**Abbotsford, B.C.** – The Abbotsford Canucks are excited to bring together everyone from the Lower Mainland and the Fraser Valley to the Abbotsford Centre to celebrate Family Day on Monday, February 17, presented by FortisBC, when the team hosts the Colorado Eagles! This will be a battle of two of the top teams in the Pacific Division, only separated by eight points, and featuring some of the best players in the American Hockey League, including Jonathan Lekkerimäki, Aatu Räty, and Colorado’s Matthew Phillips! 

Monday’s game will have early doors, starting at 12:30pm, and a 2:00pm puck drop, so be sure to arrive early at the Abbotsford Centre to celebrate and enjoy time with your family, and help push the Canucks past their division rivals by showcasing what it means to be “Proudly Abbotsford”.

The Abbotsford Canucks had a quick turnaround, as they rematched the San Diego Gulls following a 3-2 win last night.  

Nikita Tolopilo started in net for the Canucks tonight, taking on Oscar Dansk, who played for San Diego last night as well.

Happy with last night’s structure, the Canucks went with an identical offensive lineup. Nils Åman continued to line up next to Max Sasson and Linus Karlsson, and the trio of Arshdeep Bains, Aatu Räty, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki stayed together. Sammy Blais and Phil Di Giuseppe bookended Ty Mueller, and Tristen Nielsen, John Stevens, and Chase Wouters were locked in to round out the offense. 

On defense, Kirill Kudryavtsev played alongside new teammate Victor Mancini, and Christian Wolanin and Jett Woo stayed together. Joe Arntsen slotted into the lineup for his first career AHL game tonight, alongside Cole McWard who played his 100th career AHL game, and the lineup for the night was complete. 

The first period started like last night, with both teams applying pressure but no one seeing results. It was almost halfway through when the Canucks took the first penalty of the game, but they were able to kill it off before returning to 5 on 5 hockey. It was only a few minutes later, that the Canucks took another penalty, but this time they weren’t as lucky. Jett Woo was in the box for all of 9 seconds, before Sasha Pastujov scored on the powerplay for the Gulls to give them a 1-0 lead. Just like last night, it didn’t take long for the Canucks to respond because just a minute and a half later, Jonathan Lekkerimaki shot a laser to the back to the Gulls night, and the game was tied. No one else could find the slot before the end of the period, and the teams were tied at 1 after 20 minutes of play. 

The second period got off to a quick start, with the Gulls getting on the board just a minute and 56 seconds in. Sasha Pastujov netted his second of the game through the legs of Tolopilo to pull ahead, 2-1. Although scoring off the hop, that was the lone goal of the period. Neither team was able to get on the board again, despite the Canucks first powerplay opportunity. The goaltenders were sound, and the Gulls were up by 1, heading into the final frame.

There were 20 minutes on the board to try and catch up in the game. The goalies were locked in, continuing to shut the door on opportunities. However, after an unlucky turnover in Gulls zone, the Gulls headed down the stretch and Judd Caufield was able to extend their lead to 2, 14 minutes into the period. With just under 5 minutes left in the game, the Canucks pulled their goaltender to try and make up some goals. They registered some grade-A chances during the time, but after a faceoff in the offensive zone was intercepted by the Gulls, a long shot from Nathan Gaucher made its way into the empty net, and the Gulls were up 4-1 with 3 and a half minutes left in the game. Unfortunately, the Canucks could not get it done in time, and they fell to Gulls to split the series. 

The Canucks will take a few days to regroup before facing the Eagles once again this weekend for Country Night and their Family Day game.

The Abbotsford Canucks are back at home after the All-Star break and debuted their green jerseys as they took on the San Diego Gulls. 

Artūrs Šilovs started in net for the Canucks tonight, for his 100th game as an Abbotsford Canuck. He took on Calle Clang at the other end. 

