the puck behind the net before passing it up to Jett Woo in front. With a slick forehand-backhand move, Woo put it past Kokko to make it a 1-1 game.

Only 1:05 later, the Canucks capitalized after the Firebirds’ goalie gave the puck away to Ty Mueller. The centreman took the puck in the corner and found Danila Klimovich in the slot, who made no mistake getting it into the back of the net.

Each team upped the pressure, looking to get on the scoresheet and adding to their shot-on-goal totals. However, it was the Canucks who converted a third time. With three minutes to go in the first, Abbotsford went on an odd-man-rush down the ice. Phil Di Giuseppe strode in on the wing, flipping the puck to Guillaume Brisebois, who tapped it past the goaltender to go up 3-1 and earn his first goal of the postseason. 

The second period was marked by an increase in defensive play and physicality. Eight minutes into the frame, Firebirds’ Jacob Melanson went crashing into Šilovs in the net, getting called for goaltender interference. The Abbotsford goalie remained in net and made several saves to keep his team in the lead. The physicality continued throughout the period, but neither team found the back of the net.

The strong play from Šilovs and the Abbotsford defence stretched into the third period, looking to shutdown the home team’s chances. With less than 14 minutes in the game on a Firebirds’ man-advantage, Coachella Valley’s Ben Meyers tried to jam the puck into the net. While it looked as though it may have gone in, Šilovs managed to keep it out at the last moment by sweeping the puck away with his glove. After a review to confirm, the no-goal call on the ice stood, keeping the two-goal lead for the Canucks. 

With under four minutes remaining in the game, Coachella Valley pulled Kokko, aiming to even the score. As the clock wound down, the Canucks held off their opponents, winning the game 3-1 with Šilovs making 29 saves.
