It was a big weekend for the Abbotsford Canucks, who picked up three of a possible four points against the Calgary Wranglers.

Nikita Tolopilo got the start between the pipes tonight following Jiří Patera’s outstanding performance the night before, squaring off against Connor Murphy at the other end. Up front, Joseph Labate slotted in at centre between Vilmer Alriksson and Dino Kambeitz, while Phip Waugh paired with Joe Arntsen on the blue line to round out the lineup changes.

Abbotsford came out strong, setting the tone early. Just under four minutes in, Jonathan Lekkerimäki weaved through the defence and buried a shot from the slot to give the Canucks a 1–0 lead. The visitors then faced some adversity, killing off multiple penalties as Tolopilo and the defensive core stood tall to keep the Wranglers off the board.

The intensity ramped up when Jett Woo dropped the gloves with Andrew Basha, firing up both benches and the crowd. Late in the frame, Rory Kerrins took a tripping penalty, and the Canucks capitalized. After a clear attempt by Calgary, Tolopilo moved the puck to Victor Mancini, who went coast to coast and scored just 18 seconds into the power play to make it 2–0. Calgary earned a man advantage of their own, but Abbotsford held firm, carrying the two-goal lead into the intermission.

While the second period saw no change on the scoreboard, it was packed with chaos. After Woo returned from his misconduct, Alex Gallant clipped him, resulting in a five-minute major. Moments later, Labate and Nick Cicek dropped the gloves, each earning fighting majors. Things escalated further when Alriksson and Parker Bell were also tossed for fighting during the scrum. Cicek was assessed an instigator and misconduct, giving Abbotsford a lengthy 5-on-3 opportunity, but the Wranglers managed to survive, sending the game to the third with the Canucks still up 2–0.

Calgary came out flying in the final frame. Daniil Miromanov got the Wranglers on the board just under two minutes in, and Clark Bishop tied it eight minutes later. Only 30 seconds after that, Kerrins struck again to give Calgary its first lead of the night at 3–2.

The Canucks refused to go quietly. With under four minutes remaining, Chase Wouters tipped home a feed from Lekkerimäki to force overtime for the second straight night.

In the extra frame, Calgary controlled much of the possession, though Nils Åman came close to ending it for Abbotsford with a dangerous chance. Ultimately, it was Cicek who sealed the game for the Wranglers with 45 seconds left in overtime.

The Canucks fell 4–3, but capped off a strong weekend effort—earning three of four points against a tough divisional opponent.

The Abbotsford Canucks took a quick flight to Calgary to take on the Calgary Wranglers at the Saddledome for the first time this season.

Jiří Patera got the start for Abbotsford in his 100th career AHL game, facing Owen Say at the other end. The Canucks also welcomed back Jett Woo, who returned to the lineup for his first game of the season after recovering from injury, adding a boost to the blue line.

The opening period was fairly even, with both teams generating similar quality chances. Calgary capitalized on a misplayed clearing attempt six minutes in, as Rory Kerrins ripped a shot from the slot to give the Wranglers a 1–0 lead. Abbotsford earned the lone power play of the frame, but Say stood tall. Despite finishing the period with a one-shot edge, the Canucks trailed 1–0 after 20 minutes.

The second period belonged to Abbotsford. The Canucks limited the Wranglers to just one shot in the first half of the frame while firing 10 of their own. Say continued to stiff Abbotsford, but the pressure eventually paid off. Just past the midway point, Arnaud Durandeau found Nick Poisson in the slot, where he buried the puck—snapping his stick in the process—to tie the game. Moments later, Chase Wouters dropped the gloves with Alex Gallant, injecting even more energy into the Canucks bench.

Around the 16-minute mark, Mackenzie MacEachern struck from the slot, with the puck slowly trickling over the goal line to give Abbotsford its first lead of the night. Strong defensive play and timely saves from Patera sealed a dominant middle frame, as the Canucks carried a 2–1 advantage into the third.

The lead didn’t last long. Five minutes into the final period, Étienne Morin fired a long shot that found its way through traffic and into the net for his first AHL goal, tying the game at two. Abbotsford continued to push, but Say remained locked in, sending the contest to overtime.

With another game requiring extra minutes, the Canucks wasted no time. Just 1:06 into overtime, Jonathan Lekkerimäki snapped a shot into the top corner to seal a 3–2 victory for Abbotsford. The Canucks picked up a much-needed win but will rematch the Wranglers tomorrow afternoon at the Saddledome.

The Abbotsford Canucks took on the Coachella Valley Firebirds on their 5th Anniversary Night.

Aku Koskenvuo got the start between the pipes for Abbotsford this afternoon, facing Victor Ostman at the other end. The Canucks shook up their lines a bit, with Josh Bloom and Anri Ravinskis drawing into the forward group, and Phip Waugh slotted alongside Joe Arntsen on the blue line.