With the NHL on their 4 Nations break, the Abbotsford Canucks got a big boost to their lineup, with a bunch of familiar faces returning to the club. Nils Åman lined up next to Max Sasson and Linus Karlsson, and the trio of Arshdeep Bains, Aatu Räty, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki followed suit. Sammi Blais and Phil Di Giuseppe bookended Ty Mueller, and Tristen Nielsen, John Stevens, and Chase Wouters rounded out the offense. 

On defense, Victor Mancini made his Abbotsford debut on home ice, next to Elias Pettersson, who returned to the club for the 4 Nations break. Christian Wolanin and Jett Woo paired up, and Kirill Kudryavtsev lined up next to Cole McWard to solidify a depth-filled lineup.

The first period remained scoreless despite close chances and a few man advantages to each team. Oscar Dansk took over in net for the Gulls after Calle Clang left the game with an injury around 7 minutes in. Despite the change, the netminders stayed sound, keeping it a scoreless game into the second period. 

The next 20 minutes was a completely different game. The scoring floodgates opened and the teams found their stride. It started when Sam Colangelo found the loose puck that snuck past Šilovs and tucked it home just 54 seconds to give the Gulls a lead. It didn’t take long for the Canucks to respond, when just a few minutes later, Linus Karlsson started down the ice, wrapped around the net, and tucked it home to tie up the game. The goaltenders stood tall for the next 10 minutes, but it was Sam Colangelo who grabbed his second of the game with a sharp-angle shot that made its way to the back of the Canucks net. The Gulls had a 2-1 lead, but Abbotsford responded quickly once again. A minute later, Arshdeep Bains and Aatu Räty found themselves on a rush down the ice, where Bains set up Räty for the perfect wide-open back door shot. Aatu Räty cashed in on the open net and the game was squared up a 2 with 5 minutes left in the period. A late penalty was called on the Canucks, and they closed out the period on the man advantage. Despite a bunch of goals, they were in the same position as they were at the end of the last period, all tied up.  

The teams had 20 minutes to get to get on the board and avoid overtime. The goaltenders were sharp, not allowing anything to get by. 10 minutes had passed, and the game was still tied, but after an initial shot by Max Sasson bounced back, Linus Karlsson swooped in and put the rebounded puck back in the net. The Canucks had their first lead of the game and were determined to hold on to it until the end. With time ticking, a late penalty to the Gulls didn’t help their comeback case, but after successfully killing it off, they pulled their netminder with less than a minute remaining. The Canucks prevailed and didn’t allow the Gulls to take advantage, and as the time expired, the Canucks defeated San Diego 3-2. 

They will rematch tomorrow, before getting ready to take on the Colorado Eagles once again this weekend for Country Night and their Family Day game.

The Canucks defeat the San Diego Gulls 3-2 in tough battle

The Abbotsford Canucks kickstarted their road trip with a one-game standoff against the San Diego Gulls. 

Ty Young got the start in net tonight following his recall to the team, and he faced off against Oscar Dansk for the Gulls. 

The Canucks lineup was vastly different from their last few games, following a series of transactions between the Vancouver Canucks and their ECHL affiliate Kalamazoo Wings. Nate Smith rejoined the team following an injury and lined up next to Sammy Blais and Max Sasson to get things going. Tristen Nielsen and Danila Klimovich bookended Ty Mueller, and Chase Wouters centered Carsen Twarynski and Dino Kambeitz. Josh Bloom and Ben Berard slotted into the lineup on either side of Cooper Walker following their recent call-up to the team, and the offense for the night was complete. 

There was not as much change to the blue line, as Christian Wolanin and Jett Woo stuck together, as well as Kirill Kudryavtsev and Victor Mancini. Joe Arntsen and Cole McWard joined forces to solidify the Canucks lineup for the night. 

Despite missing some key pieces in the lineup tonight, Abbotsford came out strong, taking possession of the puck for the majority of the period. Oscar Dansk made some great saves, keeping the Gulls in the game, but the Canucks continued to outshoot them. Around 14 minutes in, Coulson Pitre got the Gulls on the board when he tucked home the pass from captain Ryan Carpenter giving them the lead. Penalties were exchanged before the end of the period, but the Canucks couldn’t tie it up before the 20 minutes was up. 

The next period had to be a big one if the Canucks wanted to get back into the game. The Gulls didn’t ease up, coming out stronger than they had in the first period. The Canucks continued to apply pressure, registering multiple shots on net, but Oscar Dansk had plans of his own. It took another 14 minutes in the period before anyone saw results, but this time it was in favour of the Canucks. Sammy Blais ripped a shot from the left circle, that made its way to the back of the Gulls net, and the game was tied up at 1. Shortly after that, Ty Young made the save of the game, robbing Tristen Luneau from grabbing the lead, and the teams were tied into the final frame. 

A change of pace from the first 40 minutes, the final period exploded with goals. The Canucks started down a man, but they were successfully able to kill it off. Unfortunately, just 25 after returning to even strength, Coulson Pitre secured his second of the game, giving San Diego the lead once again. It didn’t take long for that to be extended, because just a minute and a half later, Sam Colangelo extended their lead to 2 when the puck squeaked through the legs of Ty Young. Although down, the Canucks were not out, because just a few minutes later, Ben Berard made his presence known when he fired a shot from the edge of the left circle to bring the Canucks back within one. Four minutes later, Dino Kambeitz battled through bodies, ripping the puck top shelf to even up the game at 3 with less than 10 minutes left. Both teams were back in the same position, battling to avoid overtime, but it was the Gulls who would strike next when Tristan Luneau got his revenge, pulling the Gulls ahead once again, with 6 minutes remaining. Not giving up, the Canucks pulled their netminder with less than 2 minutes to go, with the hope of tying up the game, but after a few shots on net, the Gulls got a hold of the puck and Nikita Nesterenko secured the empty net goal. Despite their best efforts, the Canucks fell 5-3 to the San Diego Gulls in a hard-fought battle. 

The team will travel to Tucson over the coming days to take on the Tucson Roadrunners before heading north to see the Calgary Wranglers.

The Abbotsford Canucks returned to a full crowd for a Family Day matinee against the Colorado Eagles, looking to sweep the series, fresh off a 4-1 win on Saturday.  

Artūrs Šilovs got back-to-back starts against the Eagles, this time taking on Trent Miner at the other end.  

The Canucks changed up the lines tonight, starting with Max Sasson centering Arshdeep Bains and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. Tristen Nielsen joined Sammy Blais and Nils Åman, and Chase Wouters slotted in between Ty Mueller and Danila Klimovich. Carsen Twarynski, Cooper Walker, and Dino Kambeitz re-entered the lineup tonight, closing out the offensive group. 

On defense, Kirill Kudryavtsev joined Victor Mancini, and Christian Wolanin and Jett Woo remained a duo. Joe Arntsen slotted back in next to Cole McWard and the Canucks lineup was complete.

The teams came out hot, both leveling up their games from Saturday night. There were hits, checks, and breakaways but the goalies stood tall, and the defense defended. Halfway through the period, the Canucks finally saw success when Danila Klimovich passed the puck from behind the net to Ty Mueller who was parked in front. Mueller one-timed the puck right to the back of the Eagles net to give the Canucks a 1-0 lead. Colorado tried to respond but couldn’t get anything past Šilovs for the first 20 minutes, and Abbotsford led into the second period. 

The second period continued to be a battle, with teams doubling their shots on net. After playing the last 20 minutes at even strength, Mancini dropped the gloves with Jedlicka, and as another Eagle joined in on the fight, Abbotsford found themselves on the first powerplay of the game. After about a minute into it, Danila Klimovich found himself picking up speed on the left side and backhanding the puck into the top corner of Colorado’s net. This goal pulled Abbotsford ahead, 2-0. Despite Colorado eventually getting themselves a powerplay, it only lasted 15 seconds before they played 4 on 4 hockey. No one else was able to get on the board before the buzzer sounded on the middle frame. 