Looking for a stronger showing on the shot clock, the Canucks controlled much of the early play. Their momentum dipped briefly after needing to kill off an early penalty, but they came out unscathed and picked things right back up. Late in the first, Joe Arntsen and John Hayden dropped the gloves to spark their benches, but the score remained 0–0 after twenty minutes.

The second period saw more action, and it was Abbotsford who broke the ice. Just three minutes in, Nils Åman fired a shot from the left circle, and Ben Berard managed to get a piece of it to give the Canucks a 1–0 lead. A few minutes later, though, Abbotsford ran into trouble on the power play when J.R. Avon buried a shorthanded chance to tie the game at 1–1. The Canucks had to fight off two more penalties as the period went on, but things stayed even heading into the third.

Both teams pushed for the go-ahead goal in the final frame. With no penalties called, it stayed even strength throughout, and both goaltenders turned aside quality chances at both ends. With four minutes remaining, the Firebirds finally broke through when Ben Meyers snapped a shot from the slot to take a 2–1 lead. Abbotsford pulled the goalie with two minutes left, and a last-second Firebirds penalty provided a glimmer of hope, but the Canucks couldn’t convert before the buzzer.

The Abbotsford Canucks carried the momentum from last night’s victory into their final home game before the Christmas break, taking on the Tucson Roadrunners once again at Rogers Forum.

Abbotsford rolled out an identical 12-man forward group, with Nikolai Kynzhov slotting into the defensive core alongside Joe Arntsen. Jiří Patera got the start in goal for the Canucks, while Jaxson Stauber manned the crease for Tucson.

The opening period was a slow one, with Abbotsford and Tucson registering just eight and six shots respectively. Both teams had looks on the man advantage, but neither side could find the back of the net, sending the game scoreless into the second period.

The middle frame brought the energy. Just over five minutes in, Chase Wouters opened the scoring, backhanding Arntsen’s rebound past Stauber to give Abbotsford a 1–0 lead. It marked the captain’s third goal in as many games.

Only 1:02 later, Sawyer Mynio fired a shot from the blue line that took a fortunate bounce, popping up and over Stauber before dropping in behind him to extend the lead to 2–0.

Just five seconds after the goal, Dino Kambeitz and Dmitri Simashev dropped the gloves, earning five minutes each. The physicality continued late in the period when Jujhar Khaira and Kevin Connauton squared off as well. After two goals and two fights, the Canucks carried a 2–0 lead into the third.

Tucson pushed back early in the final frame. Following a penalty to Arntsen, the Roadrunners capitalized on the power play, with Ben McCartney cutting the deficit to one. Tucson continued to apply pressure, but Abbotsford held strong defensively.

With time winding down, Tucson pulled their goaltender for an extra attacker and then earned a late penalty, setting up a 6-on-4 advantage. The Canucks weathered the storm with some key defensive plays and timely saves, closing out a hard-fought 2–1 regulation win.

Abbotsford will now head into the Christmas break before returning to action on the road against the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

The Abbotsford Canucks returned home to close out the 2025 calendar year with a pair of games against the Tucson Roadrunners, kicking things off with their festive Grinchmas matchup — and the night went exactly according to plan.

Nikita Tolopilo got the start between the pipes for Abbotsford, opposite Matthew Villalta for Tucson. The Canucks welcomed several reinforcements into the lineup, with Arshdeep Bains rejoining the left side of Nils Åman and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Future German Olympian Lukas Reichel made his Abbotsford debut, centering Ben Berard and Mackenzie MacEachern, while Ty Mueller returned after missing time with injury. On the blue line, Jett Woo made his home-ice debut alongside Jimmy Schuldt.

Abbotsford wasted no time getting on the board. Just three minutes in, Chase Wouters walked into the zone all alone, pulled a quick move out front, and tucked the puck home to give the Canucks a 1–0 lead. The home side generated a few more quality looks, but Tucson found the equalizer when Austin Poganski finished off a drop pass from Sammy Walker at the top of the crease. Midway through the period, Jett Woo dropped the gloves with Ben McCartney, firing up the Grinchmas crowd. Despite a flurry of chances at both ends, Tolopilo was the difference early, turning aside 18 shots to keep the game tied 1–1 after one.

The second period saw Abbotsford push for momentum, but it was Tucson who struck first. Dmitri Simashev snapped a shot from the right circle to give the Roadrunners the lead midway through the frame. Nils Åman later earned back-to-back breakaway chances, each resulting in a power play for the Canucks. On the second opportunity, Kirill Kudryavtsev unloaded a blast from the blue line, and Mackenzie MacEachern was perfectly positioned to deflect it home, tying the game 2–2 heading into the final period.

The third belonged to Abbotsford. Just four minutes in, Jonathan Lekkerimäki hammered a one-timer from the right circle to put the Canucks ahead 3–2. A few minutes later, Arshdeep Bains capped off his return with his first goal back in a Canucks uniform, extending the lead to two. From there, Abbotsford locked things down defensively, and Tolopilo remained rock solid, closing out a 4–2 regulation win.

The two teams will rematch tomorrow night in Abbotsford’s final home game of 2025.