With 20 minutes to play, the Canucks looked to close out the weekend series with a sweep. The Eagles applied pressure, desperate to get on the board and at least force an overtime. The game continued to get chippy, but as time passed, the score remained the same. With 15 minutes gone, the Eagles finally found success when T.J. Tynan was able to get one past Šilovs and bring them within one. Time was expiring, and Colorado pulled their netminder to try and take advantage of an extra man on the ice, but they couldn’t seal the deal before the end of the period. Abbotsford sept their weekend series, 2-1, to secure their 12th win in 16 games. 

The team will head down south to take on the San Diego Gulls in a midweek matchup before getting back to Tucson to take on the Roadrunners.

The Abbotsford Canucks took on the Colorado Eagles for their third game together in less than a week and looked to use the home ice to their advantage, pulling them ahead in the series.

Artūrs Šilovs started in net following his overtime victory against Colorado last week, and he took on Kevin Mandolese of the Eagles at the other end. 

The Canucks switched things up tonight, with Arshdeep Bains, Aaty Räty, and Jonathan Lekkerimäki kicking things off. Sammy Blais, Nils Åman, and Linus Karlsson followed suit, with Ty Mueller centering Max Sasson and Danila Klimovich. Tristen Nielsen and Chase Wouters continued to bookend John Stevens, and the Canucks offense was complete.

On defense, Elias Pettersson lined up next to Victor Mancini, and Christian Wolanin stuck with Jett Woo. Kirill Kudryavtsev moved back beside Cole McWard to round out the Canucks lineup for the night. 

Abbotsford looked to set the tone quickly, but the teams played some good back-and-forth hockey. The Eagles had the first penalty, but the Canucks were unable to cash in on the advantage. It took till about 7 minutes into the game, back at even strength, where Artūrs Šilovs set up the play to Victor Mancini. Mancini stretch passed down the ice to Jonathan Lekkerimäki on a breakaway, who split the D and stickhandled the puck to the back of Colorado’s net. The Canucks had a 1-0 lead before the halfway mark in the first period but headed to their own penalty kill shortly thereafter. The Eagles had no luck with their man advantage, and once the game was back to 5 on 5, the Canucks set themselves up once again. Christian Wolanin sent a seeing-eye shot in front of the net, where Linus Karlsson was there to tip it in. The Canucks had a 2-0 lead 14 minutes into the game. The period wouldn’t end without some adversity, and the Canucks found themselves killing off a 5-on-3. With some great clears and time expiring on the period, Abbotsford was up 2-0 heading into the second period. 

The Canucks got through the remaining seconds of the Eagles' powerplay and the even-strength period began. Four minutes into the game, positions changed, and the Canucks found themselves on the other end of a two-man advantage. They had some really close calls, but Mandolese and the Eagles' defense stayed strong. It wasn’t until there was 1 second left before an Eagle could come out of the box that Aatu Räty took a sharp angle shot that deflected off a Colorado defender and bounced into the net, and the Canucks took a 3-0 lead, 6 minutes in. Despite some great chances from each end, this was the lone goal of the period. Artūrs Šilovs remained a brick wall for the duration of the period, and the Canucks had a 3-goal cushion with 20 minutes left to play. 

There was one period standing between the win for Abbotsford, and they were determined to make it happen. With tensions rising, many guys found themselves in the box, but the goaltenders were making it very difficult for anything to get through despite the advantages. With a few minutes remaining in the game, Colorado pulled their goaltender to try and get on the board. They burned about a minute of it, but with just over 50 seconds in the game, Jere Innala ripped a sharp-angle shot, getting the Eagles on the board and ensuring they would not get shut out. After resetting, Mandolese left the net, but this time, Abbotsford got possession of the puck, and Aatu Räty dumped it in the empty net with 8 seconds to go. Abbotsford defeated the Colorado Eagles 4-1 and took the edge on their season series.  

The teams will take a day to reset before going head-to-head again on Monday for our family day game! Then Abbotsford will head south to San Diego to play one game against the Gulls before their weekend series in Tucson against the Roadrunners.
